The downside of years of Labour’s free-for-all policies. Nowadays, the population feel entitled to it, without thinking they are already paying for it, and complain when these “benefits” are withdrawn.

The Government is refusing to rule out further cuts to early childhood education as reductions affecting more than 2200 centres kick in today.

The Government announced at last year’s Budget it would eliminate the top rate of funding to early childhood centres.

Later in the year, Education Minister Anne Tolley announced an ECE taskforce would review the effectiveness of spending in the sector and propose new ideas.

Nick Smith/John Key’s ETS is to blame for part of this hike. Companies appear to be milking customers to the maximum possible extent:

Power bills set to rise up to 8pc from March

Two more power providers have revealed they are putting up their prices, with some customers facing an 8 per cent increase in their electricity bills.

Mercury says prices will rise for about 200,000 Auckland customers by an average of 3.5 per cent on April 1 as part of an annual review process. And about 246,000 Contact Energy customers nationwide will be paying, on average, between 6 and 8 per cent more.

The regions facing a 7 per cent increase from March 1 are Auckland, North Shore, Northland, Counties Manukau, Thames, Kapiti, Manawatu, Tasman and Invercargill.

Wellington, the Eastern Region, and Hawkes Bay customers face rises of 8 per cent and Christchurch customers will have a 6 per cent increase.

The same process seems to occur here where rich people (migrants) migrate to the best areas and as the population rises the government subsidises developers by (eg) building a tunnel under Auckland Harbour. It is justified as “growing the economy” but in reality the building itself is the stimulus.

More legal challenges for the Messiah’s health care plan:

A U.S. district judge ruled Monday that the health care law unconstitutional because it violates the Commerce Clause.
Judge Roger Vinson said as a result of the unconstitutionality of the “individual mandate” that requires people to buy insurance, the entire law must be thrown out.

“I must reluctantly conclude that Congress exceeded the bounds of its authority in passing the Act with the individual mandate. That is not to say, of course, that Congress is without power to address the problems and inequities in our health care system.

“Because the individual mandate is unconstitutional and not severable, the entire act must be declared void.”

The problem with the welfare system is that we disagree about where the line should fall between deserving and undeserving. Only a sociopath would baulk at helping blind people ( for instance), but what about people who are perceived to choose the DPB as a life style? I know a place where as an incentive to visit premises the lead sheep is told to “help yourself” and I’ve noticed that the amount people take is not much, some and a lot. Only societies where each person knows the other (and their character) will come close to being fair.

Ahem….

Has anybody noticed that Egypt is in turmoil and the Arab world is facing the biggest upheaval since the Iranian revolution? I suppose there’s nothing much we can do about it in li’l ‘ol EnZed, but still, I would have thought it might register somewhere as a discussion point, if for no other reason than what this might do to the world’s and our economy.

Re Egypt etc. THe dirt poor may not give a stuff (these places are over populated) but the middle classes will be uneasy about the possibility of the Muslim Sisterhood coming to power. The middle easterns have a case that the west has subdued the population by propping up the Saudis, while guzzling cheap oil.

A great idea but too many vested interests would oppose it. In some ways you could compare it to a leg wrongly set; it needs to be broken and reset.

Too soon to tell. He could just as easily end up being seen as a PM who starts cautiously in difficult times, gets a mandate for change and builds momentum. He has shown he is prepared to put his political future on the line to implement policies he believes in.

There’s a lot involved in being PM (and a lot of other people trying to influence things), you can’t expect a relative novice to come in and wave a wand of change.

That cheesy grin may mean something, good things take time.

Yes, there are some who will put “Catholic”, or “Anglican”, or whatever on a questionnaire form where it asks for “Religion” because that’s what they grew up with, but they never go to church anymore.

I’m talking about genuine Christians who live out their faith and take it seriously.

In ruling against President Obama‘s health care law, federal Judge Roger Vinson used Mr. Obama‘s own position from the 2008 campaign against him, arguing that there are other ways to tackle health care short of requiring every American to purchase insurance.

