Comparing party leader’s comments on the by election…

Leader Phil Goff said the swing to Labour was 4.2 per cent in the National stronghold.

“Despite the appalling weather, a higher percentage of Labour voters turned out, while National and ACT supporters stayed away in droves,” Mr Goff said.

“This should be a wake-up call to National that its failure to manage the economy and the impact of its policies are alienating more and more New Zealanders.”

Prime Minister John Key said he was happy with National’s victory but did not want to read too much into it.

“I think it shows that the Government’s in good shape, that it’s tracking well, but I think the turnout is so low and the conditions are so unusual that I wouldn’t read too much into it either way.”

Goff is again replete with standard eye glazing political blah blah blah.
Key puts in a political plug but reverts to stating the obvious.

Colin James backs this up and says after crunching the numbers there was “so little Left-Right swing that nothing much can be read into the result”.

This shows why Key has more voter empathy – his comments tend towards being realistic and believable, while far too often Goff hits the turn off switch.

I am still mystified at the lack of any reference to ‘state-of-the-art software’, Edreflect – “BEING INSTALLED in leading Auckland’s Macleans College, a decile-10 state school in Howick”, according to NZ herald yesterday, “HOPES TO INSTALL” in the next sentence – and subject of a 97 comment post ‘Heresy’ here on kiwiblog.

How is something, with so little status, ‘state-of-the-art ‘

mikey; me too. I sat up and saw the 4th SA wicket fall and figured it was a walk in in the park and toddled off to bed. totally surprised when catching the news this morning.

Same feeling about the Irish/English game.

I have watched all the others and always seem to miss the boil-overs.

Revealing vignettes in the Koru Lounge last night. Murray McCully in a sharp suit and open neck white shirt, carrying a briefcase and sitting quietly with a cuppa.

Metiria Turei in a too-tight tee shirt, long skirt and jandals amply re-filling her plate with another helping of curry and rice and still unable to wait to start forking it down before getting back to her seat. She has packed on the weight and looked fat and unhealthy.

Then downstairs to the departure gate to see Hone charge off to be first in the queue leaving his wife about five people behind, carrying the bags and hurrying to catch up.

RightNow – there are no water restrictions in SE QLD at the moment. However, the cost of living is higher and you will get the shits with an even worse bureaucracy than in NZ on the odd occasion you have to deal with the government. You’ll also pay a small fortune to buy or rent a house.

What are Maori obligations under the Treaty of Waitangi to compensate those that have suffered a loss due to the quake?

We are constantly hearing of Maori entitlements to benefits derived from “the land” because of the “partnership” between the Crown and the tribes. I see the Crown coughing up some money due to their obligations, so can someone give me the billing address for Maori so I can bill them for the damage their land has caused to my house – or is the money flow a one way deal?

RRM – we have already found the answer to your question is NO when compensation was reputedly sought after the initial quake last September for land which is found to be faulty.

The wonderful Treaty is a one-way avenue where all money goes towards Maori tribes to be spent on productive huis, consultation with kaumatuas, piss-up meetings at the marae, and above all on the promotion of the wonderful and advanced local “culture”, e.g., waka carving, flax weaving, tiki making, etc.

The National Party intends pushing the Marine and Coastal Area Bill through Parliament this week. John Key promised he would withdraw the bill if there wasn’t widespread public support. It appears that there is not.

This Bill will allow secret deals between Maoritocracy and a friendly Minister, instead of the Courts, (http://www.nzcpr.com/maoripartypaper_lr.pdf ) and eventually will lead to privatisation of our whole coast. This bill also shifts the burden of proof, which means that iwi will no longer have to prove that customary title exists, to the Crown who now will have to prove that it does not!

It is extremely dangerous in that it is sure to lead to racial unrest as the Maoritocracy start charging ordinary New Zealanders for access to the beaches, to be able to fish their waters – both Joe Public and commercial enterprises, and as coastal developments are held up until the bribes are sufficiently extortionate. It will also give Maoridom the huge wealth that lies in our seabed and on our foreshore.

John Key, Chris Findlayson, the National Party and Peter Dunne do not have the electorate’s mandate to introduce this bill. It is a massive betrayal of the ordinary Kiwi and will not be able to be undone.

Remember how Key and his party have listened to us over S59, the ETS , and the Electoral Finance Act. Once again they intend rammining this through Parliament …….. while the public are looking the other way.

I would love a dollar for every Bill that will be the end of civilisation as we know it. I suspect the Marine and Foreshore Bill will make little difference to any of us, not really satisfy anybody (Maori or Pakeha) and settle comfortably into obscurity.

