Has anyone noticed how people guilty of criminal behaviour echo civil libertarians (excuses/views) and the prison reform people. Eg the wife of the P Lab man who executed the undercover policemen said (something like): “how am I going to get on. What’s the use of sending someone to prison”. Many of those peoples views seem to hint that the law is semi voluntary/ questionable? E.g a program about noise control: the young guy was proud of the fact that he was going to continue “tonight, tomorrow and the next night”. When the police arrived the woman at the scene wanted a search warrant, then said: “I’ll let you, you and you on to the property”.
PS One day a farmer is shot it will be a race issue as people like Tariana Turia, the Greens and assorted haters and wreckers have been priming them for a couple of decades.

Congratulation & well done to the Handley brothers, their team and investors from Hyperfactory software company, who have been reported in the news to have sold the company to a US buyer for ~$70 millions. Geoff Ross (of 42-below) was reported in recent months to have bought a chunk of the company (ie, Hyperfactory) and I am wondering if Mr Ross, helped the sales’ process in trying to pitch it to other tech investors/companies in the US. Mr Ross made a right move in buying into Hyperfactory.

“Courtesy of the emissions trading scheme (ETS), households can expect to pay a couple of hundred dollars extra a year in fuel and electricity costs.

You might think that doesn’t sound too bad – a bargain even – if it delivers a sizable dent in greenhouse gas emissions. That’s unlikely to happen.

The ETS is our belated attempt to meet obligations under the Kyoto Protocol. We’ve signed up to reduce greenhouse gas emissions to 1990 levels by 2012. Gross emissions are now sitting 22 percent above 1990 levels and the best estimates are the ETS will knock off a mere 1 percent by 2012.

With its extra costs for consumers, few benefits and labyrinthine rules, it’s hard to find much to like about this scheme.”

Charges laid after cycle incident

Police have charged a 41-year-old Outram woman with unlawfully taking a bicycle, dangerous driving, and assault with a weapon after an altercation with two cyclists at the weekend.

Police were still seeking one other person – the woman’s 17-year-old daughter – in relation to the incident, and it was likely she would also be charged.

I looked through that article to find exactly how this agency was “successful” but couldn’t find any specifics. I wish journalists would back up these blanket comments with some detail.

By unfairly attacking Israel, former New Zealand prime minister Helen Clark could be positioning herself for the UN’s top job, says Alan Gold

Helen Clark is known to harbour feelings of antipathy towards Israel. And now she is number three in the United Nations hierarchy, her aversion to the Jewish nation could pave her way into the UN’s top job. Sources within the UN say that Clark is quietly positioning herself to become the next Secretary-General when Ban Ki Moon retires, and there are few better ways for the former New Zealand prime minister to demonstrate her suitability for the job than to make known her anti- Israel credentials.

Mary Robinson, the former president of Ireland, also tried to use the UN’s traditional animus towards Israel to succeed Kofi Annan by aligning herself closely with the 57-member Islamic bloc. Now Clark, appointed more than a year ago as the head of the UN’s Development Programme, is thought to be using her growing influence in the world body to ensure that Geoffrey Palmer, prime minister of New Zealand from 1989 to 1990, heads the Commission of Enquiry into Israel’s raid on the Gaza-bound flotilla.

Palmer’s qualifications to lead an international enquiry are that he’s an academic lawyer with expertise in whaling. His understanding of the immense complexity of the unending Israel-Palestine conflict has yet to be revealed. While there have been no comments within the upper echelons of the UN regarding any bias which Palmer might nurse towards one side or the other, especially as he’s known to be fair-minded, one has to question why his appointment was so strongly propelled by Clark behind closed doors.

Her disposition against Israel is well recorded. In August 2006 she said openly that she found it ‘hard to believe’ that the accidental bombing of a UN observation post in Lebanon by Israel was anything other than deliberate targeting, despite ignoring impartial evidence that Hezbollah was using the observers as shields in their assault against the Israeli Army. Her diplomatic blunder came only two years after her suspension of all diplomatic contacts with Israel when hapless Mossad agents were caught red- handed trying to forge a new identity using New Zealand passports.

