Those sucked in by the Ken Ring quackery should read what he says, try this: An Inexact Science
(except that it’s not science)

Really weather is an opinion-based product based on best-guessing, from blending available information into experience, just like economics or political science.

Really, Ring admits he is selling his “opinions” – he often stresses they are only opinions unless one happens to coincide with what has happened, then he calls it a successful prediction.

So if a forecast says rain for Auckland but it only rains in Huntly, 60 miles away, given the tools available it is as close as one can reasonably get, and should therefore be considered a successful forecast.

Even when he gets it wrong he claims success.

Most weather readings, averages etc are taken at airports. Airports are usually windier, which the planes need to be able to take off with, and then land again safely, and being windier are therefore drier places than hills or nearby towns. Unless your location is at or near the airport the forecast may be at least slightly (and possibly way) out.

He suggests if you don’t live near an airport he can’t be relied on anyway??

When calculating weather from the Moon I am looking for repeatable Moon factors.

But it’s all done by precise calculation and patterns?

The hammer manufacturer cannot be blamed for your bruised thumb. If an inaccurate forecast is given, that does not invalidate the moon method but might just mean this author is still learning.

Except he may not have learnt how to do it properly yet.

To that extent any rigorous scientific assessment of any method is just not viable. There are simply too many variables for the scientific method to be applied.

And admits it isn’t science?

About the only legacy we seem to be leaving future generations at the moment is that weather is bizarre, unfriendly, unpredictable, and because of that we must pay extra taxes for boneheaded scientists to endlessly research it, under the label of ‘climate change’.

His target market is the ‘climate change’ deniers? He must at least know the difference between climate and weather.

I ask that we bring back the weather wisdom of the Moon, learn and apply it for ourselves and for our livelihoods, and teach it to our children. We can at least leave them that. Let us teach them that the Moon comes in cycles and as does the tide so does the weather, and these cycles can be quantified. It is not perfect and no one has all the answers, but we can use the Moon’s cycles to make useful predictions as to trends.

He emphasises how vague and imprecise his ‘opinion’ methods are, while he keeps quoting specific weather (and now earthquake) events as proof of his calculations. But…

We should not expect too much. As good and effective as any method is, it is our responsibility to also plan for alternative outcomes.

The best alternative outcome may be to ignore his snake oil. He may believe in what the “opinions” he sells, but Ring is a ding-a-ling.

Gee Pete are you leading the charge against this guy, because you seem a wee bit evangelical in your opposition. From where I sit he seems to have as much credibility as anyone else.

While I am ranting I am getting a bit sick of the disaster porn on tv. I have friends in Christchurch who just want to get on with things and the media’s thirst for a story is just getting too much.

Geoff Robinson on Morning Report this morning said that the rise in ‘domestic incidents’ was ‘understandable’.

Perhaps we women should be told when being beaten up by our partners is understandable. Is it only in time of earthquake?

Will the judges agree bashing partners is understandable and let the thugs off?

We (as in my family) followed Ken Ring’s forecasts for 2010. I make no claim that it was a scientific study but we noted that although his day to day forecasts were on a par with readings from chicken entrails the long term predictions were surprisingly accurate. For such things as resowing paddocks & working out stocking rates I would rate his forecasts on an equal with any qualified meteorologist……for picking a day at the beach no way.

Just my two bobs worth.

Naaska, short term forecasts done by meteorologists are far more accurate than longer term forecasts.

Longer term forecasts become much more of a lottery with general timeframes and conditions, so meteorologists, Ken Ring and throwing a dart at a weather map will be closer in accuracy – and it’s easy to pick bits out that fit if you want to believe, and see the inaccuracies if you look more closely.

For picking the day of a major quake, no way too? So what’s the point? We know there will always be quakes around New Zealand, and some will be large ones, occasionally near larger populations, but we have no idea where or when or what damage will occur. We can buy raincoats, we can have emergency kits, but we won’t know when we’ll need to use them in the future.

