Does anybody else find it rather ghoulish that the media keep banging on that this dead boy Cem Erbay is the stepson of a public figure and RNZ presenter Simon Mercep?

I am no fan of name suppression in the way it is applied to criminals and general scum… but does Mr mercep have to have this flung around all over the place? Is there no room for taste and respect any more?

Cancer patients suffering from a range of 14 types of cancer will no longer receive treatment in the central north island district of New Zealand.

Cancer patients deemed least likely to benefit from treatment will be sent back to their GPs for, ‘other options for
support.’

The Cancer Society CEO reminds us that, ‘this is not a perfect world’ and ‘if we have to have a list, of cancers that
will not be treated in future, then this is a good list.’

Here we go people.
If this is allowed to happen, how long will it be before this is considered the norm and is
adopted throughout the whole country?

If you are going to get cancer make sure its not one thats on the “no treatment for you list”

How long before more cancers are added to the 14 “not treatable any longer in New Zealand” list ?

Will any member of the fourth estate ask Minister Ryall what he is intending to do about this dumbing down
of our health system? No. Dont be silly.

Do you remember, when, New Zealand Police first stated, ‘we cant investigate burglaries any longer.’
That was not questioned and that was the begining of the decline of our law enforcement.

If we, The People, just suck this up we will all deserve what we get.

Remind me. How much per year do we spend on Health in this country? How does this compare per head
with other first world countries who CAN treat these types of cancer?

Will you leave it untill your kid gets a cancer on the ‘not treatable in NZ list’ before you complain?

Or, do you think this is fair enough?

Manolo, went to the Stratford races new years eve, no frigging bottles of water there. Take your own alcohol, take as much and whatever you like. Bloody brilliant day, no fucking lining for so many bottles of beer per person, no extortion over prices, no wankers telling you if you have had to much, great bar services available and the barman leaves the bottle if you require a top up, no troubles, large happy crowd. But then again this is in the country where things are civilised.

In fact, great strides were made in science by Christian men and women (of which the Jesuits were in the forefront).

We have all heard a great deal about the Church’s alleged hostility toward science. What most people fail to realize is that historians of science have spent the past half-century drastically revising this conventional wisdom, arguing that the Church’s role in the development of Western science was far more salutary than previously thought. I am speaking not about Catholic apologists but about serious and important scholars of the history of science such as J.L. Heilbron, A.C. Crombie, David Lindberg, Edward Grant, and Thomas Goldstein.
It is all very well to point out that important scientists, like Louis Pasteur, have been Catholic. More revealing is how many priests have distinguished themselves in the sciences. It turns out, for instance, that the first person to measure the rate of acceleration of a freely falling body was Fr. Giambattista Riccioli. The man who has been called the father of Egyptology was Fr. Athanasius Kircher (also called “master of a hundred arts” for the breadth of his knowledge). Fr. Roger Boscovich, who has been described as “the greatest genius that Yugoslavia ever produced,” has often been called the father of modern atomic theory.

In the sciences it was the Jesuits in particular who distinguished themselves; some 35 craters on the moon, in fact, are named after Jesuit scientists and mathematicians.

By the eighteenth century, the Jesuits

had contributed to the development of pendulum clocks, pantographs, barometers, reflecting telescopes and microscopes, to scientific fields as various as magnetism, optics and electricity. They observed, in some cases before anyone else, the colored bands on Jupiter’s surface, the Andromeda nebula and Saturn’s rings. They theorized about the circulation of the blood (independently of Harvey), the theoretical possibility of flight, the way the moon effected the tides, and the wave-like nature of light. Star maps of the southern hemisphere, symbolic logic, flood-control measures on the Po and Adige rivers, introducing plus and minus signs into Italian mathematics — all were typical Jesuit achievements, and scientists as influential as Fermat, Huygens, Leibniz and Newton were not alone in counting Jesuits among their most prized correspondents [Jonathan Wright, The Jesuits, 2004, p. 189].

