So much for the 90 day trial period that I was all for.
I’ve been on one for the last 3 months and was told yesterday if I want to keep my job I need to go on commission only.
Spoke with a lawyer and they told me that there is nothing I can do, it’s their biggest problem as if a company is restructuring it’s finances it’s an easy way out.
SUCKS!!!

I’m in Auckland, have done sales all my life and not to bad at it either. However, this time of year it’s not easy bringing on new business customers so it was a bit of an out for them even though a huge stretch.
Christmas time, what am I supposed to do?!?!?! Just looking looking looking!
And would be more than happy to get out of sales.

Only took 4,500,000,000 years for ‘intelligent’ life to evolve on this planet after all. Mind you, once technology is up and running, I suppose it would be interesting to find out whether it wipes itself out, or whether it colonizes the rest of space….. I guess the answer to that question is self evident.

Or maybe we are alone… Or maybe, once a civilization reaches a certain point ethically, it no longer interferes with and fucks up other civilizations/ecosystems. Who knows?

The ANT AND THE GRASSHOPPER This one is a little different ……….Two Different Versions……… And there are Different Morals.

OLD VERSION:

The ant works hard in the withering heat all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the ant is warm and well fed.

The grasshopper has no food or shelter, so he dies out in the cold.

MORAL OF THE OLD STORY:

Be responsible for yourself!
MODERN VERSION:
The ant works hard in the withering heat and the rain all summer long, building his house and laying up supplies for the winter.

The grasshopper thinks the ant is a fool and laughs and dances and plays the summer away.

Come winter, the shivering grasshopper calls a press conference and demands to know why the ant should be allowed to be warm and well fed while he is cold and starving.

TV1,2 & 3 News, and Campbell Live show up to provide pictures of the shivering grasshopper next to a video of the ant in his comfortable home with a table filled with food. The country is stunned by the sharp contrast.

How can this be, that in a country of such wealth, this poor grasshopper is allowed to suffer so?

Sue Bradford appears on Campbell Live with the grasshopper and everybody cries. The Green Party stages a demonstration in front of the ant’s house where the news stations film the group singing, ‘We shall overcome.’

Green Party Leader Metiriea Turei condemns the ant and blames John Key , Rob Muldoon , Roger Douglas , Capitalism and Global warming for the grasshopper’s plight.

John Minto exclaims in an interview with TV News that the ant has gotten rich off the back of the grasshopper, and both call for an immediate tax hike on the ant to make him pay his fair share.

Finally to gain votes to win an election , the Government drafts the Economic Equity & Anti-Grasshopper Act retroactive to the beginning of the summer.

The ant is fined for failing to consider how his hard work and preparation has affected the Grasshoppers Mana and, having nothing left to pay his retroactive taxes, his home is confiscated under the Government Land Repo Act and given to the grasshopper.

The story ends as we see the grasshopper and his free-loading friends finishing up the last bits of the ant’s food while the government confiscated house he is in, which, as you recall, just happens to be the ant’s old house, crumbles around them because the grasshopper doesn’t maintain it.

The ant has disappeared to Australia, never to be seen again.

The grasshopper is found dead in a Drugs related incident, and the house, now abandoned, is taken over by a gang of homebody spiders who terrorize the once prosperous and peaceful, neighbourhood.

MORAL OF THE STORY:

Be careful how you vote in 2011

I’ve sent this to you because I believe that you are an ant!

You may wish to pass this on to other ants, but don’t bother sending it on to any grasshoppers because they wouldn’t understand it, anyway

“If you’re so generous, why don’t you feed this grasshopper?”

“I will,” Lefty replied. Then, turning to the grasshopper, he said: “Follow me. I will take you to the government’s shelter, where there will be food and a dry place to sleep.”
George gasped. “You’re working for the government now?”
“I’m in public service,” Lefty said loftily. “I want to ‘make a difference’ in this world.”
“You really have been to college,” George said. “But if you’re such a friend of the grasshopper, why don’t you teach him how to work during the summer and save something for the winter?”

“We have no right to change his lifestyle and try to make him like us. That would be cultural imperialism.”
George was too stunned to answer.
Lefty not only won the argument, he continued to expand his program of shelters for grasshoppers. As word spread, grasshoppers came from miles around. Eventually, some of the younger ants decided to adopt the grasshopper lifestyle.
As the older generation of ants passed from the scene, more and more ants joined the grasshoppers, romping and playing in the fields. Finally, all the ants and all the grasshoppers spent all their time enjoying the carefree lifestyle and lived happily ever after—all summer long. Then the winter came.