BeaB/dime – you must always cut “Geriatric Geoff” a bit of slack. He oftens gets a little confused on Morning Report (confusing “million” with “billion” etc), but if you persevere, you can usually get the drift of what he is trying to say.

Edit – having said that, he was supposed to be pensioned off a year or two back (don’t know why that didn’t happen).

Agreed that short term forecasts are always more accurate…. the further out you get the more variables come into play. In this respect meteorology can be compared to a game of chess. Although I’m certainly not promoting Ken Ring’s day to day forecasts it must be fairly stated that he is making them at least a year out. In most things unproven I’m a world class sceptic but I admit to a grudging respect for his long term predictions….at least for now.

The earthquake predictions even if proved reliable would be so vague as to intensity & position as to be worthless.

Since the sisterhood redefined the phrase “domestic violence” to included yelling, threatening, throwing articles around & anything else that suits their intent of demonising men we have no guarantee that Geoff Robinson’s witterings were about actual assaults.

It would be fair to say that men do not have a monopoly on screaming or yelling & acting irrationally under pressure isn’t exactly unusual female behaviour.

His comments seem to do little other than move air around.

nasska It was in the context of a police report on actual arrests. The police officer also said he considered the incidents ‘understandable’.

As adze suggested, a better word would have been ‘predictable’ and the fact that they didn’t use it may or may not signal their attitudes towards domestic violence. I hope not.

Don’t get your knickers in a twist about the sisterhood. We are your mums, wives, sisters and daughters. You might like to think about how you want them to be treated by their partners and whether you would excuse “yelling, threatening, throwing articles around”, much less using fists.

My husband says violence is never ever understandable, acceptable or excusable in any circumstances at all. I agree.

The great thing is disasters bring out the best in most people and that is overwhelmingly what we are seeing.

Exactly Pete. The max they can predict accurately is about 4 days. After that the variables become too complex. This complexity lead to what is called the Butterfly Effect (which way will a butterfy fly?) and the development of Chaos Theory.
Long term they have no show. Witness the Met Service in the UK who predicted a warm Christmas for the UK and ended up with the worst weather in decades. So much for their new 170 million pound super computer. Or was that the warmists view coming through…

I agree nasska, the term domestic violence should be held in quotation marks and called by its real name; assault or grievous bodily harm or kidnapping, or torture, or murder as each case suggests.

However when your bloke raises his voice to his wife after “training” her with the jug cord I can see that as part of “domestic violence”.

On predicting weather – It was analysed that you would be right more often than the met service with tomorrow’s forecast if you simply said “same as today”

On “understandable” perhaps he is an experienced police officer and understands the way the minds work in a section of the population in the same way as you might say that teenage driving accidents are “understandable” especially as more is learnt about teenage brain development . You will note that he did not say “excusable” so lets not spend the week on semantics and accept that there is a lot of tension in the air and understand that people in Christchurch are pretty fragile as they try to hold it all together and appear relaxed and calm.

My comment was intended to argue that the hijacking of the English language by single issue groups has rendered many previously useful words & phrases to meaningless tripe. Bashing a woman around is & always should be inexcusable but the phrase “domestic incidents” is so wide as to easily include a heated argument or any form of unresolved disagreement.

I have just had a quick look at the different political party websites in NZ

Act has a large link to the Earthquake appeal.

The Nats, Labour, the greens and the Maori party all have messages of support for the victims of the earthquake with links to red cross or similar donation options. The Maori party has alist of marae that are available for emergency accommodation.

The progessives have as a lead item, an article outlining Andertons victory over a DB ad that has been deemed untrue.

I suspect John Campbell (and his producers) as gatekeepers for the powers that were, had a wee bit of a dilemma when it came to Ken Ring.

Evidently Campbells viewers were wanting to hear from Ken. If they didn’t have him on, people would be wondering why not.

If they did have him on, would people listen and become curious and start investigating for themselves, maybe spend some time reading Ken’s website?

What might they find there? Hmmm could it be an alternative view points to the Government and Campbells man made global warming position?

The poor wee lambs might be exposed to different ideas to the approved establishment viewpoint which both the Government and Campbell are heavily invested in.

