Dunedin man dies after McDonald’s assault

The 51-year-old died in Dunedin Hospital on Saturday night, after an incident in the George St restaurant at 4.45am.

The Otago Daily Times understands the man had finished shift work and was waiting in a queue for food when an altercation broke out between several people, and he was mistakenly punched by the alleged offender.

Too many people, mostly young males, use getting pissed as an excuse for being thugs. They usually don’t act in isolation, they have both tacit and active support of “friends”.

One seemingly innocent man dead.
Probably a family and acquantances severely affected.
The thug’s life is now in tatters as well, this will also likely affect family.

The sad thing is this stupidity will probably continue.

The only red for me is that of Manchester United

The March issue of the British GQ magazine has Piers Morgan interviewing British Labour Party leader Ed Miliband. It’s a Hilarious read and Piers really rips into Ed for pretty much shafting his brother who was the likely choice to become leader. I liked this,

PM, What do you stand for? Nobody seems to know.

EM, “What gets me out of bed in the morning is that lots of British people have their hopes and aspirations frustrated. They face huge barriers getting the education they want, spending the time with their family they want, having safer communities. I want to help those people. We’re still too unequal as a society. There’s still too big a gap between the rich and the poor”

Jeez that’s a load of nothing. Piers rips into Miliband for living in sin in this partner’s one million pound house with their children. You can’t stand for family values when you’re living like that. Also Miliband and the other two leaders are all middle class public school education men. Labour in England no longer represents the trade unionist, all they represent are middle class liberals. A bit like in New Zealand really. In the entire interview Ed never shows any side of having a personality. He’s afraid to brandish any opinion in case it looses him a vote or offends people.

I’ve never really taken much notice of Peirs Morgan, but this interview was funny. I’ll have to read more of him.

My plan for Christchurch’s involvement in the Rugby World Cup: Hagley Park should be set up as the feeding and watering hole. Lots of temporary bars, restaurants, big screens, kids’ play areas. Everyone will feel safe in light weight structures and outside.

Then, turn the negative into a positive. A back to grass roots campaign, like rugby tours of old. All tourists will be billeted, free, by local families. They will get to experience Kiwi life, food, interfere with their children when arriving back from town at 3am. Vomit on the cat and crap the bed.

There aren’t that many overseas tourists and they all will be flying solo. The other option is to hand out strong ecstasy at the airport and explain to people that there will be no need for a bed.

Bulletin No.1 to Kiwibloggards:

On the recommendation of my team here in New York, I’ve decided to start a regular post to Kiwiblog. The team says it’s a way of reaching out to the midddle voters. I invited DPF’s bloggards to comment on my post so I can get a feeling for the best message I can pitch to them in subsequent bulletins.

First I want to congratulate the Labour MPs for the good work they are doing in eastern Christchurch, especially on TVNZ. Lieanne Dalziel, Lord Burns, and Clay Cuzzygrove are putting their mouths where there brains ought to be. However, I would urge them to keep the multicultural message to the fore. They should emphasise the importance of having more Somalis and other Africans in New Zealand. Whoever heard of a big earthquake in Africa. Darkening up the NZ populace is a matter of civil defence. The fact that they would be future Labour voters is irrelevant.

Second, to help with fund raising to help those hurt by the Christchurch earthquake, I am prepared to offer a series of signed earthquake drawings — if someone can get them over to me, of course.

The quake has brought down many Christchurch statues. This creates an opportunity for new statues. It would be fine if more statues of women were put up in the Garden City. I can think only of the one of the woman (I forget her name) who won the vote for NZ women. Now, as many of the statues that fell were of men who were basically politicians, perhaps at least one statue of an NZ woman politician would be appropriate. And no, I don’t think Ruth Richardson, the budget hacker, would be suitable for Christchurch. I will have a good think about who would be suitable for Lieanne, Lordy, and Shorty to promote.

That’s about it for the first bulletin, Cantabrians and other Kiwibloggards generally.

Oh, you may be interested in a campaign the team and I are planning for New York.

Manhattan is a sexist, old-fashioned name. We are building a group of gals to campaign for a name change to Mshattan. I’ve already started using it on my official correspondance, and the postal people are accepting it, though some of the Muslim countries are unhappy about the change.

The Goldilocks Principle can be summed up neatly as “Venus is too hot, Mars is too cold, and Earth is just right.” The fact that Earth has an average surface temperature comfortably between the boiling point and freezing point of water, and thus is suitable for our sort of life, cannot be explained by simply suggesting that our planet orbits at just the right distance from the sun to absorb just the right amount of solar radiation. Our moderate temperatures are also the result of having just the right kind of atmosphere. A Venus-type atmosphere would produce hellish, Venus-like conditions on our planet; a Mars atmosphere would leave us shivering in a Martian-type deep freeze.

