Muslims want an apology for jokes
Islamic community leaders have written to Prime Minister John Key demanding Building Minister Maurice Williamson apologise for jokes he made about Muslims.
The Federation of Islamic Associations New Zealand sent the letter more than a week ago but has yet to receive a response. At the time Mr Key played down the jokes, saying Mr Williamson was known for his humour.

I’m sure they’d be fine with it if it was jokes about Christians, atheists or any other group of people they don’t claim to represent, so what are they really complaining about? That somebody had the temerity to poke fun at them specifically. Given that, what are they really trying to do? I suggest they’re trying to shut down freedom of expression around Islam and Muslims.

Note the word “demanded” in there. That’s not making a request. They’re presupposing they have some right to demand this and that it will happen. They don’t. As well as this, they could have just let their displeasure or hurt be known and seen if they got some kind of apology, but as it is they’re seeking a forced apology (one likely to be insincere). What purpose does this serve other than to demean the person apologising?

Except that Tony Blair is not the only one of his cabinet to decide that the UK would go to war. So you cannot pin the UK’s decision in that respect on one man in a cabinet of mostly non-religious or atheist people.

Bush is an interesting one, as in going to war he might have had one motivation, but he had the support of a majority of the US citizenry, and, more importantly, a majority of the US Congress.

Even more importantly, reid’s comment was about “Christian soldiers supposedly doing YHWH’s work”, which your examples fail to show, unless you want to be pedantic about Bush being Commander in Chief.

So, again, examples please of “all those who have been blown hither and yon by Christian soldiers supposedly doing YHWH’s work”

Current day examples can be found in parts of India and Africa. Buggering of boys by catholic priests could also be seen as being “blown hither and you. In the very recent past, Ireland and the UK. Not to forget the Spanish in South America, and the vast number of European wars fought because of and over religion. Right from its foundation, Christianity has had blood on its hands.

And the risk of copping abuse of being anti-semitic, the jewish settlers causing much of the current ME strife believe they are doing YHWS’s work.

You are taking the mickey, MNIJ. I read a lot of history, but your examples are not military in nature, nor are they actual examples but, instead, are vague points that do not answer the question.

However, you say “In the very recent past, Ireland and the UK” when you know full well, or should know if you had ever spent time in Northern Ireland, that the sectarian violence in the North and the associated violence in the UK is almost exclusively political. The differences between Catholic and Protestant Northern Irishmen have their roots in their respective parts of the Christian religion, but are far more political than religious. Indeed, you can trace much of the current problem to the unionism stirred up by Lord Randolph Churchill, then carried on by Lord Craigavon (as he became). Religion was a convenient identifier, not a cause.

Your point about the ‘buggering of boys’ is stupid. Paedophilia is nothing to do with the question of motivation for military action.

Now, with regards to the Spanish in South America and the European Wars, can you please be more specific, especially giving the years of the conflict?

EDIT: and the question of Israeli actions doesn’t count because the point reid was making awas about Christianity.

Anyway, the correct perspective to view this particular issue from is that of the invaded – and polls and reports indicate that most Muslims see the wars as an attack on Islam by the Christian West. What you think in your legalistic brain is of little consequence to them.

No, you are making the same mistake that many Muslims make. Just because a person comes from a country that has a supposedly Christian past does not make them a Christian. Muslims don’t understand this because their religion is also a political system and they assume that Christianity is the same. That is like blaming the Japanese takeover of Korea on the Shinto religion, when it was nothing to do with that. Muslims believe, as you seem to, that there is such a thing as the ‘Christian West’, when in fact almost all of those countries are proudly secular, not Christian. Indeed, I have read some sermons by Muslim clerics that use the words ‘the Christian Secular West’, not realising that such a description is contradictory.

So, when you call particular soldiers Christian, what you are really meaning is that that solider comes from a country that has a past where Christianity was the major religion. Of course, I suspect that most Christians would say that you were wrong in doing so, because their religion is one that is individually adopted, rather than one that a person has because of the country they live in. Unlike a large majority of residents of Islamic countries.

And Bush and Blair were leaders, yes, but collective responsibility has to take effect. Moreover, are you seriously suggesting that the decisions to go to war were solely religious and in no way political?

Those are real examples, FE. The point is, this is what Muslims “feel” in exactly the same way that those who demand the entire Muslim race apologise, also “feel.”

Both positions are quite idiotic from a rational perspective and luckily a minority of people refuse to adopt either polarity for it is in the neutral ground between the two that the truth about this lies.

Fact is, neither side needs to apologise, except for those who directly participate in it. This approximates in my guess about 20 million of the 1,000 million+ population of total Muslims. All of those, from people who kill to people who facilitate, organise and donate, all of them, need to apologise and immediately cease and desist. But the 980+ million of them who DON’T PARTICIPATE IN ANY WAY need to apologise about as much as all Christians need to apologise for things like the Crusades. We don’t and they don’t.

