Just had a walk past and sit down outside “Occupy Wall Street) in Aotea Square.

Never in my life have I ever seen a bigger ragtag bunch of losers, smelly hippies and general misfits.

All I can say is that they all must have very understanding employers and lots of annual leave saved up to be able to stay there for weeks/months!

I thought it was interesting on the Kim Hill interview that she started talking about “neo-liberal” policies and Friedman said he didn’t use that word and didn’t know what it meant but yet, Kim didn’t take that on board and kept asking him about it, as if he had any idea what she meant by it.

And if they want Key to have a backbone, what about “polling showing that Banks won’t win makes people who may potentially vote ACT think that their vote would be wasted” don’t you and your giggly-ass friends understand? Add on top of that the fact that it will likely result in ACT only getting two MPs into Parliament like in 2005 due to that perception as opposed to the five in 2008 when it was guaranteed that Hide would get in.

A 10 year high in expulsion rates is concerning the Western Bay of Plenty Regional PPTA chairman.

But of course no mention at all of the lack of youth rates and the corresponding disincentives to young people.

Jason Smythe the social statistics of young people are of concern to our country.

Western Bay of Plenty PPTA chairman Jason Smythe says more needs to be done to help youths.

“In fact, one of the first tasks the prime minister assigned to his chief science advisor, Sir Peter Gluckman, was a report exploring the factors underlying adolescent behaviour and indicating where there may be evidence-based opportunities for changes to policy and practices that might help to mitigate its negative outcomes.

“The resulting report was entitled Improving the Transition: Reducing Social and Psychological Morbidity During Adolescence.”

He says there is a link with the 10 year high in expulsion rates and the Gluckman report.

“The report lists the poor outcomes for young people as teenage pregnancy, abortion, binge drinking, bullying, teenage crime, suicide and mental health problems.

Rena: Oil salvage too slow, says minister

A salvage worker is lowered from a helicopter onto the stricken container ship Rena off the coast of Mount Maunganui.

Environment Minister Nick Smith says the process of pumping oil off Rena is too slow and he believes there will be more dangers ahead.

But salvage operators say that trying to increase the pumping speed is difficult.

Mr Smith, who was aboard the HMNZS Pukaki yesterday, said he was still waiting for positive news of increased pumping speeds.

“I’m still not satisfied with the pumping rates. I’d be wanting to see pumping rates of 10 tonnes an hour. We’re hoping, with the booster rate, it’ll get better,” he said.

Fair comment. I would also suggest that Epsom’s voters may have an inkling that JK 2011/2014 could be a totally different leader to what he was 2008/11. If he had broken the electorate’s trust by going back on the promises he made during the last campaign he would now be cut bread.

If ACT hadn’t gone with Banks they may have been looking at 5 to 7 MPs. As it is now they will be lucky to get an electorate MP & 1 or 2 hangers on. ACT have little to bargain with so why should National extend charity to them?

I read your 10.24am earlier….it is food for thought but while it is true that the election is the only poll that counts I don’t share your faith in the humour of Epsom’s voters. He was the only logical candidate for Epsom, far more logical than Brash. Brash should have stood for Tamaki, as Whale said at the time.

Brash’s problem is that he can’t understand why the nation isn’t responding to Orewa II and when they started it with the Maorification debacle that just made it political poison from there on in. It might have worked if they’d gone with Ansell’s original concept rather than watering it down. But my preference and advice would have been: don’t try it at all. Its had its day, stick to what you know and talk about nothing but the economy. For at the end of the day, this is what will capture voters in 2011, just like it did for Clinton in 1992.

That’s the mistake ACT made and I’m not sure its electorally recoverable at this stage, since they’ve now lost heaps of cred. However, fact is, voters who think (i.e. all those who don’t vote or don’t currently intend to vote left) know that Key doesn’t have any fucking guts whatsoever.

They know that Mr Popular is actually a gutless, limp wet noodle on the inside. They know that Mr Popular will do anything to ensure his popularity and they doubt the sycophantic National caucus is capable of doing anything but nod, nay gape, in unison, at their Leaders’ astonishingly brilliant performances.

Yes nasska. The Nat’s caucus behave toward Key the same as a bunch of 7th form schoolgirls would behave toward Ritchie McCaw if he were to come to their school ball.

It’s that bad.

And voters know this, I hope, so they know the pathetic Nats need a backbone, even if it’s only ACT who can fill in till a real backbone comes along. At least bloody Epsom voters better know it. Otherwise it’s all over. The world ends, not on 21/12/2012 as everyone else thinks but on 26/11/2011.