It amazes me what people find to rant and froth about while our local bodies incur massive debt, pay themselves astronomical salaries and keep ramping up the rates.

That has a direct and daily effect on us all yet Manolo etc are much happier madly tilting at their racist windmills and searching their thesaurus for yet more inflammatory vocab.

Pete George – I have given you enough links – three so far, now do some work for yourself, visit them and follow links within them to get the facts. I know that you can (maybe/possibly). What is telling is that the vast majority of submissions to the Committee were against this Bill.

I doubt many people are happy or satisfied about the Marine & Coastal Area Bill but our leaders have sold us out & are blind & deaf to all protestations. I would be less worried if the clause enabling clandestine deals between cabinet & the promoters of apartheid had been struck out. The lack of disinfection afforded by light shining on these backroom antics concerns me much more than the bill itself.

Your reminder that the ripoff artists in local government are getting fat while passing on ludicrous rate increases is timely. The short fat trougher heading ACT needs to be reminded that not long ago he was looking to limit rate increases to 2% pa. A decrease of a similar amount for the next ten years might bring the rates bill of the average homeowner back to reality.

It must be something in the water. On P8 of Section A of the Dom Post this morning is an report of a group of mental defectives in rural Hastings asking for a bigger rates increase. It seems that the masochists weren’t content with the council’s proposed increase of 0.78% & have pleaded with the troughers to raise the increase to 2% to provide future flood clean ups.

Councils should be operating on a sinking lid budget, not the gold plated version funded by the ratepayers they purport to serve.

It would seem a good time to underwrite Madam Lash’s expansion of her Houses of Pain into Hawkes Bay. There would be no shortage of clientele.

She should be in a padded room, not Parliament. Imagine if John Key abused brainwashed Green party kids like this? He would probably be hounded to resign.

This will not even raise a single line in the MSM. It shows the so called “calibre” of the Green party when our MSM won;t criticise them for their daily brain farts and general fuckwittery.

John’s summary of the Three Kings Finlayson public meeting on 3rd March.

Mr Finlayson will take no comfort from the Three Kings meeting last night. He faced hostile questions from the beginning. At least 90% of the audience was supporting the Coastal Coalition.

He began with a history of the legislation but only… started in 2003, leaving out the long settled history of Crown ownership before that. He raised the 12000 existing titles to foreshore and seabed red herring. When I asked him how many of these went below the average high tide mark, he said lots. I had to say How many twice more to get him to say around 200. According to LINZ there are less than 50. He then ignored me and I was unable to ask another question all evening.

He seemed to indicate that the wording “without charge” would be added to the Bill but refused to say why this only applies to “every individual” and not to groups. He tried to invoke the sanctity of property rights, comparing our beaches to a chair or a table. It’s a pretty funny chair or table which can be lost for 150 years and then your try and reclaim it on the basis it belonged to your great great grandfather. And of course no mention of the fact that when beaches and seabeds became Crown property in the nineteenth century every person (Maori and some Pakeha) who lost some local rights gained a share in the foreshores and seabeds of the whole country. Any descendent getting special rights to some particular part of the country under this Bill now should lose their rights as members of the public to the remaining publicly owned beaches and seabeds, shouldn’t they?

It was not reassuring to hear the minister state that Thorndon Quay should be safe but all the Eastern Bay of Plenty could go to Te Whanau a Apanui and Taranaki to the iwi there. Will the beachside baches at Te Kaha mean that a small sliver of beach remains in Crown ownership? Nor was it reassuring to hear the Minister contradict himself on how far out customary title might extend, admitting that in the Sealord settlement and the Kaikoura whale watching case a “right of development” had been found to exist.

Nor was it reassuring to hear him admit that iwi could put in claims to hundreds of kilometres of coast and the onus was on the Government to prove that “exclusive possession” had been substantially interrupted.

Once the principle of private title has been conceded owners of customary titles will naturally ask “how come we own this and we can’t get any benefit from owning it” Future governments will concede more and more until there is nothing let.

One final question left the Minister hurrying off without any answer to cries of Shame – “Can you say your Coastal and Marine Bill will be any better drafted than the Auckland City Council Bill which has given unelected, unrepresentative advisory board members votes on every Council subcommittee without any one of seven councils noticing what it was going to mean.”

Well, Barky has wanted to put his own stamp on foreign policy. And what better to leave for his successor in 2012 than a string of bellicose Islamist regimes stretching from the Straits of Gibraltar to the Gulf of Oman? At this point it’s a case of whether known knowns or known unknowns are preferred.

As for Krazy Katherine, that sort of behaviour should be expected from a member of a totalitarian ideology who sings in parliament.
