Found a few interesting quotes and couldn’t resist.

British biologist Brian Goodwin: “Neo-Darwinism has failed as an evolutionary theory that can explain the origin of species, understood as organisms of distinctive form and behaviour. In other words, it is not an adequate theory of evolution. What it does provide is a partial theory of adaptation, or mocroevolution (small scale adapative changes in organisms).”

Paul Sanders and Mae-Wan Ho writing in the Journal of Theoretical biology: “It is now approximately half a century since the neo-Darwinian synthesis was formulted. A great deal of research has been carried on within the paradigm it defines. Yet the successes of this theory are limited to the minutiae of evolution, such as adaptive change in colouration of moths; while it has remarkably little to say on the questions which interest us most, such as how there came to be moths in the first place.”

Lynn Margulis is a world renowned biologist responsible for crucial work on mitochondria. She is Distinguished University Professor of Biology at the Univeristy of Massachusetts. She challenged a conference of molecular biologists to come up with “one, single, unambiguous example” of the formation of new species via an accumulation of mutations to an original species. None has so far been able to do so. She also said that Darwinism will ultimately be regarded as a “minor twentieth century religous sect.”

Regarding some of the “evidence” that was presented by my opponents:

Naturalist Brian Leith: “Can we be certain that a particular fossil, which may appear to be intermediate between other creatures, is really an ancestor? With the growing sophistication of taxonomy there is a feeling that many of the neo-Darwinian assumptions about fossils and ancestry may be scientifically unfounded, and should be dropped. This realization, that the theory may be incapable of helping taxonomy, and may even be a hindrance to it, has led to a rejection of Darwinian ideas among some taxonomists who feel that we should be finding out more about the pattern before we become dogmatic about the process which is supposed to explain it.”

There is much, much more to those willing to look with open minds, and a good number of books out there on the subject. The point is the claim that Darwinian evolution, regardles of how it is named and re-named, is NOT a proven, uncontestable fact. No genuine scientific theory ever is. There are, and I have posted numerous quotes twice now, many secular scientists who question it.

Now there will be howls of outrage about the source of this last quote, but its worth it. 🙂

Science and consensus

Science is constructed on facts, but facts alone do not make science. Simon Singh, in his book “The Big Bang” laid out the basis of the scientific method: that every genuine theory must make a prediction about the universe that can be observed or measured. It the results of an experiment or observation match the theoretical prediction, the theory may be widely accepted: that is, a consensus develops. Singh calls it a “brutal challenge”.

Singh also quotes Max Planck’s observation that science rarely advances by persuading opponents of its merits; rather, opponents grow old and die and succeeding generations, free of the prejudice of the past, more readily adopt the new paradigm.

The problem is that the urgency and magnitude of the problem of climate change does not afford us the luxury of time. This reality makes the matter of denial and obstruction one of great importance, which is why good, upstanding people are willingly putting themselves into a position where arrest is inevitable by protesting outside the White House gates against the exploitation of Canada’s emissions-heavy tar sands oil. I am with them in spirit.

Naomi Oreskes, in “Climate Change: Picturing the Science”, edited by Gavin Schmidt and Joshua Wolf, writes that: “Scientific experts have a consensus: human activities are changing Earth’s climate.” Here is a simple English explanation of the science behind this scientific consensus.

Naomi points out that dissent becomes unproductive when no new evidence is provided to support alternative theories, and crosses the line into denial. She writes: “At this point, the scientific community stops paying attention, because further arguments without further evidence are a waste of time.”

Possibly the world’s most well known name in climate science, James Hansen, puts much of the debate in context when he states that the basis of our understanding of climate is primarily Earth’s paleoclimate history, ongoing global observations and climate models. In fact, his latest paper is built upon empirical evidence only.

As Naomi Oreskes observes: “There is a world of difference between being ahead of your time and being unwilling or unable to to accept a view that has been vindicated by decades of scientific work. It is the difference between being innovative and being stubborn, between a maverick and a mule.”

