The floods have entered Brisbane and the CBD!! is under threat. This looks like a major disaster with no end in sight.

Unfortunately, they don’t have an ETS either so this is likely to be more and more common.

Gonna be bigger than ’74. Bris river is overflowing, and the high tide is an hour away – but today isnt meant to be the “big one”, thats tomorrow.

Well, considering it is only a few cars and they would have been running the risk of being swept away and become either another fatality or a stupid idiot wasting the SES’s time…. I’d say no. Also, no matter how far they pushed them back, the water would have swallowed them anyway.

As has been drummed into everyone in SEQ over the last few days – don’t be a bloody idiot and enter flood waters. I doubt anyone would enter that water for a few cars, unless there were people trapped inside.

My recollection of Towoomba is that it is elevated above the Lockyer Valley, and the area is quite hilly. So there must have been a shit load of rain in a fairly localised catchment for this to happen. I recall a similar thing happening in Wollongong in 1984 when a small depression within a weather system got caught between the Illawarra escarpmentand some other hills – in the course of a couple of hours all the low country around Lake Illawarra was devestated.

And Towoomba is such a pretty little city too.

Whoa! Water has so much power!

I was half expecting to see more people rushing out at the start to save their vehicles. Obviously they were unaware and the volume of water rose far too quickly!

Is there any news of all the missing people? 72 of them. It is not looking good for them. I have relations in Towoomba and other relations from NZ visiting them. The visitors can’t get back here because they can’t get to the airport. Don there seems to be concern about the water from Towoomba heading towards a dam. There is a number being advertised for people wanting to know about friends and loved ones over there. Does anyone have this number? I am off to ring a friend in Brisbane. Very sad for everyone.

That may be the Wivenhoe dam – my older brother worked on its construction back in the early 80’s. He lived in Lowood – a village about 20 km. NW of Ipswich – all in the Lockyer Valley. There is another man made lake – or dam – called I think, lake Jamieson not far away as well.
I have a nephew living in Esk, a small town about 30 km. N of Towoomba, but above the valley – don’t know how he is faring.

Also there is another confirmed dead bringing the total to 9, and 66 still missing. Death toll expected to rise.

Aussie, the land of extremes.

I was cutting zuchinis (of all jobs) in Stanthorpe once and the farmer told us it was something like fifty degrees C in the shed thermometer.

I hadn’t really noticed it until the next day I couldn’t walk as my legs cramped up so badly for lack of salt I guessed.

Lasted for about three days. The flies were worse than the heat though.

I have a mate in Toowoomba but he was in NZ when this went down. Now he is on the Gold Coast, quite happy as he is crazy about surfing.

Lucky to escape this, he is not sure about his house though.

Thanks Owen,
I do remember a few years ago reading a comment from you deriding the Tauranga Council being concerned about sea levels rising due to CO2 and you saying they had it all wrong . Instead of legislating to prepare for rising sea levels they should be concerned about “whats behind them” as in flooding coming down from the hills.
Very prescient of you.