Wouldn’t that be a shame.

Problem is that if Banks is the logical candidate for Epsom then it means that ACT’s pool of talent makes your average birdbath seem like the Mariana Trench. No one this side of the nearest P lab would describe him as a social liberal which is who the average ACT punter seeks to represent him/her. He is a socially conservative, fiscally conservative Nat having a bob each way on what will get his snout back into the political trough.

We differ on our opinions of JK but I like many others will be scrutinising his actions very closely. I reckon by this time next year we’ll know who was right.

I disagree that’s what your average ACT punter around the country pines for.

While the ACT caucus have done various things in that direction, this doesn’t mean this is what its base wants nor what its base thinks is important nor what its base think ACT should in fact represent on the national political stage.

I rather suspect if ACT, a.k.a. Brash started talking about nothing but the economy, this would result in an uptick in the polls.

He can decimate Key and English in an economic debate and this is what, IMO, ACT people pay their subs for. They are disappointed, IMO, that such debate subjects rarely arise and that ACT seemingly does everything it can to avoid talking about the one thing it should be talking about and which it is supremely good at.

Now you’re talking. Dr Brash has a lot to offer the country & as you correctly state few could match him in a debate centred around economic policy. Why he strays from this line is beyond me. As economics is his forte he should have been ACT’s candidate for Epsom where the average voter could be expected to have more financial acumen than in most electorates.

I still disagree that the archetypal ACT voter seeks a MP carrying a banner for authoritarian, moralistic god bothering which is what Banks represents. Most of them have sufficient education & moral fibre to make up their own minds.

Sitting on his butt at a rest stop table was a DOC guy reading the Herald , it transpires he was the co-ordinator – on the beach there were two very earnest and I presume sincere civilians in Hi Viz vest walking the beach, complete with back pack , seriously, mind you, they were nearly two kilometers from the nearest pub and Four Square and they may have had to camp out if a sea fog rolled in. They had managed to save us locals from the eye sore of a broken boogie board as a result of their ramblings.

My convoluted point is – if this is being mirrored on every beach between Waihi and Lottin Point the cost is going to be astronomical for absolutely no gain, utter bullshit

Seems to me that investing in a few $2 compasses & listening to marine weather forecasts to determine wind direction could help direct resources to where they are needed. Still if every bay of every beach is not checked on the hour every hour the Greens will be screeching to their half wit mates in the MSM about decimated wildlife. Does no one think of the sea lice?

Evidently there been some oil around at Te Araroa , not much but thats where its ended up.

If all the Mount beaches are open ( how they could be closed is another issue!!!!) why isn’t that inspirational orator Stuart Crosby getting on the radio and informing people that they do not need to cancel their Xmas accomodation, as I have heard anecdotally that this is occurring?

God knows there are enough fawning reporters looking for someone to say something, he should be able to get unlimited airtime

I would presume that this as an obligation he has to his local business’s to get things rolling

Tauranga in the 37 years I have been has never been business friendly. Oh plenty of noise but also plenty of obstruction, costs and so on. Aided I might add by various stupid political turf wars.
i.e. While it was safe Nat territory they did nothing, They did nothing while Peters was here, Peters twisted Helens arm and we got stuff done. Clarkson kicked butt but got frustrated at the inertia and now we are back to safe National with a plonker for an MP.
Don’t expect much more after the eastern link is done. Only doing that because the had so many without jobs and the road was becoming too dangerous that they had no choice.
As for the Katikati road. Well that plan has been on the go since before I came and its still in the next century plan.

I know there are a few dumb and fucking stupid people out there but do we need to waste taxpayers money on establishing something the world has know for 130 years or so?

Waikato University scientists have been kept busy examining the oil from the Rena.

Professor Alistair Wilkins has been gathering a detailed picture of the oil from the ship’s tanks, surface slicks and the globules on Mt Maunganui beach.

He says the oil contains both petroleum hydrocarbons and poly aromatic hydrocarbons.

Professor Wilkins says the compounds are known to be harmful to humans and wildlife.

He says the information on what is in the oil will be used by authorities trying to determine when it will be safe to eat shellfish and other seafood again.

Hubbie and I were looking at our super funds the other day, thinking it would be great if we could get hold of that money and put it against the mortgage – have it do something other than make fund managers rich.

Yep the most cost effective saving is paying your mortgage or alternatively using the equity to purchase a rental where someone else pays the mortgage. Still the best deal around.