It sounds feasible that if> the planet warms enough to melt a heap of ice especially from the poles and oceans rise then the redistribition of weight could have an effect on earthquake prevalence and location. But that is not happening now.

I wonder what advice, if any, he is basing that on. Or does he know it’s not feasible and is pandering for votes of people that don’t know any better?

Mr Hide says prospecting for mineral wealth is the only way to reverse New Zealand’s economic fortunes.

Thing Dig seems a very narrow focus. The only hole he may get to dig is the political one he’s already in.

Muldoon said people don’t know their politicians, they only think they do. Under MMP your politician goes off and trades with (eg Maori party) leaving a further layer of distance. We need a new institution where issues are set out and people can proactively have a say (in advance rather than in response).

I’m not against expanding mining efforts, not even in Parks. But the way it’s coming out Hide seems thick.

He said the open-cast mine at Waihi was a tourist attraction.

“What is wrong with a few open-cast mines? I find the scale of them dramatic and grand. Plenty of other people do, too.”

I don’t think we will divert many tourists from Rotorua, Queenstown and Milford to a few holes in the ground. I haven’t seen “10 biggest hole attractions” on Lonely Planet.

I know there is mine tourism, I’ve been to a few mine things myself, but I wouldn’t have visited any area because of the mine stuff. And operating mines tend not to be on main tourist routes.

If they somehow managed to remove the top off the mountain at Pike River (as Hide has suggested) how much do you think it would increase tourist numbers in NZ? I’d suggest diddly squat, and Hide’s try-hard agenda won’t alter that reality.

Yep and It seems Don Elder at solid energy is keen to get his hands on the rock pile that is Pike river. Reckons they can deliver the coal. Probably right too. Just needs a bit more opening up and telling the Greenies to FO and we will get into the cash. Those that don’t want should be required to fund their own lives instead of leaning on the taxpayer.

Another woman we could commemorate would be Mabel Howard. She is the woman famous for holding up a huge pair of womens bloomers in parliament for all the modest and fainthearted to see. I think she is also responsible for all our animal protection laws.

China demands special treatment for Christchurch earthquake dead

China has demanded New Zealand give special compensation to Chinese families who lost their children in the Christchurch earthquake.

Seven Chinese nationals have been named as dead while 24 are missing, all from the CTV building-based language school.

Radio New Zealand reported Chinese Ambassador Xu Jianguo had made repeated requests for extra compensation above that paid through Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC).

I was just about to post about that Chinese compensation article, when I saw your post. You’ve said everything I wanted to say. They would be better off using some of the tens of billions of dollars that is lost to corruption in China to deal with this and many issues.

During an event on Thursday in Cambridge, Mass., Crowley called the treatment of Manning, whom military jailers forced to sleep naked for several days last week, “ridiculous and counterproductive and stupid.”

Asked about Crowley’s remarks at a news conference Friday, President Obama said he “asked the Pentagon whether or not the procedures that have been taken in terms of his confinement are appropriate and are meeting our basic standards. They assured me that they are.”

I must say..living in chc..is it my imagination or have the aftershocks here all but disappeared since the earthquake in Japan?

Interesting point starboard, but I think it may be coincidental, the Chch aftershocks where tapering off anyway.

But think I’ve noticed something else on NZ patterns.

If you look at the Geonet pattern of quakes at a “normal” time they are usually spread from the bottom of NZ below Fiordland up to White Island, scattered around that general line, with the normal absence along the main Alpine fault.

When the Feb 22 quake struck for several days all NZ quakes were concentrated around Lyttleton for a few days, then they slowly spread further around Chch, then gradually started to dot up and down NZ again.

I think I noticed a similar pattern after the Sep quake, but I’m not sure if it isn’t just an illusion due to a much greater number of quakes.

There’s a lot more to this China compensation story that just whether or not they should get it.

Why did the Chinese go public with something like this for example? Surely not to do an end run around the govt? They must have known the public answer from NZ was likely to be what Key said, before they did this?

Secondly what about the fact that we earn heaps from foreign students all over. There was a story tonight on SI tourism companies losing lots of business, whether or not they were based in or around Chch.

Thirdly the Asian mind and how it works with face etc. Have the Chinese lost face here, or did they go public to gain face amongst their own citizens?

I think there will be definitely be ramifications from this, far more significant than the dollar value of whatever the compensation might have been. And they won’t necessarily be announced in the media, either.