The beer company held a contest to select a name for the new beer they had been developing. They advertised over all the airwaves and in all the newspapers. They received thousands of submissions.
The panel of judges was kept busy for many weeks sorting through all of the entries. Finally they settled on one particular entry – “Love On A Lake”. The selected entry was given to the president of the company for his approval.
The president’s comment was, “I like the name but, I’m puzzled as to how the contestant selected this name. If he can explain the meaning of the name, I’ll be happy to award the prize to him.”
The judges located the contestant. When they asked him for an explanation, he responded, “Well, love on a lake is fucking near water and that’s what this beer tastes like!!”

Missionary

A missionary gets sent into deepest darkest New Zealand and goes to live with a tribe there. An elderly couple sat through a porno movie twice. They didn’t get up to
leave until the theater was ready to close for the night. “You folks
must’ve enjoyed the show,” the usher said.

“Disgusting,” said the old lady. “It was revolting,” her husband added.
“Then why did you sit through it twice?” the usher asks.

“We had to wait until you turned up the house lights,” the old lady
replied. “We couldn’t find my panties, and his teeth were in them!”

Back when Johnboy was little, he was known as Little Johnboy:

One night Little Johnboy was really scared sleeping by himself at camp, so he sprints out of his tent and runs to his teachers tent and asks “Miss can I please sleep with you tonight ?”.

His teacher replies “NO”

Johnboy moans and says “But my mummy lets me”.

“OK then, just for tonight” the teacher replies.

Johnboy jumps into bed with her and asks “Miss can I please play with your belly button with my finger”.

She again says “NO”.

“But my mummy lets me” says Johnny again.

“Well I suppose it’s OK” replies the teacher.

Things are silent for a few minutes until the teacher leaps up screaming “THAT’S NOT MY BELLY BUTTON”

Little Johnboy replies “It aint my finger either”.

A few weeks ago the Minister for Treaty Settlements indicated that he might try to rush more than 20 settlement bills through Parliament as an omnibus bill before the House rises. Such a scheme would be a travesty of the democratic process since these bills collectively represent the transfer of over $450 million in taxpayer funded cash and assets

The Deed of Settlement states that the Crown recognised the significance of the Waipa River to Maniapoto and quotes the following as evidence: “Waipa she is the life blood of the people. Waipa she is the life blood of the land, verily she is! Indeed she is the unfailing spring of the earth! She is the water that anoints the thymos of man to bind to the tribe the waters of life that issues forth from the lineage of the gods. She is the water that blesses the umbilical chord to ensure the health of descendants of Maniapoto. ‘Tis the water that permanently renders the knot of the navel chord secure and fast.”

That such writing is used in a legal property rights agreement in a Bill in front of Parliament and signed off by a Minister of the Crown (Chris Finlayson) is ludicrous. It highlights serious concerns about the quality of evidence on which multi-million dollar settlements are based. This is an issue raised by the former Waitangi Tribunal Chairman Sir Eddie Durie in 1999 when he outlined how some claimant groups require researchers to remove material that is unhelpful to their case or change their conclusions – as a condition of being paid; how some iwi want to keep their “evidence” away from public scrutiny by asking the Tribunal to keep it secret; and how some researchers become captured by claimants and prevented from taking a balanced view.[1] In other words, truth is no longer the driving force of what has now become a corrupt settlement process.

What your kids and grandkids will be told is that just like the “Pet Rock” fad of the 1970s, “man-made global warming” was officially part of the pop culture past. It rode off into the warm sunset along with Al Gore’s relevance and Rosy O’Donnell’s television career.

The kids can look forward to an episode of “VH1’s I love the New Millennium” where they gather a bunch of comedians to time warp back to 2008 and cleverly lampoon all the environmental religious left folks who scared school children into thinking the world was going to end in the name of man-made global warming.

Cyclists could pay for safer roads: Coroner

A coroner investigating the deaths of three Waikato cyclists has suggested cyclists could be charged levies in future to pay for safety measures to reduce the cyclist road toll.

But cyclists have labelled it a “kneejerk reaction” that is unfair to bike-riders who already pay more than their share in road-user charges.

At an inquest into last November’s fatal accident, in which Kristy King lost control of her car hitting the three cyclists south of Morrinsville, coroner Gordon Matenga put it to witnesses that safer roads for cyclists would cost more money.

I’m not sure how any such levies would work. Only a slight slackening of our obsession with building more roads would free up sufficient resources to fund much better cycle lanes.
