So, John Key says they will lay criminal charges if they find problems in the buildings which collapsed during the Christchurch earthquake.

I wonder, if he will go and similarly lay criminal charges against those who were ultimately reponsible for the leaky buildings crisis (which has caused suicides, family breakups, bankruptcies). The government is ultimately responsible for the leaky buildings, followed by the councils .

I would love to see criminal charges against those who made changes to the building act.

Your closed-mind use of the Japanese nuclear energy emergency to further banish, as was Helen’s policy, utterly any contemplation of nuclear power here in New Zealand is Neanderthal – the lesson for future consideration is that you don’t build such facilities where tsunami can reach them.

And your damning of John Key’s earlier ‘shock’ mention of 10,00 Christchurch houses lost, is only now compounded by your criticism of the Government now not acting immediately to prepare temporary replacement of 10,000 houses.

Then your elimination of Harawira from any post-Election partnership seems to fly in the face of the actual evidence Peters has historically provided, that should also eliminate him on similar grounds.

Three strikes in one ‘interview’ – except in TVNZ tradition it was hardly an interview, just the occasional prompt for you to fuck it up all by yourself more or less, Phil.

The first thing we were taught as volunteers on the Kibbutz was security, missile drill and what to do if terrorists get loose within the compound.
One volunteer asked why soldiers where only on the main gates at night but there were always soldiers around the pre-schoolers area.
We were told of a Kibbutz just up the road called Mallot.

You see Arab terrorists think it is a great victory to target and machine gun pre-schoolers. They are celebrated as heroes when they do.

There were no liberals amongst the volunteers after hearing that, even though most came from Europe, Scandinavia in particular.

They have huge and scary looking pipes spewing out steam (apparently).

I do it every Tuesday.

Fortunately, no earthquakes here, much.

Touch wood.

Makes you wonder though.

More pandering to the racists acting as tobacco-nazis:

The government has committed to a goal of New Zealand becoming smokefree by 2025.

Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia today released the government’s response to the recommendations of the Maori Affairs Committee Report into the effects of tobacco use among Maori.

As well as a committment to making New Zealand smokefree by 2025, the government will look into law changes around the promotion, packaging and display of tobacco products. It will also investigate regulating the use of additives and nicotine levels in tobacco products.

Turia said it was a landmark moment in New Zealand. “It is about us asserting our own identity as a nation and defining for ourselves the role tobacco is allowed to play in the life of this country – this is not something we are just going to leave in the hands of the tobacco industry,” she said.

If the Nuclear plants just went ‘boom’ every now and then without residual toxic fallout I think you will find most people would become pretty balze’.
They can cope with that sort of risk.
But an insidious invisible harbinger of death instills a deep negative emotion long ago instilled into most humans psyche.
That ain’t going to change anytime soon. As long as nothing happens around Nuclear plants after a time the populous manages to place these deep fears at the back of their minds.
Events like this bring it all back.

Lance – Bobbie is being irrational. What the Japanese experience shows us is that even following one of the strongest recorded earthquakes and a monster tsunami, the inherent safety of the stations’ design gives plenty of time to get out of the way if something does start to go wrong.

I’m a pom and I used to go to Southwold on holiday, just down the coast from the Sizewell stations.

I go along with Lance on this one. The human psyche has a fear of anything it can’t see & therefore rationalise. There is a whole industry of religion dating back thousands of years that has been built on that human failing. But come on it will be as funny as fuck if Hone ends up holding the balance of power, now will both Labour and the Nats refuse to go into negotiations with him ?
Both the Maori party and the Nats are utter utter fools in believing that second class land titles for the suntanned is a goer, it would have been far better to throw that one back to the law lords in London as a one off to decide.
And yes it is pretty bloody sad that a lot of Maori trust the Law Lords more than NZ judges, but it is not without reason.

He proclaimed a commitment to peace in the Middle East, but Israeli stubbornness, endorsed by much of Congress, has confounded him. He has had to eat his own campaign words and keep open the Guantanamo Bay detention centre for terrorist suspects.

Though Obama sometimes rises to extraordinary heights of rhetoric, as he did after January’s Arizona shootings in which six people were killed and congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords was shot in the head by a lone gunman, he is getting little of substance done.

From the media obsession with the nuclear power plants one would think 10,000 people died from radiation rather than the earthquake. As far as I can tell the death toll from the power plants is zero. How many died in the refinery fire?

For those of you (like me) that are assuming that the nuclear situation in Japan is a catastrophe (or at least a serious problem) there is a very good explanation written by a nuclear physicist friend of an Australian in Japan to allay the fears of the Australian’s family.