A word on election ‘mandates’ –

There has been a lot of talk about whether National has a mandate to partially sell some state assets; much of the talk from the ideological left has been predictable (if it is not in Das Capital there is no mandate for it) and some who should no better have been jumping on the bandwagon.

All this has meant the NZ public is starting to think there is no mandate for a policy which involves little more than retail investors buying a few hundred shares in a dam and collecting dividends indefinately.

In New Zealand, under our system of government, we have a General Election and due to a proportional voting system the passage of legislation invariably happens due to horse trading or compromise; this is not something I happen to agree with (and proudly voted to abandon MMP and reintroduce FPP at the recent election) but these have been facts of life for 15 years and so be it.

Due to the nature of the NZ Parliament and how it works in day to day practice it means that political parties can enter an election campaign with bland slogans and generalisations rather than detailed policy; ie: if compromise will be occuring between elections you do not want to get tied down to specifics and get accused of broken promises like Labour in the 80s and National in the early 90s.

An example of how this is unusual would be Great Britain.
At election time in Britain each party produces an election manifesto which covers all manner of imaginable policies, usually in astonishing detail, and this can be puzzling to anyone living in NZ who observes this activity.

The reason is simple – the House of Lords

Under an agreement from the 1940s the Lords have agreed that if something is contained in an election manifesto and the party wins the election it is deemed to have a ‘mandate’ and the Lords will pass it even if large numbers of peers strongly disagree (House of Lords members tend to abstain rather than vote against legislation they disagree with out of respect for the undertaking made in the 40s)

The point I am making is that in Britain things are a bit more out in the open and no one ever suggests there is no mandate for a policy.
In New Zealand the same thing is true – asset sales have a mandate – due to the nature of day to day workings and compromises and horse trading within the NZ Parliament.

Those saying National has no mandate are simply mischief making and are ideologically opposed to anything not being own by the state and would scream hysterically about privatisation if an SOE was losing $3 billion per year and the Government (understandably) wanted to sell it.

Based on what you DID sell in say, the last two months, if the commission rate was applied
to those sales would you have earned more or less than you were being paid as a wage ?

You say that you have been in sales all your life and not bad at it.
Have you always been paid a salary or wage?

Why did you leave your last sales job ?

One thing you need to do right now though is change your attitude.
“Christmas time and what am I supposed to do.” ‘Poor me’ is not going to cut it mate.

Instead of, “looking, looking. looking.” why not apply yourself now to the job at hand.
Give it everything you have.
Remember, in selling. You wont get what you want, you wont get what you need, you will
get what you expect to get.
Change your attitude and decide that you will succeed , thats step one.

Although I’m not totally AOK with the asset sales I agree that the recent election gave the government a mandate for that action although I suspect that National were returned despite the policy rather than because of it. The proposal being made well in advance gave ample time for consideration & debate.

MMP is a dog but it survives largely because people can remember the excesses of FPP. Anyone who wants to apportion blame for the system we now have need look no further than Bolger’s blatant lies over the National Super surcharge coupled with the undemocratic concentration of power in the executive.

Yes I am all for it when used properly, these guys have used it in a way to re-structure their finances. Being fractually off my target last month only was enough for them. And as far as working hard, I always work hard.

Thanks. Yes quite a shock and one very moodie wife just now.
If I was on commission for the last 3 months I would have doubled my income, however it’s the security of a salary that I prefer.
I have done both commission and salary positions over the last many years and left my last job because of a disagreement with management. Simply, I have always serviced and looked after my own clients, they wanted me to concentrate on new sales only, so sign them and drop them, I don’t work like that.

And as far as your looking looking etc comment goes, yes you are totally right however as of next Monday I change to commission and I get to see my first cheque at the end of January and my next, end of Feb. So I a real shitty period to get through.

I sympathise with your position – it’s quite likely that some employers are abusing the 90 day provision but I can say that as an ex business owner that I frequently did not employ people precisely because I could not reasonably remove poor employees without substantial cost. I am not talking about someone who could improve with the proper assistance – I refer to employees who give their colleagues a bad name – they are plain bad at their job. I ended up in the mode of employing people when I pretty much had no choice. The ability to have a period to actually prove that the employees were up to their CVs would have meant I would have taken a lot more chances on employment. What many people forget is that for smaller companies is that the money going to the bad employee come directly out of the pocket of the business owner – many of whom earn a lot less than the left would have one believe.

Overall, I earned good money for my risk and effort but spent extensive periods of no income while I paid my employees and not myself. Occasionally, I had to take loans so it was not plain sailing. My wife and I agreed that I would not tell her the state of the business as she could not cope with the unpredictability.

My point is that an employer is taking on a commitment and that is not a simple thing. My judgement would be that the majority of use of the 90 day provision is for what it is intended and that while there will be abuses it should do more good than harm.

