So, who won the Presidential Repub nominee debate yesterday?

Mitt Romney, because he retains the lead. Gingrich 2nd, but he won’t make the finish line (baggage).
Bauchmann just isn’t strong enough to be American president; Pawlenty injured and limping; Santorum
yet to come thru field (he’s good, watch for late run). But wait till Palin comes in, she has more drive and
confidence than all of them together. If mid-range neutralise eachother, will help Palin against a Romney.

I like Ron Paul but needs political experience. Or maybe he’s what America needs?

What are the projected costs of the two inquiries into the collapse of buildings in the CHCH Feb quake? Both have already stated that no one will be ble held liable..So why bother with these inquiries?

Anti-capitalist group Socialist Aotearoa has called on people to join a protest over the price of jerseys and the conditions wages paid to overseas workers who manufacture the jerseys.
Protesters were asked to wear all black clothing for the protest outside Eden Park’s front gate tomorrow at 1pm.
“We’re calling on adidas to immediately raise the wages of all its garment workers in Asia to industry standards, to drop the price of the rugby jerseys to an affordable level and to apologise to New Zealand for its arrogance,” Socialist Aotearoa spokesman Joe Carolan said.

@ joana, I don’t personally need a lynching but I am very interested if there was a systamatic or a systemic failure of design and or maintenance including the reinspection process and activity around the clearance following the Sept4th quake.
All those ‘brick shithouses along Manchester St and elsewhere were just disasters waiting to happen and the Heretage mupetts were responsible for the danger they contained, but the spectacular failures of CTV and PGC require as full an answer as possible.
Wellington has too much vulnerability to allow that not to happen.
That the Grand Chancellor, as representative of many other buildings that survived for an evacuation, remained standing albeit structurally destroyed is the standard so why the difference.
The inquiry cost is minimal if the answers are discovered.

Unless the final recommendation of an inquiry or a commission is to introduce legislation to remove more of the freedoms of the general public they are simply ignored by government. National or Labour….it makes no difference. The setting up of boards & commissions achieve nothing other than enabling the government of the day to appear caring & efficient while wasting more of the taxpayers’ money.

Stall, obfuscate, lie, dodge the issues & prevaricate. Just another day in the life of our parliamentarians.

Why are we having MILK PRICE INQUIRY? I THOUGHT ABOUT THIS AND HERE IS THE ANSWER.
National it would seem at first appearances, would not want to piss off the diary farmers who supply 25% of this nations export income, but the question is do they really care anymore about that?

National have two types of voters these days. Farmers and traditional Nat voters, and the urban national voters. Now we know that to stay in power the Nats. need that urban vote and that urban vote has also changed from blue collar and white collar union type Labour voters to now mostly office and tech workers. (No factories left .)
The Nats. want those votes and when its boiled down farmers are not that many votes as opposed to grabbing the urban seats which are slowly becoming more and more concentrated with voters. Eeven they acknowledge that they need to do this.

Looking at the makeup of the National MP’s and particularly in Cabinet ask yourself how many are farmers by background, how many have been manufacturers of product and sellers of product made in NZ? Few that I could name. The Nat. MP’s consist of lawyers, teachers,academics, ex beneficiaries, ex university students, accountants and so on. somewhat reminiscent of the Labour Party.

White collar, urban dwelling, and not all representative of the Farmers and manufacturers of NZ.
Some like Nick Smith represent the far left looney fringe when it comes to sensible pragmatic solutions for NZ.
Others like Findlayson embody all that is wrong with dealing with this Nations history and finances and the separatism that is evolving.
Even worse is the attempt to retain power by changing the voting system rather than changing the core practice of representation. MMP isn’t the problem. The problem is the use of power of Cabinet and forcing, with the use of whipping, MP’ s who are elected to represent their constituents views to ignore those views at the peril of their funding and expulsion from their party.

So the answer to the question of Why a Milk Price Inquiry?
Because urban voters are forming a greater vote base for the National Party then Farmers and if they lose a couple of seats in the Waikato they will make up the votes in the urban area’s.
We are seeing the National Party take over from the Labour Party in town Labour Stragglers will move to mana et al. Labour will struggle to exist in another election as it no longer has a platform. National will continue with its socialism as it becomes more and more the home for those of the centre and left.
We need the rise of the New right to reclaim the Founding Philosophy of the National Party for they no longer represent the interests of that philosophy.

