End of world classified ad from New York Craigslist (via Sideswipe)

Are you attending the Rapture on May 21? I expect to be left behind when it happens, so if you aren’t going to need your worldly possessions, be they money, cars, canned food, durable goods etc, I would gladly take them off your hands. Serious responses only, please. And remember time is short … Am willing to travel for said goods.

Opportunism or tongue in cheek? Anyone here wanting to dispense with unnecessaries before Saturday?

Fifty people owe $11 million in student debt

Wow. That’s $220,000 for each of those 50. How the heck…?

What caught my eye though was the statement from NZUSA co-president Max Hardy:

the recently introduced limit of seven years’ equivalent fulltime study per person was “arbitrary and restrictive”

You know these folk have been saying how I got free tertiary study, with no debt blah blah blah. When I was at university in the 1980’s the student allowance was available (this is from memory) “for five years or two degrees”. Well I didn’t concentrate fully and missed out on by Bachelor’s (after the usual three years) by one paper. One paper. Really pissed me off but I went back for the fourth year thinking I’d still have the allowance, just not be able to get it for a full 2 years of Masters study if I went that way.

Well the administrators at Waikato told me I couldn’t get the student allowance because I wasn’t doing Masters level, even though the rules said it was available for “5 years or 2 degrees”. Course back then I wasn’t a shit-stirrer so I just capitulated and got a part time job to get me through.

But it strikes me as funny that now seven years is “arbitrary and restrictive” when all I got was three…

O’Reilly in NZHerald on Kyoto II or Cancun II is balanced. But on State-owned TV we continue to get rubbish on CO2….

A person named Jan Wright, holding the position of Parliamentary Commissioner for the environment, this morning (TVOne) demonstrated an abysmal lack of knowledge in respect of CO2. Her opposition to mining Southland’s lignite is predicated on her belief that the brown coal will produce massive amounts of so-called “greenhouse gases”. Worse, she described the culprit as CO2. If she had the slightest knowledge of problems associated with lignite use – problems which be managed – she would have referred to sulphur and other nasties.
Pollution by solids is always confused with CO2 which is not and never has been a problem.
She argued, so it would seem, that marginal increases in the concentration “of what is no more than a trace gas, amounting in total not to 10% of the earth’s atmosphere, not even to 5% – nay, not even to 1%. Can bring about cataclysmic changes in global climate. So, what exactly is the percentage concentration of CO2 in the atmosphere? Why, to be sure, it is a gasping, asphyxiating 1/27th part of a single percentage point” (R.C.E.Wyndham, Oxford, UK).
The more CO2 the better.

By the way Ms Wright; when did you swap your car (or your bus, train or aircraft travel) for Shanks Pony or a bicycle?

It has now been demonstrated how space particles entering the atmosphere – a process which, crucially, is modulated by solar activity – seed cloud formation.

“With the new results just published in the recognised journal Geophysical Research Letters, scientists have succeeded for the first time in directly observing that the electrically charged particles coming from space and hitting the atmosphere at high speed contribute to creating the aerosols that are the prerequisites for cloud formation.

The more cloud cover occurring around the world, the lower the global temperature – and vice versa when there are fewer clouds. The number of particles from space vary from year to year – partly controlled by solar activity. An understanding of the impact of cosmic particles – consisting of electrons, protons and other charged particles – on cloud formation and thereby the number of clouds, is therefore very important as regards climate models.”

So solar activity controls cloud formation which controls the weather.

Note that for the past few years the climate alarmists have been trying to dismiss such a physical process, since having the sun control the weather, rather than CO2, doesn’t fit with their self-serving agenda.

DPF’s post yesterday on Dairy farms not paying their share of tax elicited 119 opinions and nearly 100 of them commented through a fog of ignoring standard business accounting, ignoring the difference between gross and net incomes, ignoring the extreme financial pressure exerted when capital stock have to be sold in drought/flood events incurring abnormal tax liabilities that are the main thrust of declaring an adverse weather event, ignoring the exposure that many rapidly expanding highly leveraged entities are incurring and the most salient fact that the year chosen by “rooter” Nash was when the payout plummetted to just over $4.00 leading to major losses for most operators.

Some 12 000 dairy farms paying local body rates of say $20 000 each (est), total $240 000 000, then total all the extortion involved in having to obtain RMA consents to dig a drain, build an effluent pond, form a road, build a shed, sneeze, take a dump, say another odd mill or several, now that is really fair eh.

Thank all the gods for the dairy industry, $11 billion in 2010 while the GFC and its fragile recovery are the focus of the naval gazers.

Deadline day for Waiwhetu Maori in Lower Hutt to hand over $150,000 in a deal that would let them keep the waka Te Raukura has passed – but no money has changed hands. Instead, Te Runanganui o Taranaki Whanui ki te Upoko o te Ika a Maui Inc wrote to Wellington City Council yesterday repeating its position that payment would only be made once a settlement agreement was signed.

Wellington City Council is now seeking legal advice. On April 20, councillors voted to give Maori 28 days to front up with the cash, which the council insists is a binding agreement.