Michaels consider this.

Given that you were fractionaly off your target last month and that if you had been on the commission rate
then you would have doubled your income then your employer is prepared to double what he has been
paying you for your services to accomodate you into the new business structure.

In Sales in general commission jobs have much higher incomes than salaried ones.

Put the security blanket of a salary aside for a while, back yourself, give it your best shot and you will
never look back.
This could be the best thing that could have happened (remember the old story. In Chinese, the symbol
for the word ‘crisis’ is the same as the one for the word ‘opportunity’)
Explain this to your wife, i bet she will back you and cheer up when she understands.

Pity we dont have something similar here – if all parties put out detailed manifestos like that it would be far easier to compare policies side by side. In the past I have drawn up a matrix of the policy areas of most interest and been able to assess from that which party most closely aligns with what I want

Shouldn’t Bollard be lowering our interest rates?

The world is heading towards some bad times, and Aussie just lowered theirs.

Bollard always seems to be one cycle behind in his interest rate movements. ie, he always acts after the event.

eg, during the housing boom, he refused to increase interest rates to dampen house price increases, and look what happened there.

Now, he will not lower them, in the face of a global slowdown. Lets face it, NZ’s fortunes are based on external factors after all.

I reckon Bollard has been absolutely hopeless .

Meanwhile, I see that Lucia Maria has written about the dangers of pornography. She even has quotes from a pseudo expert, Judith Reisman, warning us about the homoerotic nature of porn. Apparently,

As an example, consider Reisman’s report on the supposed effects of Pornography on the brain. Besides being badly written, it tells us that the reason people watch pornography is because of the fear and anxiety it produces!!!!

Reisman’s main claim to fame apparently is she once did a study for the US dept of Justice looking at the cartoons in Playboy, Hustler etc, and showing how many of them were about promoting pedophilia. She gives examples of some of these cartoons in the report. Some of the cartoons are certainly questionable but some are clearly not.

The cartoon on p30 of the young girl in bed with the “nice man from the Moral Majority” is clearly not about promoting pedophilia – its point has completely eluded her. The cartoons on the next page about santa fucking reindeer, or his elves, or shooting kids are not about promoting pedophilia, or child violence. Reisman clearly has some basic comprehension issues.

So much oil is now flowing from the company’s Cheal-B5 discovery well at Ngaere that the drilling project’s US$2 million capital cost will be paid off in just 14 days.

The room was full of pregnant women with their partners. The class was in
full swing. The instructor was teaching the women how to breathe and was
telling the men how to give the necessary assurance to their partners at
this stage of the pregnancy.

She said “Ladies, remember that exercise is good for you. Walking is
especially beneficial. It strengthens the pelvic muscles and will make
delivery that much easier.” Just take several stops and stay on a soft
surface like grass or a path.

She looked at the men in the room, “and Gentlemen, remember — You’re in
this together — It wouldn’t hurt you to go walking with her.

The room suddenly got very quiet as the men absorbed this information.

Then a man at the back of the room slowly raised his hand.

“Yes, answered the Instructor.

“I was just wondering if it would be all right if she carries a golf bag
while we walk??

chiz, actually, Playboy sued Riesman and LOST. In Holland of all places!

She did a study of the images in Playboy that included children with adults, and accused them of doing child pornography – Playboy took offence, sued her and LOST.

Chinese cash flows to Nats

Chinese New Zealand businesses, including one formerly owned by the businessman spearheading Shanghai Pengxin’s bid for the Crafar dairy farms, have boosted the National Party’s coffers by more than $100,000 in recent days.

Recent filings to the Electoral Commission show National received $50,000 on November 22 from Citi Financial Group, a Queen St foreign exchange and financial planning firm owned by Yan Yang and Qiang Wei.

The same day, the party got a $1600 donation from Oravida NZ, which also gave $55,000 on November 30.

Oravida’s directors are Jing Huang, Julia Jiyan Xu and wealthy but reclusive businessman Deyi Shi.

In September last year when it was called Kiwi Dairy, Oravida was bought from Terry Lee, a businessman associated with Shanghai Pengxin, which has applied for Overseas Investment Office approval to buy the Crafar farms.

Mr Lee is one of two directors of Milk New Zealand, set up by Shanghai Pengxin as the vehicle for its Crafar bid. The other director is Shanghai Pengxin Group chairman Jiang Zhaobai.

The recent donations mean National has topped Act in attracting big sums from supporters this year. Act has had $312,855 in donations over the $30,000 threshold above which they must be reported to the Electoral Commission.

National’s big donations total $404,933 while Labour got just one – $50,000 from the Todd Corporation in September.