The appointment of Palmer to head the UN’s Gaza enquiry would not guarantee Clark an anti-Israeli outcome, but senior UN officials can’t explain her championship of his candidacy in terms other than ‘it’ll certainly help her in the eyes of the General Assembly’. And without any expert knowledge, his conclusions will be greatly influenced by those who are picked to assist him. Judging by the bias of the UN’s Goldstone Commission members into the 2009 war against the Hamas government in Gaza, Israelis will be viewing this new enquiry with groaning scepticism.

But high-level UN enquiries aren’t the only problems afflicting Israel when it comes to this part of the world. There’s also the growing move for a boycott of Israeli trade by militant sections of the Australian and New Zealand trade union movement, especially the Australian Services Union, the CFMEU, the Australian Maritime Union, and the NZ Council of Trade Unions. This should come as no surprise to Clark and Palmer, because in their early days in New Zealand politics both were known to have had a strong attachment to such radical left-wing socialist politics.

Lenin is believed to have first coined the term ‘useful idiots’, referring to people in Western nations who were both naïve and unquestioning in their political support of the Bolshevik revolution. The term has been used to describe those members of the leadership of Australian and New Zealand trade unions in their declared action to speed up the boycott of Israel. Because of Israel’s origin as a country built on socialist principles, a democratic nation with an interventionist Supreme Court and an unfettered media, the worldwide union movement rarely found itself complaining against Israel in the early years of that nation’s growth. And while these institutions are still strong in Israel, all that changed with the 1967 Six Day War and the creation of the propaganda wing of Yasser Arafat’s PLO.

Calls for global trade isolation of Israel have been growing stronger and louder, especially since 2005, when the international union movement attempted to send a message to the leadership of Israel regarding its treatment of Gazans and Palestinians on the West Bank. The intention of extremist groups within the international trade union movement has been to isolate the Jewish state, to undermine the confidence its people have in its government, and to make Israelis feel like global pariahs. The trade union’s international BDS campaign (boycott, divestment and sanctions) is all part of a movement to delegitimise Israel, ostensibly in defence of the Palestinian people. The arguments used by the union movement are well-known, well-travelled and predictable. What’s less easy to explain is the union movement’s corresponding reluctance to use such action against other nations identified as major abusers of their citizens’ rights.

If the union movement believes that it has a strong enough case against Israel’s treatment of Gazans to block its international trade, then why doesn’t it believe it should take reciprocal action against Egypt, which also has a land and sea blockade in force, and has built a massive steel wall along its border with Gaza? Or why doesn’t the local union movement take punitive action against Iran, which is guilty of atrocious human rights violations against those who oppose its government, a government which stole the democratic election from its own people a year ago?

And what about a boycott of goods from Turkey, which has been committing human rights violations against its Kurdish minority for decades, even refusing to admit that it was responsible for the deaths of one and a half million Armenians in 1915, the first genocide of the modern era? How much union militancy have we seen against China’s most recent repressive treatment of the Muslim Uyghur people, where nearly 200 people were slaughtered in their regional capital of Urumqi?

While the union movement is using its muscle against Israel, why has it done so little about the Sudanese government’s massacre of the citizens of Darfur, where nearly three million human beings have been displaced and upwards of 400,000 are estimated to have been killed?

There have been innumerable occasions when governments have abused the human rights of their citizens, but where the union movement of Australia and New Zealand has been noticeably silent. One has to wonder why the Israeli government seem to be the bête noire of the militant left-wing unionists. Perhaps because easy targets do have their attractions.

And there are few targets easier to attack than Israel. Yet it is the only country in the Middle East where women, gays, unionists, those who oppose the government, militant journalists and communists, far from being persecuted, are protected by a fortress of civil rights legislation. Perhaps it’s time that militant unionists, as well as Clark and Palmer, opened their eyes to what’s really going on in the wider world, rather than through such a narrow focus.

And as the article highlights: “They may call it [Pakistan] the “Land of the Pure” “, and just as this is clearly NOT the case, we once again have highlighted to us the hypocrisy of Islam.

But why are we surprised when Islam continues to ‘claim’ to be the “Religion of Peace”, not to mention its ‘claim’ to be the “Religion of Purity”? – both claims in direct contradiction to what the facts on the ground continue to reveal. And just as Polanski had a penchant for 13 year olds [at least she was possibly menstruating], we know that Islam’s founder and prophet, Mohammed, liked them around 9 years old – not even old enough to ‘bleed’ [apologies, but that’s the bottom line]. I guess the ‘good’ Muslims of Pakistan are just faithfully following the example of their sexually perverted, murderous, lying, cheating founder and prophet [so maybe on that basis they’re not hypocrites at all?].

