One of the charities New Zealand First gave money to has returned the donation.

Party leader Winston Peters announced on Sunday the $158,000 it wrongly spent during the last election had been shared out to “worthy causes” but would not identify them.

The Cystic Fibrosis Association announced last night it had decided not to accept NZ First’s $10,000 donation, The Dominion Post reported.

Association chief executive Kate Russell said it was unclear whether the party had the right to give the money to charities.

NZ First initially wanted to give all the money to the Starship Hospital, but the board turned it down for the same reason.

It it a matter of public record that Peters tried to make donations to other charities, but given that he refuses to name them or verify the amounts, it is not possible to verify that. But the money was not Peters’ to give away; it was misappropriated from taxpayers like you (assuming that you pay tax) and me.

That’s why I will continue, at every opportunity, to challenge Peters. He is a charlatan, and is wholly untrustworthy IMHO. Bear in mind that as the 48th Parliament drew to a close, he was formally censured by his peers for knowingly misleading them and the House. Politics in New Zealand is better without him.

And don’t forget that the Greens, the Maori Party, United Future and two independent MPs supported the censure motion. Only Labour and NZ First opposed it.

The Government has funded legal representation for the 29 families of the dead miners and paid for legal assistance for the company’s contractors and workers.
He said the company would be expected to answer questions if called by the commission, which had extensive subpoena powers, whether or not it had legal representation.

Contradictions on Key’s intentions with Epsom and Ohariu:

Nats won’t campaign to beat Hide or Dunne: Key

Prime Minister John Key has given a strong indication that National will not make a serious attempt in the November 26 election to win seats held by party leaders who support the Government.

ACT leader Rodney Hide holds Epsom, previously a National seat, and is in Parliament because of strategic voting to give the Government a partner party.

United Future leader Peter Dunne has held Ohariu, in his own right, since 1984.

Both parties have support agreements with the Government, and both leaders are ministers.

“We’re certainly not embarking on a campaign to knock them out of Parliament,” Mr Key said today.

“But on the other side of the coin, we recognise people are free to vote how they want and at the end of the day they may choose not to support local MPs.”

Mr Key said National’s main aim in Epsom would be to get as many party votes as possible but he would not be pinned down on whether that was intended to give Mr Hide a free ride on the electorate vote.

Some National Party supporters in Epsom have said they want to get rid of Mr Hide, and Mr Key said the voters were free to support whoever they wanted.

“We obviously have a constructive working relationship with ACT, but in the end whether they vote for Rodney Hide or a National candidate is in the hands of individuals in Epsom,” he said.

“I’d love us to win every electorate but at the end of the day I want to win as much of the party vote as we can.”

National hasn’t yet selected its candidates for the seats.

Mr Key said no deals had been made with anyone.

In good news, I read an academic paper in some rag called Environmental Politics the other day, investigating how to effectively indoctrinate primary schoolchildren into becoming good little neo-luddites. Turns out educative programmes in schools disguised as part of the curriculum barely work. Huh. Don’t worry though, the authors suggesting stuffing it down their little throats even harder as a solution. Lovely people, environmentalists.

Over the past three weeks, I’ve been consulting with state and territory ministers, and the government of New Zealand, about minimum energy and greenhouse standards for appliances such as fridges and TVs.

It’s in the interests of both countries that we achieve consistent standards and clear labelling of equipment in all our homes, and that’s what this co-operative reform will deliver.

The proposal is one of a range of energy-efficiency measures that the federal government is working on, which are aimed at reducing household energy bills and reducing business costs.In Auckland, I met the two New Zealand Climate Change Ministers, Nick Smith and Tim Groser, and the acting Energy Minister Hekia Parata, as well as business and industry leaders.

One purpose was to pursue the equipment energy standards proposal, but another was to listen to the attitudes in New Zealand about the carbon price, which has been in place there since 2008, and how we can learn from the New Zealand experience.

The New Zealand carbon price is implemented through an emissions trading scheme (ETS). The New Zealand ETS is presently in a transitional fixed price period with a carbon price of NZ$12.50 per tonne until 2012.

There is assistance to energy-intensive trade-exposed industries, using eligibility tests similar to those developed for the Carbon Pollution Reduction Scheme. There is bipartisan support for that ETS.

It seems to be well understood by the New Zealand community that not only has a carbon price not damaged the local economy, it has demonstrably spurred investment in and development of clean energy sources, and other emissions reductions.

In a recent speech, Mr Smith said that there has been a clear switch from significant deforestation pre-ETS to real investment in afforestation.

And that the price signal from the New Zealand ETS is also driving major change in new generation investment in a new wave of renewable energy.

I was particularly interested to note that in New Zealand, there were more renewable projects in the calendar year 2010 than any year previously.

[b]The striking thing about comments made to me about the ETS in New Zealand is that no one spoke about removing the scheme.[b]

In fact, discussion was mainly about expansion of carbon pricing. Business people accept the carbon price, and have incorporated it into their planning.

This conservative (National Party) New Zealand government accepts that a carbon price is good policy, and good for the country’s economy.

Of course, there are great differences between the New Zealand and Australian economies — New Zealand already generates more than 70 per cent of its energy from renewable sources, mostly hydro — but in other respects there are great similarities.

Both countries are developed, industrialised societies, and both need to make the transition to a low carbon economy.

New Zealanders rightly see that transition as an opportunity, not a burden.

Me.
I don’t deny his suffering. I feel truly sorry for all the families and loved ones.
Of course they want answers. But they need the truth, not wild speculation.

I’ve known people get eaten up with ‘finding the truth’ after tragedies when the truth has been quite simple.
It has ruined their lives, destroyed their marriages, become an obsession that never ends.

At least wait and see what the Royal Commission inquiry comes up with before promoting the bizarre conspiracy theories of anonymous authors with zero credibility.
Hopefully, the inquiry will come up with all the answers the families need.

A quick check says commissioners have until March 31 next year to deliver their findings.

If then you think those findings are a whitewash, feel free to whistleblow away.
But leave it till then, eh?

My request to “explain it” was tongue in cheek. My original post was in exasperation at the ever increasing bunch of talking heads in a suit who appear on every news show, every hour talking shite.

“The CPI has gone up because of the GST increase, petrol price increases and food price increases?” Really? Well that’s a relief, I thought it was the the Belgians who caused it.

So which school are you, Keynesian, Chicago, Stockholm? Maybe Lausanne? Surely nor Neo-Ricardianism?

In the late 1990s, the Fourth Reich, a Nazi skinhead gang, became a breeding ground for some of New Zealand’s most vicious killers.

Malcolm George Chaston, 41, was right at its heart.

Yesterday in the High Court in Rangiora, Chaston received one of the harshest sentences in New Zealand history, a life sentence with a minimum non-parole period of 20 years for murder, and a sentence of preventive detention for two sexual crimes. For his surviving victims, the sentence will provide some relief. But for Vanessa Pickering’s family it’s far too late.

Chaston’s criminal history is long and bloody.