It cleared up a lot for me anyway and makes me think they did a pretty good job

If you read the Dom-Post you will have seen the frontpage headline in this morning’s paper
“At least 10,000 feared dead as nuclear crisis worsens”.
The same edition, on page A2 also talks about the NZ search and rescue team being only 130km from a nuclear power station but that we don’t have to worry because they are trained in monitoring radiation exposure and “We have protective suits and respirators with us”
As far as the media is concerned its ALL a nuclear story, even if the deaths are the result of the tsunami. We can only assume that if there were no nuclear power stations in Japan there would have been no damage or deaths at all.

I get heartily sick of the gratuitous pontificating of these crooks and charlatans in parliament, especially of the self important manner in which they speak. A timely example is the patently obvious posturing from the vainglorious power drunk Associate Health Minister Tariana Turia, who launches yet another tax payer funded attack on freedom of choice with her offensive against smoking.

What will do the most for this country is if self serving do-gooders like you just left people alone Tariana, instead of projecting the idea that nothing can be done unless there is some government program to foster it and some tax payer money to enable it.

We need a nation of independent citizens, not nanny state ninnies.

Japan has a reputation of hiding the truth. Newest reports have the radiation levels now a a level high enough to do damage out the health of those near by, and in all likelihood, no current control over future increases of radiation leaks. The weather is changing for the worse, and radiation is going to rain from the skies. And you seriously wouldn’t be concerned?

This is not a joke for those families living in the area and the strong suspicion is that the government just wants to avoid the mess of a mass flight. Most people, though, are trapped by lack of fuel – powerless to help themselves.

And, Japan faces at least a generations-long job of dismantling these reactors.

Already have, Puke. For fifteen years I lived fourteen kilometres away from a nuclear power plant. They really aren’t that bad.

Worst case scenario, three reactors will meltdown, they’ll be a big gloopy mess at the bottom of the containment vessel and…that’s it. The biggest problems will be the financial headache TEPCO will have in disposal and the infrastructural headache the Japanese government will have in maintaining reliable electricity supplies as the recovery goes on for the next weeks, months and years. When the death toll balloons exponentially over the next few days (something the media is reprehensibly ignoring in favour of ARGGGGGGGGGGGH THE NUCLEAR THREAT) none will be from radiation poisoning.

In fact, I would rather be next to Fukushima than that dam that failed not too far from it, which destroyed 1,800 homes. Similar dams also help provide renewable hydroelectric power.

Just saying.

“VIENNA, March 15 (Reuters) – Japan has told the U.N. nuclear watchdog a spent fuel storage pond was on fire at an earthquake-stricken reactor and radioactivity was being released “directly” into the atmosphere, the Vienna-based agency said.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), citing information it had received from Japanese authorities, said dose rates of up to 400 millisievert per hour have been reported at the Fukushima power plant site.

“The Japanese authorities are saying that there is a possibility that the fire was caused by a hydrogen explosion,” it said in a statement.”

Do we really need a large population in New Zealand? Some groups such as the Property Council are lobbying for a larger population while warning that we are in danger of outstripping our energy supply.

A long, long time ago…
I can still remember
How that benefit used to make me smile.
And I knew if I held a grudge
That I could make those people bludge
And, maybe, they’d be happy for a while.

But February made me shiver
With every policy paper the Nats did deliver.
Bad news on the doorstep;
I couldn’t take one more dpb cheque.

How this bumbling fool got elected? Desperation on the American voters, I guess. That great country certainly jumped from the pan to the raging fire.

The Messiah is indolent, lazy, and finds himself completely out of his depth as president.

The Middle East is afire with rebellion, Japan is imploding from an earthquake, and the battle of the budget is on in the United States, but none of this seems to be deterring President Obama from a heavy schedule of childish distractions.

This morning, as Japan’s nuclear crisis enters a potentially catastrophic phase, we are told that Obama is videotaping his NCAA tournament picks and that we’ll be able to tune into ESPN Wednesday to find out who he likes.

Saturday, he made his 61st outing to the golf course as president, and got back to the White House with just enough time for a quick shower before heading out to party with Washington’s elite journalists at the annual Gridiron Dinner.

With various urgencies swirling about him, Saturday’s weekly videotaped presidential address focusing on “Women’s History Month” seemed bizarrely out of touch.

Obama Friday took time out to honor the 2009-10 Stanley Cup Champion Chicago Blackhawks. Thursday was a White House conference on bullying – not a bad idea perhaps, but not quite Leader of the Free World stuff either.

Manolo I agree totally..He is certainly a poor excuse for a President! I recall upsetting a few ‘Obama-ites’ at work in the days subsequent to his election…I was certainly willing to give the guy a chance but I upset a number of his followers because I openly exclaimed that I simply didn’t buy into this “Messiah” thing. One thing I couldn’t understand was the belief of his drooling followers that the world would all of a sudden become a ‘Happy-Smiley’ place with no wars or bloodshed simply because the Americans had elected a President of a certain skin-colour! It was almost like some kind of cult had invaded their minds! Needless to say I got accused of being a racist! The silence is deafening now when I point out that the World is as bigger mess now as it always has been..