“I note that in 2008, then-Senator Obama supported a health care reform proposal that did not include an individual mandate because he was at that time strongly opposed to the idea, stating that ‘if a mandate was the solution, we can try that to solve homelessness by mandating everybody to buy a house,’” Judge Vinson wrote in a footnote toward the end of the 78-page ruling Monday.

Judge Vinson, a federal judge in the northern district of Florida, struck down the entire health care law as unconstitutional on Monday, though he is allowing the Obama administration to continue to implement and enforce it while the government appeals his ruling.

Now, that’s a pretty clear instruction, and elsewhere in the bible the lord lays out all manner of vile punishments.

There’s also a whole lot of other shit in the bible about how it’s OK to kidnap and rape women (and yes, this prick did rape his wife)

Just because it is in the bible it isn’t necessarily condoned (a common mistake) and there is an ENORMOUS difference between the old and new testaments. You know… things change, new covenants and all that.

A man has been charged with manslaughter in relation to the death of a five-year-old Napier girl in December.
Sahara Baker-Koro was found dead in her Napier home on December 21 last year.

Police said Kerry Ratana, 24, was due to appear in Napier District Court tomorrow.

I wrote about the background to the case last week, and, while I’m glad that Scandinavia’s great warrior for free speech will not be rotting in a Danish prison, I’m inclined to agree with Tundra Tabloids that the verdict of the court in Fredericksburg is something less than a ringing victory for the principle of freedom of expression.

US ambassador to China Jon Huntsman has resigned amid reports that he may seek the Republican nomination in 2012.

Huntsman, a smooth former Utah governor, wrote to Barack Obama to announce he would resign effective from April 30, after the White House noted he had told several officials he planned to leave in the first part of this year.

Gerrit, I think this is all a media beat-up (ably assisted by Martyn Bradbury). I know the reported players pretty well.

If Hone were to get booted out of the Maori Party, I suspect he would want to form some sort of alliance with the Greens before associating himself with the various individuals with no commitment to (or who oppose) tino rangatiratanga who are likely to be drawn to some new left party.

Sue denies anything is happening.

Matt was probably testing the waters for the idea by standing in the Mana byelection (I haven’t spoken with him about it), but the outcome there would not have given him confidence that it would fly.

Had I asked that question a decade ago, the answer would probably have been “yes”.

But the C-bomb has been blowing up in the strangest of places – like the Facebook page of archconservative Lisa Oldfield, wife of right-wing radio broadcaster David Oldfield.

The wife of another 2UE broadcaster, John Stanley, had tweeted that Oldfield’s show was “shite”.

Lisa responded by posting this question: “Can someone tell me why John Stanley’s wife is such a c…?”

Found out some more about Gurkhas:

On 12/13 May 1945 at Taungdaw, Burma [now Myanmar], Rifleman Lachhiman Gurung was manning the most forward post of his platoon which bore the brunt of an attack by at least 200 of the Japanese enemy. Twice he hurled back grenades which had fallen on his trench, but the third exploded in his right hand, blowing off his fingers, shattering his arm and severely wounding him in the face, body and right leg. His two comrades were also badly wounded but the rifleman, now alone and disregarding his wounds, loaded and fired his rifle with his left hand for four hours, calmly waiting for each attack which he met with fire at point blank range. Afterwards, when the casualties were counted, it is reported that there were 31 dead Japanese around his position which he had killed, with only one arm .

I used to work with a guy who was a sergent in the British Army, a veteran of the Falkland Island battles, he had a bit to do with the Gurkha’s.

Apparently the Gurkha’s knife (the kukri) MUST draw blood every time it is removed from its pouch or holder, even when a Gurkha removes his kukri for cleaning he will use it to make a small cut on his own arm before putting it back in its holder.

He also told me they are the most fearless bunch of soldiers he has ever seen in his life.