LIVE FREE OR DIE! has the state slogan of New Hampshire since 1945. It was illegal to not display the motto on vehicle license plates from 1971 but some Jehovahs Witnesses made a stand against having to (they objected to “To die” because they believed in everlasting life) and were supported by a court decision.

The phrase comes from a toast written by General John Stark on July 31, 1809.

Live free or die: Death is not the worst of evils.

A possible earlier source is Patrick Henry’s March 23, 1775 speech to the the legislative body of the Virginia colony, which contained:

Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, Almighty God! I know not what course others may take; but as for me, give me liberty or give me death!

In Catalan “Viurem lliures o morirem” is used as a symbol of Catalan independentism.

I still find it curious. If I was not free my main thoughts would be towards becoming free, not killing myself.

No Kristy, your words, not mine. I didn’t promote that idea at all, you are trying to twist what I said to fit your prejudices.

I think there is hypocrisy in religions generally – actually, it’s people that follow religions that are often hypocritical. So to be clear – I think some Muslims and some Christians (but not excluding other religious people) are hypocritical when it comes to religious matters and morals.

And to try and prevent this topic deteriorating into futile chaos I’m not going to comment on this again.

You’re not good at guessing. That’s quite different. Are you suggesting that all those who were captured (had their freedom taken from them, some of whom worked under slavery) committed greater sins than those who died? Should they have allowed themselves to be killed instead?

Most of them lived to enjoy freedom again without oppression.

It’s called rehabilitation, and restorative justice. And sometimes, it works.

I think there is a case that all police cars should have fire arms in their boots, so officers can use them in self defence at least. That would require much more intensive fire arms training for police officers though. It looks like this may occur.

Busy people are happy people and who makes the rules that govern NZ that either encourage or discourage Kiwi’s towards gainful activity, not all of which is work but which makes people happy and therefore less likely to be involved in crime.

Parliament perhaps.

Always used to shake my head at various Ministers of Labour who continually fought with unions and those that bend to them, even now, the worst example being Bolger.
He would rant on about the unions,especially in the freezing works and kick and snarl like a pansy about them. But woo a minute who made the rules, well of course none other than the ministers themselves. So who created the problem then. Not the unions because they didn’t make the rules they just used to use them along with their muscle.

The person who made the biggest difference was Stan Roger, former chief of the PSA. He changed the rules. Of course Birch went further but he went to far and left no protection for the weak. Hence the shift back to today.

Apply the same thinking to these other issues and really we can see who creates the problem.
Finance company rules,
tax rules,
rules for this and that and rules to fix the rules that were fucked bay some other rule.
Get the picture.
Socialists one and all.

Very few in our area teach Latin (haven’t found any yet, and I’ve looked at the subject list for 3 colleges). But they do teach French, as you’ve mentioned (it’s the language of international diplomacy) and Japanese.

The advantages of Latin are intense grammar training, a deeper understanding of the English language (a huge amount comes from Latin) and training of the mind.

Bruv, I have generally heard that when going over about 40 inches, go for plasma over LCD. Mates that work at JB, Dick Smith etc have all told me the same thing.

I got a 42 inch plasma from JB hifi for about $900 a year ago, it was a budget sounding kind of brand I have never heard of (Soniq) but it is bloody awesome, the rugby on sky is great. Definitely give JB a look.

Gross domestic product grew 19.3 per cent in the second quarter from a year earlier and jumped an annualised seasonally-adjusted 26 per cent, the Trade and Industry Ministry said yesterday.

SINGAPORE – Singapore expects its economy to soar 15 per cent this year after surging manufacturing fuelled a record expansion in the second quarter.

Gross domestic product grew 19.3 per cent in the second quarter from a year earlier and jumped an annualised seasonally-adjusted 26 per cent, the Trade and Industry Ministry said yesterday.

The city-state’s economy will likely expand between 13 per cent and 15 per cent this year, more than the Government’s previous forecast of between 7 and 9 per cent, the ministry said.