Ken Ring is Kryptonite to the man made global warming paradigm. His theory must not be allowed to gain any traction.
People must not have reason to question authority.

Mr Ring may not have the right Uni degrees, but his livelihood depends on there being value in the information he present. The same cannot be said for the Wonks with the tax payer funded guaranteed Government paycheck.

The monopoly on information is challenged and Campbell becomes belligerant.

Oh what a show!

It is quite common for a large earthquake to be followed up by aftershocks including a quake pretty large (usually one notch less on the scale.) This has just happened . The earthquake gurus reckon there is a 25% chance of another biggy within 6 months . Is this a forecast ? or just noting what has happened in the past .
My ol dad told me that his family had a brilliant forecaster in the form of a cut out wooden donkey nailed to the garden shed. It had a bit of rope for its tail and the sign underneath said –1: If tail dry… weather fine 2: If tail wet ….Raining and
3: If tail falls out …earthquake !

What is interesting about this Ken Ring fulla is the parallel to plate tectonics theory.
The fellow who came up with the idea of plate tectonics was routinely mocked and ridiculed for decades by the pompous scientific establishment.
They to cried: he is not qualified! , they mocked and hissed and poked fun in the most humiliating of ways.

Just watched UFC 127, great to see a big heavy handed Samoan Mark Hunt and veteran K1 fighter get a huge knockout and oh yeah I think there was a Maori guy in there, kind of got his ass kicked…by a Swedish guy.

Sort of reminds me of the Tua versus…what’s his name, Maori guy, curly white hair?

Why can’t Maoris fight when it counts?

The problem is Shunda, there’s a possibility the Alpine Fault could go at any time. I’d rather have a pragmatic idea of possibilities rather than an endless prediction of dates until Ring “gets one right”.

For the earthquake last week Ring predicted “on the Ring of Fire, possibly somewhere within 500km of the Alpine fault”. And he still got the days wrong.

This is exactly what Ring said on 14th Feb:

The 7+ is sure to be somewhere in the “Ring of Fire”, where 80% of all major earthquakes seem to occur, and NZ is at the lower left of this Ring. The range of risk may be within 500kms of the Alpine Fault.

Right about location (half the world), wrong about the day and the size. Three paragraphs later he said:

The risk is no greater than it has always been in NZ; after all they call us The Shaky Isles.

Is that enough certainty?

Domestic violence has not only been re-defined to include yelling and kicking the cat, but also to exclude any such similar behaviour and indeed physical assault, by women. That entitles the otherwise quite incorrect presumption by the sisterhood that only men engage in “domestic violence” and women are always the victims.

While I stand by my 10.55am comment that bashing women is inexcusable both MT_Tinman & thedavincimode have correctly pointed out that man beats woman is not the only version of domestic violence. A short stroll along the High St of my local town reveals some horrible sights. The classic example of “Jake the Muss & his poor cowering wife” is given the lie by the sheer number of women with a fighting weight of 250lb & more. Many of the bad tempered bitches show by the way they ill treat their kids that they are certainly not averse to dishing out violence.

In many cases their personal lives are probably full of endless confrontation. In any war truth is the first casualty & there are enough man haters out there to make sure that no opportunity to blame their enemy is wasted justified or not.

They do the genuine victims a great disservice.

Do you actually think spousal abuse by women is funny? Is it funny that some men are physically attacked and harmed and that they put up with it because they have nowhere else to go and are concerned about their kids? That despite being physically more powerful, they don’t actually want to retaliate by smashing the shit out of their partners? That this might all happen in front of their children? Is that being a pussy? You clearly think so. Maybe its the combination of a lack of judgement, will and options. But whatever, its certainly self-restraint. Of course, if there is a response in kind, then that’s a different matter isn’t it …

REDEYE///No first I acknowleged the generosity of a man I reviled as supporting the oppression of the Socialism in New Zealand while benefiting and enjoying life as a result of his capitalistic labours and dwelling in a state relying on capitalism. Others on the list have been leaders and examples within our nation and have not been shy in sponsoring racing, building golfcourses and sponsoring tournaments
establishing property empires etc and the thought occurred to me that perhaps they wouldn’t be too bashful about emulating the example of Glen as motivation to the rest of us.

