The reason the cops had to chase this guy is that they had to retreat the first time to their car to access their firearms and fill out all the forms, get radio permission to load them, check what theTreaty guidelines are, ensure that no wildlife might get disturbed in their habitat by gunfire and so on…. By which time the offender had driven away.

Bloody good shooting to hit him with a handgun the second time though after all that driving and chasing etc and the adrenalin which would have been involved.

Guess what…. there is now a homicide investigation! OK, it night be a formality, but FFS who would want to be cop in this country?

Actually, on a more serious note about firearms for the police….. the point of having the police force in the first place is to protect the PUBLIC from criminals. Obviously, we don’t want to have our police shot for humanitarian and organisational reasons etc, but the main point is that they should be there primarily to protect US, not the CRIMINALS.

This policy of not routinely arming the police is absolutely counter to their (presumed) function of protecting us from the criminals. During this car chase, for example, how many innocent citizens might have been hurt if the perp had lost control of his car? The permutations are unending of course….. but the point is that by not routinely arming the police we are actually not only making life more dangerous for them, but more importantly, we are making life more dangerous for the public and preventing the cops from doing the job that they are supposed to be doing on our behalf.

This so accurately describe Bradbury and co. I tend to blame it, as you have previously written, on the infiltration of the old left by over-educated university graduates armed with the theory but no practical experience of the working class who felt they had to take up the mantle but corrupted socialism with indigenous and minority rights issues.

The deal has left former owners John Butterfield and Ian Mackenzie well cashed up. It follows their sale last year of the Westpac Canterbury Centre for $30 million (a little more than two years after buying it for $18 million on a yield of around 9%).

The pair have been spending much of their time in Fiji where they own properties and boats, travelling, and in Mr Butterfield’s case, indulging in his helicopter flying hobby, collecting luxury cars and buying diamonds for his wife.

This afternoon a support flotilla of 20 yachts, kayaks, tinnys and tira waka escorted a group of four yachts heading to Whangaparāoa Bay by Cape Runaway on the East Cape of the North Island to join te Whānau-a-Apanui in their campaign to defend the coast from deep sea oil exploration.

Representatives of the iwi spoke, sang and gave a powerful haka to farewell and bless the flotilla. Leaders from Ngāti Porou, Ngāi Tai, Ngāpuhi and Ngāti Kahu announced they all stand behind the iwi in solidarity opposing deep sea oil drilling.

Whenever I read about hikoi and marches I always realise that I’m stuck inside at work on a sunny day. I’m sure that tin boats will not be the only tinnies being used on the water today.

Interesting comments about the idea of Earth Hour celebrated last week.

Why so grumpy about Earth Hour again this year? Because I don’t like being preached to about what I should be doing, especially when I already do it. For starters, in my house, we celebrate Earth Hour every day, like no doubt many of you do. How so? We don’t leave lights on in rooms that nobody is in, we don’t waste gas, we volunteer to clean up the riverwalk, and we plant trees because we like trees — not because we’ve fooled ourselves into believing that planting trees is our noble contribution towards helping make Al Gore’s mansions carbon-neutral.

As such, I tend to get a little put off when being preached to by hypocrites who swim in their own heated pools, travel in private jets, play sports under bright lights at night, heat cavernous homes they’re not even living in for months at a time, and ride in limo caravans to speeches where they tell the rest of us how our pickup trucks, lawn mowers, hamburgers and 75-watt light bulbs are killing the planet.

Here’s another reason I don’t participate in Earth Hour: I refuse to acknowledge, symbolically or otherwise, that electricity is the problem, and that civilisation can be saved by turning itself into North Korea for any length of time.

The harnessing and generation of electricity is among the greatest discoveries ever. It’s helped make the world safer and more sanitary. Electricity runs the equipment that is used to make the medicine that saves lives. It runs the cameras, televisions and computers that allow us to see evils that are being perpetuated around the world that we might not have otherwise known about — except in North Korea, where you can’t see crimes at night because Earth Hour is mandatory 365 days a year. We should be celebrating electricity instead of pretending it’s some sort of cancer that needs to be cut out of our lives.