It’s quite amusing to see desperate please for National to become more right wing, more like ACT, etc, etc. Political parties are about exercising power. National and Labour determinedly occupy a fairly broad centre ground, and share more in the way of ideology than the few issues that distinguish them. This is because they wish to appeal to a broad range of voters. Were National to move to the right, they would lose more votes in the centre than they would pick up from the remnants of ACT.

Were Labour to move more to the left, they would lose more votes than they would pick up from the Greens, Mana, etc.

A good illustration of this inherent conservatism is the general reluctance of the main parties to upset their rivals achievements. So National in 1990 left Labour’s reforms in place. Labour in 1990 did not impose any radical change, and the same went for National since 2008. This is not because they believe that their rival’s achievements were good, but because they fear to alienate the mass of fairly conservative support that makes up the middle ground in New Zealand politics.

This means, they don’t necessarily give a fuck about what the general population thinks about something like asset sales, if asset sales are the right thing to do.

Unfortunately in a democracy it takes just as much effort to sell the really good ideas as it does to sell the majority of them which are the absolutely mental ones that will never work in a gajillion years, like high youth wage rates, et al.

If only people weren’t so fucked in the head, we’d all be a hell of a lot better off.

I think we should insert a trick question in the census: one about celebrities and the other about sport and the people who meet the secret criteria are stricken from the electoral role. See how it works, mm? That’s another really good idea that would be tough to sell.

It’s not fair.

Just how many options does government in New Zealand have. Seems National are happy with a watered down version of socialism, having a self serving wish not to upset the punters. How long can we continue to borrow billions a year before the loan sharks want their pound of flesh. Yes socialism may keep the vast majority happy with their lot but all we are really doing is gifting our sovereignty to the money lenders. When the IMF comes calling the days of socialism will be looked back on in fondness, they will sure as hell beat the days of slavery.

Well they need to take out the comms network somehow Griff, they just do. They couldn’t jam specific numbers in the short time a riot coalesced, not until they trace all the social media connections people have, then they could but I bet they haven’t yet married up that data – yet. So they have to stop it being used, somehow.

About a dozen members of Unite Union are at Auckland’s Eden Park following the reaction to the pricing of the official jersey.

I used to live right opposite the main gates in the 80’s and one day about a dozen turned up and they lit something and presently the cops turned up and put it out. No-one else was there, can’t recall the issue but it was funny.

I wish the cops had done a baton charge, that would have made it even better but sadly that didn’t happen.

Point is tho it was very lonely, pointless, no media eventuated, nothing happened.

Bet this will be on TV One AND 3 tho won’t it. Yes, it’s a gweat big corpowation that’s pwice gauging, just like Fontewwa. And in both cases it’s the childwen who suffer cause (a) they don’t get to be like evewyone else who is a wich pwick and can affowd a jersey and (b) they don’t get milk! Oh dear, it’s a twagedy of Bibwical pwopowtion. Those gweat big meanies.

Don’t quite understand all yr post but what is the point in finding answers if nothing is going to be done about them? Why decide before you do an inquiry that no one is liable. Inquires happen all the time in NZ..Usually about 18 mths /two years after a huge book is produced which about half a dozen really keen , types read..and of course , nothing changes and everything stays the same..I don’ think the cost of inquiries is really that minimal….hotels , lawyers , allowances., admin staff….This money could employ or train several CHCH youths for while.

IMP………..I don’t agree about BACHMAN I thought she did well, certainly stood no shit from Pawlenty and any woman who can raise 5 of her own children and 23 foster children must have picked up some skills along the way. The experts seem to think Gingrich won it, I thought him too angry, too dogmatic, not surprised his staff all quit on him I can’t imagine anyone wanting to work with him. He had plenty of good ideas reminded me of Winston.. I like that CAIN, identify the problem, identify the solution, brief, no political palaver, he would be an ideal vice president runner to show up the indecisive OBAMA and grab black vote. PAUL want America the way it was before the 2nd world war, insular, full employment prosperous and to hell with the rest of the world, let Iran build the A Bomb controlled by the nutter Ahmadinajad and the fanatic Mullah who pulls his strings. No thanks. ROMNEY will probably get it but will prove a mediocre President talks plenty but says little like OBama. Sanctorum and Pawlenty seemed capable but run of mill. HUNTSMAN seemed well grounded and sensible but probably too liberal. PALIN on Fox tonite and the straw vote tomorrow should be interesting.