Ender, David Cunliffe is correct about the problems with Govt forecasting.

See my comment on the other thread “Cunliffe Poll”. In saying that, Labour relied heavily on the same forecasting methods from Treasury (as the current National Govt does) when they (Labour) were in Govt, but now Labour is criticizing (as the opposition).

Dominique Strauss-Kahn is now being held in a unit reserved for people with communicable diseases. It seems the women he is accused of assaulting lives in an apartment building rented exclusively for adults with HIV/AIDS.
Strauss-Kahn, if the allegations of rape are true, may well have given himself a life sentence.

There are a heap of stories and rumours on the Strauss-Kahn case, we’ll have to see what turns out to be true, if that’s possible in the media and legal circus. But this statement…

His wife, Anne Sinclair, visited him in jail. “I do not believe for a single second the accusations levelled against my husband,” she said in a statement.

…surprises me, although I guess they could have had a very “open” marriage. But if the HIV story is correct she may not feel so supportive.

Did anyone else notice the comments about the murder/suicide in Oz? The previous incidents murder/suicide in NZ were selectively highlighted. That is the ones where the father is the perpetrator. There have been plenty of cases where the mother was the perpetrator but the normal response is to make excuses for the woman unlike when a father commits the same despicable crime.

This happened on the same day that a woman Whangarei was found not guilt of murder but guilty manslaughter for the brutal killing of her young child.

It would be nice to have one law for all applying to men and women particularly when it come to the ill treatment including killing of defenseless children.

I was more hoping to get at the fact that Cunliffe is crowing on about how badly we have been doing since Wonder Woman left NZ to the National dogs.

GDP per capita 1.3% down from half year update projection doesn’t seem terribly bad to me considering.

As an aside, looking at the World Bank World Development Indicators via Google Public Data, I notice NZ is one of a very select few countries to have an uptick in GDP per capita post-2008. The world average and certainly most other countries show a distinct fall, some very severe. Also, by the figures David Cunliffe listed on his post we currently sit somewhere about $4k per annum above where we were at (with Labour) before the bubble ~2007. Not much to crow for about Labour when you look at things as a whole?

Some legal eagle probably needs to answer that, I did hear that some law in the US allows them to claim the moon by virtue of landing there first (some enterprising dodgy outfit even sells real estate there on that basis), but my guess is that it isn’t recognized outside the US. I suspect that only right to occupy a particular area would apply to any permanent Martian colony.

Not as far as I know, for the same reason the US could not claim Luna as part of their country by dint of landing there first (though I’m tempted to re-run Eddie Izzard’s Have You Got A Flag routine).

As I recall the Outer Space Treaty forbids such claims.

Please also be reminded that during the Auckland Council Mayoral campaign, ex-Auckland City Council Mayor John Banks, was a loud and proud $upercity supporter.

I’ve spoken to a number of Epsom voters who knew nothing about the proposed 4.9% Auckland Council rate increase.

Many from the Remuera, Parnell and Newmarket shopping centres, enthusiastically took postcards to send to Prime Minister John Key, pledging ‘to consider not paying this proposed Auckland Council 4.9% rate increase.

The ‘books’ are NOT open.
The use of private contractors – especially consultant contractors is simply out of control.
There is NO ‘line-by-line’ accounting.
The public are being used as a giant CA$H COW all pay – no say.

(I will be giving an update on these developments at the Auckland Council Governing Board meeting on Tuesday 24 May 2011, 10am at the former Manukau City Council building.)

I see you haven’t completely got the Bank of America connection yet, and how it is in turn connected to other certain multi-national corporate big businesses, and how they all connect back to John Key. Keep working on it, you’ll get there eventually.

Maybe she thinks her current campaign for the Howick Ward will be more successful than her last (the Mayoral elections for Auckland).

Of the total votes cast, PB got …… 0.55% of the vote! This was worse than the idiots who forgot to put a tick in any box at all (blank – 0.84%).

So if PB changed her name by deed poll to “blank” she could be assured of an increase in support at the next elections!

Not sure about the busking angle – maybe she was explaining to the good folk of Epsom the reasons why she struggled to reach 0.6% in the Mayoralty race… whilst coming across as an off colour Joan Baez with a bad case of croup.

Actually, ‘Johnboy’ most Epsom voters with whom I conversed, were not only very appreciative that someone was making an effort to inform them about the 4.9% proposed Auckland ($upercity) Council rate increase, (of which the overwhelming majority knew NOTHING) – but that I had organised an action they could take to DO something about it.

(Feedback I have had indicates that a number of the ‘good citizens of Epsom’ were also very appreciative of the work myself and the Water Pressure Group have done over the years opposing Metrowater and water privatisation.)

Most decent, fair-minded, sensible Kiwis give credit where it is due, and are appreciative of work done in the public interest.

Arguably most ‘good citizens’ don’t want their rates to go up, when there is no ‘line-by-line’ accounting and the money spent on consultants and private contractors is simply ‘out of control’?