As far as science and Islam, Robert Spencer writes in a book –

But the main coup de grace to Islamic scientific and philosophical inquiry may have come from the Qu’ran itself. The holy book of Islam portrays Allah as absolutely sovereign and bound by nothing. This sovereignty was so absolute that is precluded a key assumption that helped foster the development of science in Europe: Jews and Christians believe that God is good, and that His goodness is consistent. Therefore he created the universe according to rational laws that can be discovered, making scientific investigation worthwhile. Saint Thomas Aquinas explains –

Since the principles of certain sciences – of logic, geometry and arithmetic, for instance – are derived exclusively from the formal principals of things, upon which their essence depends, it follows that God cannot make the contraries of these principals; he cannot make the genus not to be predictable of the species, nor lines drawn from the circle’s centre to it’s circumference not to be equal, nor the three angles of a rectilinear triangle not to be equal to two right angles

But in Islam, Allah is absolutely free. Al-Ghazali and others took issue with the very idea that there were laws of nature; that would be blasphemy, a denial of Allah’s freedom. To say that he created the Universe according to consistent, rational laws, or that he “cannot” do something – as Aquinas affirms here – would be to bind his absolute sovereignty. His will controls all, but it is inscrutable.
Thus modern science developed in Christian Europe rather than the House of Islam. In the Islamic world, Allah killed science

side show I loved the idiocy of police arresting people in Whangamata for breaking the by-law about having liquor in public places. We timorously hid our whisky and wine in the pushchair but where’s the sense in making a by-law and then importing hordes of cops (they were swarming round the little family groups between the flags) to arrest people for breaking it?

Or do Kiwis just love lots and lots of rules for others to be caught and punished for breaking?

But I DISAGREE with its concluding assertion.

From the final paragraph:

I believe radical/fundamentalist Islam is on the rise, and that rather than the “fanatics and the bombers” being symbolic of the “death rattle” of fundamentalist Islam, I believe, rather, that this is the emergence of the true spirit behind Islam as it gains increasing ascendance in the West. What we see today is much the same as the way Islam operated under Mohammed, and under those who came after him early on as Islam ‘developed’. So rather than a “death rattle”, I believe what we are seeing is the [re]birthing of 7th century Islam [especially] in the West.

And while true Christianity may have cast of the shackles of Roman Catholicism during the Reformation by going back to its biblical foundation, Islam is unable to be reformed – it will always go back to its true [satanic] roots and source of authority; the Koran and Hadiths.

Yeah BeaB, you so right, we must be one of the most over regulated countries on the whole planet. The fucking fruit loops can’t help themselves, we must have a poxy law for everything we do. Pray tell me with all these laws have we become a more caring and thoughtful society, think bloody not. Do the thousands of laws on the books actually work, seems to me the more we regulate the greater the chaos. I’m not against laws as such but our socialist society seems to think that if something is wrong a fucking law will fix it, these people are mad, quite mad.

The Christian church ( Catholic) existed from the time of Pentecost for at least three decades before Paul wrote his letters, and at least five decades before the Gospels were written. More, it was the Catholic Church that distinguished the canonical books and put the bible together, finally in the 4 th. century.

So which “Bible” Christians are you talking about ? 😉

Actually, Ryan, Christianity is founded upon the gospel of Jesus Christ, as evidenced by the fact that people became Christians, and obtained salvation, prior to ~90 AD. There is no problem with the canon of scripture not being complete until some time later as this didn’t effect the gospel which was established early on.

And, of course, there were Old Testament saints who obtained salvation through faith in God, but prior to the revelation of Christ. Obviously, though, they weren’t Christians.

Some in the media take an utterly perverse delight in seeing one of their number damaged in any way whatsoever, even if by tragedy surrounding a family member. I guess they feel that if one of the pack is brought down, they might move up a peg.

No taste, no respect, and no accuracy, either. According to the Herald:

Police said foul play was unlikely.

There’s a grim irony in the Father Christmas story.
The tradition is based on a real bishop from Asia Minor (Turkey)when that country was Byzantine and Christian. It was then over run by Turks from central Asia.
The great churches are gone or converted into mosques or museums and the few remaining Christians live in fear .
Muslim immigrants to the west continue to spread the intolerance that is a mark of Islam.
And foolish westerners allow it in the name of human rights /diversity /multiculturalism or sheer self loathing.

And the Roman Catholic myths just keep on coming – Peter was NOT the first “pope”, and he certainly wasn’t the foundation of the TRUE church of Jesus Christ; Christ Himself is the ONLY foundation of the church. You Catholics keep thrashing the “Petros” vs “Petra” issue of Matthew 16:18, and continue to come to the wrong conclusion.

I thrashed this out with Lucia Maria and Fletch over on NZ Conservative a couple of weeks ago – I suggest you go and have a look – I’m not going to rehash it here.