The now completely marble-less Prince Charles has referred to a Mumbai slum, which pretty much endures the sacrifices of “Earth Hour” every second of every day, as a role model for sustainable living. I refuse to affirm that kind of lunacy, even symbolically for one hour per year.

Len Brown and his central planning friends must be thrilled to bits by Goff’s diversion of all political comment away from their “Auckland Unleashed” visions – which are actually visions of an Auckland constrained.

True to form, Aucklanders find themselves embroiled in a debate about how to pay for a few billion dollars worth of central core visions before anyone has come close to demonstrating there will be a need for any of them.

There is no good way to pay for something you do not need.

Auckland may grow but all the evidence from cities of the New World indicates most of the growth will take place in the suburbs, and that the central core will lose both population and jobs.

Christchurch can look forward to being NZ’s major urban economy in ten to twenty years. Auckland is on the path to self destruction because none of the politicians on Council seem to understand that people respond to prices.

Re shooting death at Fernhill Hawkes Bay. The first incident may have involved actions that could be open to different interpretations however the second was just inviting disaster.
Getting out of a vehicle in a rural area, presenting a shotgun at police who I assume were in a marked car with lights flashing, in a police district where the loss of Officer Len Slee is still a very raw memory makes suicide by police a reasonable scenario.
News reports that the dead man was
1 a good young man,
2 a person who had departed Christchurch following the quake, are just mischievous reporting on evidence that would be better kept for the various inquireys.
Yes his family and friends will be devastated at the tragedy but their best course of action would be to use his sensless death as a learning tool as the parents of the victims of youth drink drive related deaths seem to be increasingly doing.

If you are around, I am more than happy to take you up on the $50 bet you suggested last evening,( I have just read your comment), I am easy to find, click on me and its all there, address and name.

What I will say is presently there are at least 6 assaults a year concerning access already, but what really concerns me is that getting wound up over this bill is about the only way ACT can give themselves any sort of profile. They are as guilty of playing the race card as the drunken narccissistic dwarf, which is frankly showing how bare the ACT cupboard is.

It was frankly embarrassing watching the television where those inane attempts at changing the bill by Calvert were continually put to a party vote. It was nothing other than an inordinate waste of time.

If ACT are serious about being any sort of player in the next government one would have thought that members would be attempting to portray themselves as positive on issues.

For a party with a supposed business membership they have been very quite regarding actions moving on the re-construction of Christchurch for example. I would have thought with all the business brains they would have all the private sector contacts to make a big noise in the house with big ideas.

Instead we get ACT playing the race / fear card… you will have to pay for the beach, you’ll get assaulted by Maoris if you go to the beach. That shit is infantile and no better than NZF wanking on about Asians.

And dear me couldn’t our economy do with some money from off shore investing in NZ at the moment…

After watching TV news tonight i despair that New Zealand is the country most f**ked
up on earth by political correctness.

But TV News tonight is fixated on one aspect, “Who fired first ?” FFS
If we live in a country where you can point a shotgun at a police officer and then have the PC
handringers thinking this is kind of like , who threw the first punch in a barroom brawl , is there any
hope ?
i’ll spell it out for the PC brigade. Point any weapon at a police officer, for any reason whatever
and you will be shot.
i dont give a s**t how many shots the police fired at this person.

TVNZ and 3 are doing the citizens of NZ a sick dissevice by even worrying about who shot first
let alone making that the major issue in their coverage.

Manolo, I remember a year, two years ago, a few days after Earf Hour the media will dutifully tell everyone how much power the good little sacrifices saved by replacing efficient lightbulbs with CO2 spewing candles, and even then it was meaningless. Where has this triumphalism been this year? Come on journalists, be good little Greenpeace supporters and tell me.