@ joana, two buildings catastrophically collapsed, PGC built for the CHC Drainage Board early 60s and CTV building built some 10 years later.
Both built with some engineering requirements re EQs although somewhat below what is required today.
Why did those two fail when older and other contemporary structures endured.
The answers to those questions are IMO necessary for the rest of NZ’s buildings of that time.

Believe me when I say I am not normally a supporter of Commissions of inquiry, your points resonate with me, however answers are needed and there are also questions re the CTV structure post Sept 4th and prior to Feb 22nd about the lifting of status and suspected inherent movement and unusual noise observed by survivors of those who worked there.

No idea nasska, but I hope it’s denominated in sea shells because we have lots of those.

China and Russia are already advocating reserve replacement but question is: to what? I doubt currently encumbered creditor banks are going to let their own book values become engangered just cause the USD is dying. A solution will be found but time it could be interpreted in some ways, is running out and the Euro, the only other viable alternative for a single currency as opposed to a basket, is a real basket case at the mo. Poor ole ECB isn’t in any position to become the world’s Fed and won’t be for the foreseeable.

I suspect the correct answer is to request the creditor banks to make an appropriate book entry and the whole thing would disappear just like in the movies, but that probably won’t be what happens.

While the overall unemployment rate in New Zealand is 6.5 per cent, the rates for young people ages 15 to 19 is 27.6 per cent.

Of all unemployed, 43.8 per cent are aged under 25.

could include addressing both youth unemployment and training and young women on the DPB but it is not expected to include a return to youth rates.

In his speech this morning, Finance Minister Bill English said in a growing economy “we will need everyone who can work to be in work”.

“Unemployment among those aged 25 and over is already down to 4.5 per cent, with an ageing population leaving the workforce in increasing numbers,” English said.

Where do they get this stuff?
Just a few days ago there were posts on here showing that there are more over 65’s in the workforce than ever.

That capability already exists in UK mobile phone networks. It was used after the recent London bombings. The big-switch mechanism basically renders all ordinary cellphones inoperable, while leaving those of police, emergency services and key leaders still working and with heaps of capacity. One NZ mobile network provider claims to have this capability but doesn’t. Another doesn’t claim to have it, but has recently implemented it. And the others don’t count 🙂

Spare a thought for Helen Clark. Just seen a full face photo of her over on KB where she is singing her own praises about her saving the Tampa.

I was shocked to see all that dental work she spent on her teeth has failed. You have to compare this recent photo with others taken pre election in 2008 when she had perfect white teeth.

Three British educational institutions were commissioned by the government to discover why the human penis is the shaped the way it is. Oxford University allocated a budget of £500,000 for research. After 2 years they concluded that the reason the head of the penis is wider than the shaft is that it fits better, when in situ, so to speak. This would prevent leakage of semen and increase the probability of successful fertilisation.
Cambridge University spent £750,000 on a research programme that lasted years. The results showed that the penis widened near the tip because it maximised the number of nerve endings stimulated during sex. This would lead to increased sensitivity and a better chance of impregnation.

It is a story well worth recording and one that deserves more study. From a distance, it is like an allegory of social breakdown and recovery: initially, the crowding and confusion lead to a severe stressing of the social fabric, a weakening of the body politic, so to speak, of which criminals take advantage; then order is reasserted, the criminals are eliminated, responsibility is demanded and granted, and a social microcosm is restored.

A big day for the National Party today? John Key is expected to announces policies on welfare reform, focused on young people.

All sensible stuff, I’m sure, but why bother? National is riding high in the polls and is looking at being able to form a government without a need for coalition partners or support parties. So why announce more policy now that they have no intention of following through?

National has chosen a traditional ‘do nothing’ policy for its first term, and has been rewarded with huge popularity. Why change a wining formula?