Here is an idea.

Given the power that blog sites now have to shape opinion and political direction.
Given that this one is well read by many. ( thank you David) even if not all post a comment.
What about a thread to introduce and kick around ideas with the one proviso that they are only
positive suggestions for the development of New Zealand.
For eg, headed, “If I were the dictator of New Zealand, i would….”
i bet plenty of readers of this blog have good ideas. They could express them and maybe the
powers that be might pick some of them up, see votes and merit in some of them And help develop
our great country.

For what it is worth, i will give it a go.
Tomorrow AM on the general debate i will stick my kneck out .

For the good of New Zealand, “If i were the dictator of the country i would……..”

Good idea ? Crap idea ? What do you think?

On TV ONE News tonight. Guyon Espiner speculating on what government programs might – or might not – be cut as a result of the Christchurch Earthquake. All he could say: “I think! I think! I think!” Well, we think he was totally unthinking. His comments are unnecessary – totally unnecessary – untimely and absolutely disgraceful.

I note that English has said that “Nothing is off the table” when it comes to working out how we are going to pay for the Christchurch rebuild.
When questioned further English replied that WFF, interest free student loans and tax increases were all options they were looking at.

Another area they MUST look at is the Rugby world cup, while I would love to see the Govt and the NZRU tell the IRB to stick their cup up their collective backsides the reality is that Key will never do that, what he should do however is tell the NZRU and the IRB that the tax payer is not going to cover any of the losses.

If the NZRU still wants the RWC in NZ then they cannot expect us to pay for their party, if there is a loss then so be it, the IRB and the NZRU can cover that loss.

The tax payer has far more important things to be doing with their money.

If the NZRU still wants the RWC in NZ then they cannot expect us to pay for their party, if there is a loss then so be it, the IRB and the NZRU can cover that loss.

No way the RWC is going BB. It’s the perfect pick-me-up. No way also is it going to make a loss.

Goff was on Wilson’s radio show this evening saying he didn’t think it was a very good idea putting “popular” policies on the table using these times as an excuse although he acknowledged everything re: ChCh was non-partisan.

Yeh right. Like Liarbore wouldn’t campaign in 2014 for a restoration of their Hulun-given us-funded dual life-lines since ChCh was now “under control?”

It’s the “us-funded” bit I have the issue with. I generally on-balance really like interest-free student loans and WFF for the wealthy and think they’re wonderful, fluffy policies, full of goodness and light in every way.

Right from day one the Labour and National governments have said the RWC WILL run at a loss, that is not in dispute.

Both Labour and National have agreed that we (the tax payer) will cough up around $52 million to help cover that loss, this is after we have built a new stadium for the NZRU’s piss up and spent around $700m.

I do not object to the RWC coming to NZ, I like the game of Rugby, what I object to doing is paying for the NZRU’s party when they are the ones who should be covering the total cost of the tournament and any losses.

It is interesting that private enterprise alone will fix CHCH…yet the lefties must be rejoicing at employers and providers i.e “rich pricks” going to the wall…that’ll teach em.

Anyway, I was thinking about getting a masters cricket tournament going next year Dime, I want to invite teams from around the world, it should be a great time.

Just one thing though Dime, I want you to pay for it, the travel, the piss up, the hookers and the cost of running the games.

How many rugby fans were highly pissed off that the tax payer funded a couple of America’s cup campaigns?

I am surprised not to read anything from DPF on the Irish General Election. Very surprising since the centre right Fine Gael Party won the most seats gaining 25 seats to reach 76 seats.

There were also gains on the left with likely coalition partner Labour picking up 37 seats (up from 20). Gerry Adams is among 14 Sinn Féin members of the Dáil up from 4 in 2007. Also the new group called the United Left Alliance gaining 5 seats.

Needless to say the former government did badly. The junior partner Green lost all 6 seats while the senior partner (free market) Fianna Fáil lost 57 seats down to 20 (lowest in their history)

Yep, I always follow the cricket……. the NZC are not what one could call arrogant, they are however inept.