And speaking of eco-totalitarian supporting journalists, it’s funny how the Hooeruld had RADIATION 10 MILLION TIMES HIGHER THAN NORMAL AT FUKUSHIMA plastered over their front page today, a good twelve hours after Tepco stated that that figure was misread and wrong. This incident firmly displays boths the obsolescence of newspapers in reporting continually changing situations like that at Fukushima and the inate ideological bias in the old media which people are becoming more aware of and rejecting at an increasing pace.

What we need are videos in the car.

That would answer questions like this, cause we don’t know, what his demenour was nor what his actions were, and apparently, no-one but police saw it.

That doesn’t mean the police will say anything other than the facts and hold nothing back, it simply means it would be better if we had 3rd party evidence of some sort.

And we could, possibly, if we had that. Yes, I know the video might have been pointing away. I know some might allege were it there, the video was altered. Etc.

It’s just another tool, could be easily done.

This is not the first time Ms Bennett has been the target of recorded criticisms. In 2009, when Grey Power first met the incoming ministers, she was described as needing to “shape up her obligations”.

“It appears she thinks a loud laugh will solve all questions put to her and this meeting was a complete waste of her time. Well, it certainly was a waste of ours,” the Grey Power notes said.

From V2’s link, where Grey Power relates another occasion where Bennett’s skillset came into play.

It’s never a good idea is it, to do what she did on both occasions in the way she did it. If she had to say: “the taskforce needs to take a backseat since ChCh happened,” why not say that? Why get all rambunctious? I’ve always wondered if Bennett has the finesse to get further on her own merits, since she’s ridden Key’s shirttails all her career. When he goes, will be her test. I’m not sure she’ll do all that well, quite frankly.

Just thinking about name suppression and found out the name of the comedian on the web very easily. Mentioned this to my teenager who rolled her eyes and said everyone knows this already. Young and immature people who watch his progress and who are interested in such crap programs already have the ability to web search and find information that appeals to them. RadioLeftWing in my own personal hallucination has improved remarkably in balance esp since the appointment of Mercep to Morning Report.

Granted he’s no Hooton or Whale but I think Coleman might have been busy behind the scenes from that appt and also the editorial lines.

IF we privatise RNZ we lose advert-free astute news. Are you really saying you don’t get annoyed by Live’s and ZB’s incessant irritating and uninformative ad breaks.

Personally I’m happy to pay a few cents now and then for what we get, from RNZ. What I’m not happy about is the beholden to political winds phenomena which we continually witness and it’s a bedeviling question as to how one avoids that while using public money.

But I’m not happy to throw it away.

Roger douglas undertook a “Blitzkrieg” approach to privatisation, so that the next National Government couldn’t reverse the changes. The thing is,the New Zealand public has never voted for privatisation. In 1987 Labour didn’t campaign for it and niether did National in 1990. In 1993 National got 35% of the vote. Hardly a popular mandate for radical reform. Then in 1996 Winston stabbed his constituents in the back by going with National. You see – people just don’t want privatisation. They want to retain good public services, because they work well, and generally speaking, you don’t sell of capital to pay down debt, unless the situation is dire. It’s a dumb move.

unreal sure makes some cogent arguments hey? The public service provider model certainly has its wastages in lost efficiencies, but so many services should not be bottom-line oriented, because it defeats the purpose they were originally put there. i.e. to serve the voting public, who voted for them in the first place, and who have never voted to have them sold off. But yes i know. Privatisers don’t care much for democracy.

I agree, I felt two things watching the TVNZ reporting of it.

1. Sick.

2. How ridiculous TVNZ is. Is it a reflection of modern day Kiwi society?

A guy is waving a shot-gun around in public.

He gets shot, oh gee, surprise, surprise, at least the cops stopped him before he killed innocent civilians.

Cops, get it? The good guys. The protectors. The guys who risked their lives to help save others. You know like the guys who got shot here:
