Let’s Not

Labour have done an online game, to try and push their message against asset sales. Not sure how effective it will be, but I did find it amusing.

well lets see, so far everything they’ve tried has turned to custard and blown up in their faces and their answer has been to do more of the same. What you THINK is going to happen?

And since labour is going to be a one trick pney and make asset sales the trick shouldn’t they replace Goff first?

Well the Aussies can have the Huntly power station, we’re not allowed to burn coal in NZ any more let a lone dig it up.

Not sure how well Aussie bashing is going to do Labour’s votes. Have they ever tried being productive before or perhaps using arguments/policies that involve numbers or are remotely convincing?

If National did this, Labour would have called it ‘immature’ and ‘out of touch with the important issues’. But as Labour has done it, I suspect they’ll frame it as ‘cutting-edge’ and ‘speaking to peoples’ concerns’.

I think it’s a much better idea than their previous ones. It’s entertaining enough that people could conceivably share it on Facebook. And it doesn’t open itself up to the public putting their own wacky content in there.

The only thing I wonder about is the copyright issues around Luke/Leia/Vader.

[DPF: Oh yeah it is definitely a massive breach of copyright]

The thing that makes me laugh about people who disregard selling state assest is that thinking that we lost something.
They seem to loose to sight that we acutally have sold something for money, we have not given it away.
NZ government uses that money to pay for Health, Welfare etc in New Zealand, things that people who rally against selling assest want more money to be spent on. Money that I guess they think grows on trees

The never answered question:

Given the assertion that all government asset sales are bad (aka “Stop Asset Sales”), does this mean that

(a) The Government currently owns exactly the right mix of assets

(b) The Government only owns assets that it should own, but should also buy more

(c) All assets should be Government owned, so it naturally follows that all asset sales are bad

(d) Something else (explain)

i know, i know, why do i do it. Ok i watched the lame Jacinda on TV1 this morning and straight away she started on about selling state assets. Yawn.
i understood what was being proposed was partial selldowns and maintaining majority stake.
why do national allow labour drones to get away with “asset sale” lines? Point out the weasel words that are being used. Fight back.
If i own a company 100% and sell a minority stake, i do not consider myself as having sold the asset. do not let them set the agenda by choosing the language.
– sorry if off topic…..

Fully agree with DD above. Selling a minority stake of a company to raise capital is not “asset sales” as Labour are making it out to be.

If anything, Labour should focus their attack on the lost dividend revenue in the long term from the shares sold. This is a much more credible sounding message if you ask me.

But since they haven’t already there is probably a reason for that… Apart from the fact they have the lights turned off and can’t see what they’re doing at the moment… And that most of their voters probably don’t know what the word dividend means.

You gotta laugh at the supreme irony here.

Let look at it.

So the Gumint sells 49% of power station to Kiwis. By the Socialists own reckoning those who buy the shares are rich pricks hated and loathed.

So the Gumint collects the coin from the rich pricks and puts it to use in Health Education etc etc instead of borrowing the same money from the rick prick banks overseas who require noty only the capitla repaid but also high rates of interest and all in foreign coin.

And the Socialists say its a bad bad thing.

So they would rather borrow from overseas or raise the taxes on the upper and middle class voters.

The good: clever idea – animation and interaction is quite good.

The bad: lousy implementation. The Hone Harawira sketch worked because it’s completely believable, but the Brash Alien, “Gerald and the bikini”, and others were just dumb. No humour, just pathetic. As someone above said, it is humour for the 13 year olds. I don’t see many swinging voters being influenced by this.

If you mean voters who actively choose their party based on current feelings rather than ideology, then I would suggest National.

Nah, it’s clever. You guys won’t like it. Of course you won’t. You’re not the target audience.

Their objective is to spread the Stop Asset Sales brand. They don’t even need to be convincing viewers that their stance is the right one. They just need to make that the topic of discussion. So they’ve got a replayable game mechanic with a variety of mildly amusing animations, sharing functionality at the end (only Facebook, but that’ll do), and the final choice in each iteration of play is the asset-sales choice.

Unlike previous ridiculous “social media” attempts, the message is inherent in the mechanic. You can’t engage with it without hearing about asset sales (as opposed to personalised Labour billboards that can say anything you like).

If it wasn’t for the copyright stuff, I’d say it’s a clever little device. Unfortunately, unless they sorted out those rights beforehand, and unless they’re extremely confident of some kind of artistic/satirical exception helping them out, they’re going to get sprung for it, and “Lucas Arts Sues Labour Party” will be the headline, rather than anything about asset sales.

Other than that, it’s an idea I’d be proud of, and an execution I wouldn’t cry myself to sleep over.

Doesn’t work for me, wrong version of flash apparently, or maybe it doesn’t like Firefox.

Anyway, reminds me of something I heard….podcast somewhere. A guy talking about simulation games, and in particular Sim City, Civilisation and the like. And how they have inbuilt communist tendencies – basically every one of those games models a planned economy….you as the player make every decision centrally, and the games generally have relatively simplistic and homogenous preferences of the “sims” that live within it. In short, they’re training the next generation of socialists.

Where is the game where the sims in it are all very different, with different wants and needs? And you are best placed to win the game if, instead of building everything yourself and making every decision, you just lay down some basic regulations and let the market run it’s course? Presumably that would be a boring game….but it’s interesting how political and economic thought turns up in places like games.

From the sounds the game we’re talking about from Labour, it isn’t really in this league, but interesting story nonetheless.

PaulL, not in the original Sim City, the only I played. You only control zoning, where to place power, fire and police stations and local taxes. There aren’t many jurisdications that I’ve heard of where those things are decided privately. The land is sold to whomever wants to buy it and they build whatever they want on it as long as it’s the right type of building for that zone (industrial, commercial or residential). No resource consents, no density controls (a huge sykyscraper can be built in the middle of suburban neighborhood) or anything else like that.
