There is nothing like what a good riesling will do for rational thought.
The missus and I had one with our whole baked snapper this evening then over coffee afterwards agreed that the possibility exists that Goldsmith’s victory in Epsom would be the best result for the Act party.
Why?
We get rid of the old farts like Rodney Hide, John Banks, Don Brash, Heather Roy et al, and move on towards 2014 or earlier if a snap election is called for.
I had been discussing with her the wonderful young people in Act, the likes of Whittingham, David Seymour and the current president whose name eludes me. Her indoors was unamused by my comment that the young women at the Act launch last Sunday were so much more attractive than the molls one would see at a Greens or Labour party carry-on. But there is a sense of vibrancy there that could come to life with the departure of the superannuitants. I have a lot of faith in the young people attracted to the Act party; young people who want to enjoy life and let others enjoy life as well, rather than drafting a plethora of laws to restrict them. The young people I have seen in the Act party enjoy having fun. The young people in Labour and the Greens hate seeing other people have fun. They would want to pass laws to prohibit having fun.

The game changer is Bill English squirming when asked if National had a contingency plan in case they could not grow export earnings and therefore would not be able to cover the debt. Only squirming! No contingency. But National party supporters are like those silly American girls interviewed on tv one tonight… Ohh, i’d vote for shonkey he’s wearing a nice tie. Brain dead cretins who fail to consider that the foreign investors National are trying to attract ponder any proposal we make while keeping their greedy eyes on the better prospects that may be offered in the sweat shops of Asia. To which National bow low and reduce the minimum wage. Now there’s a country to be proud of!

@ ste3e when did National lower the minimum wage and import sweatshop jobs from asian factories??? Is this is in your special little world where new zealand doesn’t need partnerships with dirty foreigners??

As you’ve been a good boy and eaten your sprouts, here’s a recent (2009) table for you show where US foreign direct investment goes.

You’ll see it overwhelming goes to other rich (i.e. high wage) countries – the EU and Canada. The amounts invested in the sweat shops of Asia’ is an absolutely piffling amount in comparison.

It’s all about productivity, Ste3e, not wage levels.

I am glad to see Bill English no longer needs squirm. You have all so coherently answered the important question about National’s contingency plan. Oh no, that’s right you didn’t; just more National party throwing sand about to disguise the rot. As for American investment as linked above (thank you Wat) that makes me worry further. Obviously National have tax and labour settings adjusted to meet the demands of foreign investors, that our settings are so much lower than those countries America invests heavily in means either America are screwing us at the expense of the poor in this country, or it means National are seeking non American investment and we are competing head to head with the sweatshops of Asia.