That is surprising given the intelligence of the CEO, the good Dr Vaughan is a very smart cookie, the same cannot be said for Teflon Tew at the NZRU, who is, at best, a bumbling fool.

At last count the NZRU had over 100 people at head office (suitably placed on the Wellington waterfront for that sinking feeling they will eventually have when reality smacks them straight in the face)
What do all those people do?, they do not raise any money as the game is losing money hand over fist every year, they sure as hell are not working on boosting the crowds as those numbers are embarrassingly low.

Nope, I suspect that each and every one of the morons is working out another way to stiff their stupidly loyal fans out of some more of their hard earned cash.

Remember Nookin, these are the fuck wits who think they own the silver fern, these are the people who I contacted way back in September with the suggestion of an earthquake relief game between the mighty Wellington team and the Canterbury team, I suggested that the NZRU might like to let the Cantab fans in for free given that they had been through such a terrible time…….the reply I got from Teflon Tew was nothing short of disgusting.

Thankfully the same email to the CEO of the Canterbury rugby union elicited a more mature and reasoned response.

The reality is Nookin that the CEO of the NZRU and NZC cannot do a lot about what happens on the field, you cannot blame Dr Vaughan for the teams piss poor results, what you want your CEO to do is get it right off the field, on that score both the NZRU and NZC have royally fucked up.

I am certainly inclined to agree with you about Tew. I am not sure whether I have the same confidence in the good doctor. I have the feeling that he has bowed to to player pressure. For example, when they were appointing a new coach, he announced that the criteria for selection was an ability to get on with Dan. Last year, he interfered with the selection of the 20/ 20 team when McCullum threw his toys out of the cot. Something is seriously wrong with the culture. I do not pretend that I have the answers. I do not see Justin Vaughan as one of them..

Maori board rejects mayor’s plea to negotiate out of court

Mayor Len Brown has failed to stop the Maori Statutory Board going to court to overturn an Auckland Council decision to slash its budget.

The board has rejected Mr Brown’s desire for a negotiated settlement by filing a statement of claim in the High Court at Auckland yesterday asking the court to uphold a $3.4 million budget approved by the council’s strategy and finance committee on February 8.

Faced with a public uproar at the cost of running the board, the unelected members of which are able to sit and vote on 11 council committees, the council voted at a full council meeting on February 15 to reduce the budget to $1.9 million. It also cut the board’s budget for the rest of the financial year from $2,060,000 to $950,000.

Last week, Mr Brown called on the board to give up its court action and work with a group of three councillors to sort out the budget row without involving lawyers.

The board has rejected a negotiated settlement and yesterday chairman David Taipari said the litigation was about seeking “clarification, not confrontation” while continuing to operate constructively and in good faith with the council.

Finance Minister Bill English signalled a major review of spending plans and debt levels yesterday, including possible cuts to Working for Families payments and interest-free student loans.

“We are just not ruling stuff in or out. We are in day six,” he said. Mr English said in terms of income support the Government would continue to “protect the vulnerable” – a likely signal that cuts to Working for Families would be limited to those on high incomes. A highly placed Government source said advice from the Treasury included the option of a higher abatement rate on Working for Families payments, meaning those on higher incomes would receive less.

More than agree. Vaughan seems completely ineffectual and vacillates between trying to keep everyone happy and trying to appear authoritive and in control. It strikes me that the problem at the moment is a leadership vacuum that starts at the top and finishes on the field. Vettori is a fantastic player but one just gets the impression that he isn’t prepared to back himself against other strong personalities in that team – we know who they are. Several give the appearance of people who really only want to do their own thing. There is no other way to explain the fact that some of them – like the former wicketkeeper, have all the talent in the world but simply no capacity to temper raw talent with self-discipline. God knows who will captain in place of Vettori. The present form and attitude of the two most likely candidates raises issues about whether they should even be in the team. Those personality types can be very disruptive in a team environment – you can in fact be better off without them.