Some however curiously, obdurately and obtusely fail to see this very elementary fact of geopolitical life as we know it, instead persisting in their mental peculiar fantasy that EVERY SINGLE MUSLIM IS A TERRORIST which is so fucked in the head one hardly knows where to begin, except to recommend they check themselves in somewhere before they hurt themselves.

Don’t know if you chaps heard the interview earlier in the week (Weds 22-09-10) on Nine to Noon, Radio NZ, about the collapse of Stadium Southland. It highlighted the drop-off in engineering standards in NZ in recent years, and structural engineer John Scarry highlighted the link between reducing engineering standards and reducing standards in general within society. And that both the government and IPENZ are complicit in what is essentially a cover-up of this fact.

Whatever the religious view of American soldiers, and I doubt that the overwhelming majority are actually Christian, they are all doing it because they are loyal Americans. The war in Iraq is not religious, it is political. Indeed, Blair takes the view that he was acting as a liberator of Muslims from an oppressive tyrant. It is just that the Muslim world does not see it that way, preferring to live under a tyrant so long as he is Muslim rather than have freedom brought to them by a non-Muslim.

There is far more chance of me being physically harmed by a Christian or an atheist than there is by a Muslim.

But I wouldn’t abuse anyone while walking past them. I do dig at some groups of people sometimes, including on here, but that’s usually part of an exchange and they have right of reply (or I was exercising my right of response). I’ve never knowingly debated with a Muslim so don’t know how it could go.

Actually, Legion, I think you’ll find that most Israelis are in fact atheists/agnostics, and have very little to do with the God who originally led them to the Promised Land. Much in the same way, as FES highlighted, that the US (and the rest of the West) is a secular state with only a historical link to Christianity. And even those soldiers who may be Christians/Jewish may not believe they are necessarily doing God’s work when they represent their country, etc.

Yes and it was a mirror of someone else’s comment and that’s why it was worded thusly. The point of that comment was that Muslims no more need apologise than Christians do.

Those who do such acts today need to both apologise and stop doing them, but not everyone does them, so what do those who don’t do them, have to apologise for?

I’m sorry that I keep refusing to offer you anything more than vague examples of my comment, and had it been my own original statement and not a parody of another’s, I would do so. But since that wasn’t my basic point, I don’t feel bound to. Sorry about that.

I take a strong view that if we let the lefties dominate the topics then it may well appear that either we agree with them or, alternatively, that we do not have the ability or the evidence to disagree with them. That is a wrong position to take. We must meet those who are wrong head on, otherwise we will lose. Because no matter what, these guys won’t go away. And they take silence as a victory.

And even your so called Moderate Muslim will never deny that the aim of Islam is to bring the entire globe into submission to Islam under Sharia Law. Next time you meet one ask him.

Yes it’s rather depressing for everyone, isn’t it.

I’m afraid I’m not one who believes this problem is insoluble. Some of you seem to imagine it is, for you never offer solutions, just point to how terrible and insoluble it all is.

To me this is a rather stupid position, since we have no choice. Unless those of you of this ilk, are recommending we slaughter, eliminate, liquidate, whatever you want to call it, every single Muslim in the whole wide world. I’m not sure if that’s what you’re recommending, but that seems to me the logical outcome of your perspective as outlined by your continual offerings.

So given that we have no choice, the sensible thing to do is to drop the emotion and understand the nature of the issue. Montgomery had a picture of Rommel on his wall in the desert, Lord Denning used to prepare the prosecution’s case before he prepared his defence, it’s universal wisdom, that in order to dissipate any threat whatsoever, you need to understand where it’s really coming from, why it’s there, and what drives it.

So given this, in my view, the simple cold hard fact is for some reason, Muslims today are really angry. Explaining in various ways how unreasonable all of this is, is simply pointless. Dropping the moral outrage, for that is all it is, and grappling with the question of why this is, across the various countries, in Asia as well as in the ME, across Africa, is a positive exercise.

And when you look at it like that, only then are you equipped to logically and truthfully examine just precisely why it is that Muslims are angry.

Kris points continually to the fact that Islam resembles Communism in its drive to take over the world, but so what if it says that? Does anyone really think now, with historical insight, that Communism’s actions was REALLY driven by that particular Marxist tenet? Really? I mean, c’mon. Duh. So why should this be any different. BTW, newsflash. Just because political leaders claim to be doing something in the name of something or someone, it doesn’t make it true, dummy.

The fact is, every single anti-Muslim argument people put forward, misses the fundamental point.

Boobquake this year was initiated by an atheist University graduate in response to Iranian theological lunacy.

And rather than being on Kiwiblog yesterday afternoon, I spent a couple of hours catching up with a Yemeni woman I hadn’t seen for a couple of weeks. Largely because I’d assisted her escape the threat of an honour killing & she’s been changing her identity in an entire new location.

The only way to deal with this in my view is to reach out over radical Islam’s heads directly to their passive supporters and win them over to our side. You can’t force them over this is a hearts and minds, it has to be, there is no other way.

Only when we do that on a concerted ongoing basis across every continent will we see a difference.

The current approach is toward threat identification and containment and that has to shift gear and change into dissipation. Of course it’s a mammoth task and unfortunately requires something like a Marshall Plan scale and who’s going to fund that?

Islam is half way through taking over the globe. Much of Africa, Asia, what was the USSR, etc., have already succumbed to Islam. And of course Europe and the UK are well on the way. They don’t call them “Eurabia” and “Londonistan” for nothing.

And what doesn’t succumb through Islamic immigration will succumb through Islamic terrorism; as did most of Africa, and what was once the Christian Middle East.

Thank you, Chthoniid, for pointing this out. I think in part this perception may come about because of the matter of proximity. I and many other atheists/agnostics are no more tolerant of Islam than Christianity, yet because of the country we live in – where Christianity is the dominant religion – issues around Christianity possibly come up more often than issues around Islam, both because of proximity and potential impact on the community we exist within. Furthermore, where we may criticise Islam, it is probably less likely to be noticed by those who hold the perception of atheists as more tolerant of Islam than Christianity, given that many of those who have this perception seem more likely to be Christians and thus are more likely to notice when the group they belong to is brought up for criticism.

Myers is fiercely critical of Islam, for example, and to my knowledge this is much the same for other prominent atheist critics. I would guess, however, that a Christian a person is much more likely to hear about Myers or Dawkins criticising Christianity than Islam. This doesn’t mean that such criticism doesn’t occur.

Seriously though kowtow, some people do actually believe that the Muslim world must sort this out themselves. This fails utterly to recognise the inarguable reality that the west’s actions exacerbate the dynamic.

To seriously imagine that Muslims have nothing whatsoever to be aggrieved about is to fail Humanity 101 and World History 101 both with Z-minus-triple-dunce grades. I mean, it’s axiomatic, isn’t it, that you can’t think straight if all you ever think about is how evil, mad and dangerous these people are.

I think actually in terms of putting oneself inside an average Muslim’s head it helps to understand what it is to be religious. A lot of people who don’t know that, appear to make the mistake of thinking anything the least bit religious is at the end of the day, always about fanaticism. Those of us who have had genuine faith experience know it’s nothing of the sort, we know it, personally, as an experience and not as an intellectual concept. And all of that really helps if you wanted to imagine oneself in say Cairo or Istanbul.

Radical Islam is fanatical. But Islam has many stripes and that’s only one. Only the truly massively thick idiot conflates Radical Islam with general Islam.

Young King Arthur was ambushed and imprisoned by the monarch of a neighbouring kingdom. The monarch could have killed him but was moved by Arthur’s youth and ideals. So, the monarch offered him his freedom, as long as he could answer a very difficult question. Arthur would have a year to figure out the answer and, if after a year, he still had no answer, he would be put to death.

The question?…What do women really want? Such a question would perplex even the most knowledgeable man, and to young Arthur, it seemed an impossible query. But, since it was better than death, he accepted the monarch’s proposition to have an answer by year’s end.

He returned to his kingdom and began to poll everyone: the princess, the priests, the wise men and even the court jester. He spoke with everyone, but no one could give him a satisfactory answer.

Many people advised him to consult the old witch, for only she would have the answer.

But the price would be high; as the witch was famous throughout the kingdom for the exorbitant prices she charged.

The last day of the year arrived and Arthur had no choice but to talk to the witch. She agreed to answer the question, but he would have to agree to her price first.

The old witch wanted to marry Sir Lancelot, the most noble of the Knights of the Round Table and Arthur’s closest friend!

Young Arthur was horrified. She was hunchbacked and hideous, had only one tooth, smelled like sewage, made obscene noises, etc. He had never encountered such a repugnant creature in all his life.

He refused to force his friend to marry her and endure such a terrible burden; but Lancelot, learning of the proposal, spoke with Arthur

He said nothing was too big of a sacrifice compared to Arthur’s life and the preservation of the Round Table.

Hence, a wedding was proclaimed and the witch answered Arthur’s question thus:

What a woman really wants, she answered….is to be in charge of her own life.

Everyone in the kingdom instantly knew that the witch had uttered a great truth and that Arthur’s life would be spared.

And so it was, the neighboring monarch granted Arthur his freedom and Lancelot and the witch had a wonderful wedding.

The honeymoon hour approached and Lancelot, steeling himself for a horrific experience, entered the bedroom. But, what a sight awaited him. The most beautiful woman he had ever seen lay before him on the bed. The astounded Lancelot asked what had happened

The beauty replied that since he had been so kind to her when she appeared as a witch, she would henceforth, be her horrible deformed self only half the time and the beautiful maiden the other half.

Which would he prefer? Beautiful during the day….or night?

Lancelot pondered the predicament. During the day, a beautiful woman to show off to his friends, but at night, in the privacy of his castle, an old witch? Or, would he prefer having a hideous witch during the day, but by night, a beautiful woman for him to enjoy wondrous intimate moments?

While the above may be true for women (I actually think most women don’t even know what they want), perhaps the opposite is in fact true for Islam:
