I don’t propose to reverse the irreversible. What colonial powers did 150 years ago would not seem acceptable now. If it were somehow possible for Maori to have that choice, what would they have chosen? If we were to discover a lost island today in the same state as NZ 200 years ago, what would we do about it? Would you civilise the inhabitants?

Yes, the treasty was written in English. There was also a Maori version. There is deabte about how much of the specific terms of the treaty were understood by the signatories. Either way, the treaty was ignored for many years. Claims to resources not exploited at the time the treaty was signed may seem a mystery to some, but someone gets to control those resources. Modern understandings of the treaty principles help us to address those questions.

In the past a lot of Pakeha spoke Maori , including one of my Scottish ancestors..They probably didn’t attach any hysteria to this so why get hysterical now? NZ has been out of step with other countries in being so mono lingual..knowing other languages is an advantage not a curse.
My husband speaks the equivalent of about seven languages…English , Malay , Mandarin and Chinese dialects..Hupei , Hokkien , Foo Chow and some Hakka , Teo Chew and Cantonese. This makes it very easy and safe for us to travel in various parts of Asia.
I learned various languages at school and later on in NZ but in the old way of teaching , the emphasis was on writing rather than speaking.
I accept that making something compulsory will cause resentment.

More votes for NZ First in Dunedin..It has long been a place where it is difficult to find work but the big money boys don’t seem to understand ordinary people and they certainly don’t seem to care. Nothing certain about this coming election.

Me neither, but it seems to be used a lot in a context where it is a substitute for more derogatory words. I’ve not seen it usedin any case where ‘Maori’ wouldn’t be a better choice (sorry for the double negative). I think it’s used as a bit of a code.

It’s a word that’s already been appropriated in a positive sense by legendary NZ hiphop group Dam Native, much in the same way NWA did with nigga.

It’s practically a source of pride that starboard refers to Maori as natives, as it reinforces their first nation status and as such, affords natives special rights and privileges not due later immigrants, along with ensuring steps be legislated to safeguard native culture, language, traditions and customs.

Taranaki is part of a chain of volcanoes to which Ngauruhoe, Ruapehu and Tongariro are all the same type. Tectonic shifts, where plates slide past each other, signifies that Taranaki has moved due to a progressive southward movement of volcanic activity which naturally involved significant eruptions from the Tongariro region.

If one were to record such events in legend and enshrine them in traditions to then be passed down for generations by word of mouth, what better way than to mythologise a tale of 2 neighbourly volcanoes at war over the affections of a pretty hill on the shores of an active caldera during a plate shift ?

Are you starting to see how it works nasska ?… and how it would benefit kids to learn history, geology and a whole bunch of other good shit while respecting native tradition ?

Want me to tell you how the sun slowed down and the earth and sky separated now ?

Of course our traditions predate known history according to the whiteman. The story of Taranaki parallels itself in the travels of Maori and their forbears and the settlement/creation of this land. Naturally they brought with them older traditions. I think people who belittle “primitive” people underestimate the depth of their knowledge and connection with the spirit of the land. It’s clearly obvious that the more isolated the tribal population the more connected and spiritual one of that tribe is that’s simply the case throughout history and regardless of nation or timeframe up to today with the people in the hills of PNG and elsewhere.

It is we who have lost that connection, not they who are primitive.

West-European Caucasians like many of us are furthest of all from it, Scandanavians are closer than us, Asians have something different don’t they, can’t quite put a finger on it, Africans have it in spades, Aboriginals and Maori, you bet.

I think it’s great. Fact is, if we hadn’t invaded a purely Maori Aotearoa would be a fascinating place, for Maori have many amazing world-beating qualities. Like all of us not all are good.

However it didn’t happen like that, it just didn’t. I wish Maori would get over their anger that we defeated them. It simmers in quite a few and that’s really obvious. Get over it.

Similarly I ask, how come it is so difficult for some to acknowledge the integrity, intelligence, courage and insight which Maori bring to the table in almost every formal forum we have deigned to involve them in?

You ask most consultative committees whether Maori have added or negated value. Sure the media plays up taniwha but we should understand this is the land connection issue. Maori are more connected to it than we are. Period.

I’m not suggesting we pay any koha. I’m suggesting we stop laughing, stay alert for koha requests, and offer to listen.

So the suggestion that our islands were untouched by humans just 1,000 years ago (ie before the arrival of Maori) just doesn’t stack up. Sorry. Perhaps Maoridom would agree to a full investigation of certain archaeologic sites to help establish the facts? Not holding my breath as the entitlement gravy train would be well de-railed is Maori were indeed found to be colonizers, ie guilty of the very same ‘evil’ that has been previously, and exclusively attributed to European settlers.

I’d welcome any investigation that establishes fact, especially if it debunks that Celtic bullshit some of you krazykiwis espouse.

The sites in question, if indeed they exist, were in all probability built by previous settlers from Pasifika after having picked up influences from the America’s, by way of Rapanui (Easter Island).

But your original point I call stupid on and that you continue to put forward, is that the original settlers were Maori. Maori is what the original and successive Pasifikan pioneers became, not what they were when they arrived.

It’s like the first Euro settlers were Scottish, Irish, English or whatever but not New Zealanders. NZers is what you all became.

MNIJ, seems like the media is making up quotes by Palin out of whole cloth these days, as she’s pretty much shut them out of the tour she’s doing (awww, poor media) and they can’t stand it. They’re so used to being included.

Politico knew they likely wouldn’t get a quote from Sarah Palin for the latest hit piece they published so they made one up. One of the authors is the former chairman of the Democratic Party of Virgina.

Politico wrote:
Will Sarah Palin’s intensifying rivalry with Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-Minn.) cause the former Alaska governor to run for president?
The first female Republican vice presidential nominee clearly believes she is the one who has paid the heavy dues by bearing the brunt of the “liberal elite” attacks to help build the tea party, social conservative wing of the GOP.
Palin’s bus tour had some of the hallmarks of a primal scream: “I built this constituency, not Bachmann, not anyone else,” she said. Looking at it through her eyes, she has a point.

Palin’s camp responded –

An absurd opinion piece in Politico includes a quote attributed to Governor Palin that is a total fabrication and yet is deliberately written to appear as if it is a legitimate direct quote. By any standard this is unacceptable even for an opinion piece. This puts us in mind of a real quote of something Governor Palin actually did once say to the media: “Quit making stuff up.”

The Left is getting desperate. Politico has since retracted what they said. I guess that’s the new tactic – make something up completely, wait a day until it is reported, and then retract what you said. Shit, that’s not journalism.

re: Thatcher – You’re talking about the word of an “anonymous” ally to Margaret Thatcher who said Palin was “nuts” and it was picked up by the US Press who portrayed it as if it was Thatcher’s position itself when Thatcher has not made any statements.

@reid – Exactly! It means we’re all related. So the very idea that one ethnic group has territorial ownership rights in perpetuity is ridiculous. The Maori gravy train, which benefits few and enslaves many, is predicated on this false belief.

It’s a shame, because Politco doesn’t really need to make up stupid Palin comments – she provides them herself each day. Did you enjoy her Paul Revere debacle and the way her drones tried to edit Wikipedia to make it seem that she knew what she was talking about

@mikenmild – If individual Maori want to control their destiny, then yes. If not, they’re probably assuring themselves and their their descendents undending, bitter resentment .. together with economic dependence.

milkenmaid, Paul Revere? Who cares? Obama has said stupid stuff, but the media won’t report his mistakes. Heck, he was supposed to give a toast at the dinner for the Queen, pulled out cards from his pocket and embarrassed himself by droning on and on while tea was getting cold. Someone should have told him that a toast is not a speech.

As far as Palin, at least she wants what is best for America. She’s patriotic and she’s been Mayor and Governor, among other things. Obama’s done nothing but talk and write – he’s unqualified. Shit, he had to be called in from a golf game to watch video of Bin Laden being captured, because he was too indecisive to order it himself – so they went over his head and just did it.