Of course, gormless, unquestioning ‘ca$h cows’ with obviously more $$$$ than sense – like ‘Elaycee’ – don’t fall into the above-mentioned category.

(Meant of course in a caring way 🙂

PS: Did you like the hoardings that have gone up in the Howick Ward ‘Elaycee’?

The only time you appear near the top of an elections result sheet, is when its listed in alphabetical order.

Have a problem with English comprehension do you ‘ciaron’?

Getting a close second – only 758 votes behind Citizens & Ratepayers candidate Noelene Raffills) and nearly 4000 votes more than the City Vision candidate, Douglas Mansill, proves the opposite to the point that ‘Elaycee’ was attempting to make in her customary uninformed way.

ie: If names were ranked according to election results and not alphabetically – I would have been ranked second – which is as close as you can get to the ‘top of the list’ without winning the election.

Can I make the point any clearer for you – or have you ‘got it’ now?

Ha ha – firstly, the results you have provided are dated…. 2000! 11 years ago! But, yup I agree – with alphabetical listing used, PB is near the top. But in terms of the result – you were down the gurgler. And yet you seem to think that this is a measure of “success”?? EEEK!

But if this really excites you, perhaps you should change your name to ‘Aardvark’ and be done with it – then you’ll always be “near the top of the list”. Or if the moniker ‘Aardvark’ doesn’t spin your wheels, how about adopting my earlier suggestion that you change your name by deed poll to… “blank” – because ‘blank’ received more votes than you did in the Auckland Super City Mayoral Election. Blank! FFS, Penny notso, the number of dimwits who didn’t tick any box at all, outnumbered the total votes you received and yet you come to this blog, infiltrate it with regurgitated spin and bollocks, get smacked down repeatedly when your crap is exposed as propaganda and still consider yourself electable?

I’m sure the voters in the Howick Ward will have the last say on 27th May. I’m pleased I’m one of them.

FYI – yesterday I checked with the Howick by-election Returning Officer.

So far only 22% of voters have done so……….

Voting closes at midday Friday 27 May 2011.

Best you rally around all your friends who are quite happy to pay the proposed 4.9% Auckland ($upercity) Council rate increase to get their votes in!

Shouldn’t take you very long………………

(Think those NOT opposed to the proposed 4.9% Auckland ($upercity) Council rate increase, will be a VERY small ‘minority’ group 🙂

The Secret Diary of Water Woman aged 50 something (& getting desperate)

Monday: Resolved to seek psychiatric help with this compulsion to get elected to something. Got owned on Kiwiblog.

Tuesday: Missed early morning meds. “Elaycee” on Kiwiblog insists that getting less votes than the blank ballot papers is not winning. Can’t follow the man. It’s very confusing.

Wednesday: Spent morning cleaning spittle off keyboard & wiping walls. Memo to self…don’t write political slogans with own shit. The nice people on Kiwiblog have offered counselling.

Thursday: Handed out pamphlets in Epsom. Using the “$” instead of “S” in everything I write is a masterstroke…..it’s only a matter of time before I’m congratulated on my brilliance. “Ciaron” on Kiwiblog must be scrolling past my comments. I’ll send him a carton of my election speeches on CD – he’s bound to see things my way then.

Friday: Attended conference on collecting water in buckets (must remember to include in CV). Down to fortyseven cats…will call into SPCA on way back from electioneering. New jacket fits well & the fluoro orange colouring suits my hair but the ties are all on the back. Must tell my adoring fans on Kiwiblog.

The essence of the article is…
“The top one thousandth of the British working population currently receives 5 per cent of the country’s earnings, a ratio equivalent to that in the 1940s, the report says. If these trends continue, income for the highest paid will account for 14 per cent of the country’s total by 2030”

That extra money for the top 1000 comes would be at the expense of the lesser paid.

I don’t know if this is accurate, and they don’t know the trend will continue. Although, you’d think executives will receive even larger increases when the economy returns to health.

Once upon a time, allegedly, in a nice little forest, there lived an orphaned bunny and an orphaned snake.
By a surprising coincidence, both were blind from birth.

One day, the bunny was hopping through the forest, and the snake was slithering through the forest, when the bunny tripped over the snake and fell down. This, of course, knocked the snake about quite a bit.

“It’s quite OK,” replied the snake. “Actually, my story is much the same as yours. I, too, have been blind since birth, and also never knew my mother. Tell you what, maybe I could slither all over you, and work out what you are, so at least you’ll have that going for you..”
“Oh, that would be wonderful” replied the bunny.

So the snake slithered all over the bunny, and said, “Well, you’re covered with soft fur; you have really long ears; your nose twitches; and you have a soft cottony tail. I’d say that you must be a bunny rabbit.”

“Oh, thank you! Thank you,” cried the bunny, in obvious excitement.
The bunny suggested to the snake, “Maybe I could feel you all over with my paw, and help you the same way that you’ve helped me.”

So the bunny felt the snake all over, and remarked, “Well, you’re smooth and slippery, and you have a forked tongue, no ears, no backbone and no balls.
I’d say you must be either a union leader or possibly someone high up in the Labour caucus”.
