And Libya is a state where the majority religion is Muslim, but it is not an Islamic state. Dictators don’t tend to like religion taking precedence.

Also, I wasn’t quoting or misquoting or taking you out of context, earlier. It was a reference to a quote wrongly attributed to George Galloway. I guess you are a bit young for that, sorry.

Can’t we just agree to be on the same side, for once?

And I can tell you this, in the 70s and 80s I had my head down and arse up providing for a family and I hardly even noticed what was going here politically, let alone elsewhere. And, then, I quite liked Smith, in Rhodesia. He knew how to make a good cup of tea.

But funny how things change. My (now, not then) wife was amongst the protestors at the 1981 test I attended at Eden Park. I thought it was time apartheid ended but I still wanted to watch the footy.

I hope I wouldn’t make that mistake again.

I tell you one interesting thing, observing from overseas, is that when they interview people in CHCH on TV it seems about two thirds of the people have English accents.

You don’t think it had anything to do with international diplomatic wheels that were already rolling anyway indeed had started years beforehand and which paid no heed whatsoever to what was happening in some little country for a few weeks?

P.S. Luc as all the “colonial” regimes are dismantled and replaced by “indigenousness” ones, is this on balance proving to be less or more effective than when whitey was running them? Basic things like ports and transport and manufacturing and education and law and order and stuff like that. Is all of this working better in SA since 1990?

The end of tours between NZ and SA was a direct result of the awakening of NZers by the protests. As for the bigger question of ending apartheid, it was just a small cog in the wheel.

And too answer your last post, yes, it is better, because indigenous Africans are now accorded their human rights, as we take for granted for ourselves.

It’s up to them now. If you don’t like it, don’t go there.