Yank proggy piggies are crying about the Repubs about to take over the House (including DenseOldFuckwit’s cuzzie, he must be heartbroken), and our own proggy piggies are crying about the impending election in which they will (most likely – let’s not tempt fate!) be crushed. Two years of proggy piggy tears, my friends. I will savour them.

Now, let’s talk about videogames. I’ve been catching up recently. I clocked Red Dead Redemption, and it deserves all the accolades it gets. Starts off slow at first, but once you build up an arsenal and haul a few villains to the Sheriff, you can’t stop. Dead Rising 2 is similar – again, starts off slow and the combat is a bit cumbersome but rescuing the good people of Fortune City and slaying the undead (who behave very similarly to proggy piggies, strangely enough) is a lot of fun. I recommend them both. I hope to finish it before Dead Space 2 is out at the end of the month, the original was much-welcome return to the survival horror genre’s roots and I look forward to the sequel with anticipation.

Yeah, nickb. Like I say, I was catching up. Before Medal of Honor in October the last one I got was Just Cause 2 in April(!). Prob ended up getting a grand total of five, in all. Still got Fallout: New Vegas and Battlefield 2: Bad Company I want to try out as well.

Kris, I just read part of an email by Father John Corapi about why Peter is the Rock, and I think he makes some very good points that I haven’t heard a lot (apologies to gd readers for posting some snippets here).

All through the Old Testament, “Rock” with an uppercase”R” refers to God himself. Then in the Gospel of Matthew referred to above, we see Jesus, the “Rock,” because he is a divine subject of action, renaming Simon “Rock.” Jesus, the real “Rock,” is also referred to as the “bridegroom” or “groom” as well in Scripture. The Church is his “bride” (#796). We know, also from the Word, that in marriage, whether natural or supernatural, the “two become one flesh.” Jesus and his church are one; bridegroom and bride are one. Hence, Christ is naming Peter “Rock”, one with himself. There is no other “Rock” other than Christ absolutely speaking. However, the Rock, in a mystical marriage, unites his beloved bride, the Church, to himself. Simon is named “Rock”, and whoever hears the Rock Peter is hearing the Rock who is Christ; whoever rejects the Rock who is Peter, rejects the Rock Christ and the One who sent him, the Father.

You cannot separate the Lord Jesus from his beloved body and bride, the Church. To reject the teaching of Peter and his successors the Roman pontiffs, together with the bishops who are united with the Holy Father in teaching the one faith which has been handed down faithfully from the apostles, is to reject the teaching of Jesus Christ, and the One who sent him, the Father (cf. Luke 10:16).

Head and body are one; bridegroom and bride are one. Those who attack the Church attack Christ. When Saul of Tarsus was persecuting the newborn church on his way to Damascus, he was knocked off his horse by the light who is Christ. “He fell to the ground and at the same time heard a voice saying, ‘Saul, Saul, why do you persecute me?’ ‘Who are you, sir?’ he asked. The voice answered, ‘I am Jesus, the one you are persecuting.'” Saul was “breathing murderous threats against the Lord’s disciples,” against the Church. Christ told him clearly that he was persecuting him, Jesus, the Lord. Christ and his church are one. To love Jesus truly, we must love his church.

Thus, yes; Christ is the Rock, but so is the Church because Christ is the Bridegroom, the Church is the Bride and the Bride and the Bridegroom are one. Fr Corapi makes the point that too attack the Bride (the Church) is also to attack Jesus, the Bridegroom.

COLONISATION A FACTOR IN CHILD ABUSE STATS

Child abuse researcher Rawiri Taonui says impoverishment from colonisation and urbanisation is major factor in a higher rate of domestic violence among Maori.

The former head of Maori and ethnic studies at Canterbury University says earlier in the decade the rate of Maori child homicide dropped markedly.

But he says the recession has brought violence levels back to the levels of the Rogernomics era, as Maori families are harder hit by the economic downturn.

“Because of colonisation, the urbanisation of Maori and the sort of cumulative inter-generational impact of those experiences, a differential proportion of Maori are impoverished so you have this twin dynamic working together; impoverishment and not our ethnicity but our colonised experience coming together in a differential child homicide rate,” Mr Taonui says.

The trend is similar in low income communities around the world.

It is silly to blame violence on urbanisation.

Humans as a race prefer urbanisation. To live in large cities and cooperate is an advantage of human evolution. Cities equal higher standard of living. To blame urbanisation is simpler wrong. Frustration and poverty are reason for higher poverty not the fact we live in cities
