@ Pete – we live three streets back from the beach in Wanganui. Yesterday was the heaviest frost I can remember in the seven years we’ve been living there. At 7am, the air temp at the airport (roughly the same distance from the beach as our place) was -2.2*C. An air frost like that is rare in Wanganui.

d4j, I live on the coast and drive to work each morning. This winter (and last) there have been a few light frosts but nothing like what we previously got, it was common for parts of the streets to be in frost all day but not over the last two winters when it’s only been patchy.

Inland they are having a run of hard frosts, hoar frosts in Central Otago.

I was talking to both my daughters last night in Europe (one lives there) – they are having a run of hot weather at the moment which is more than normal.

I’m well aware this is the weather and not the climate.

Geez pete if I lie in bed another hour there is a lot less frost. I live about 900 mtrs from the beach and we have had 3 rippers the last 3 days, up there with anything in the 10 years we have lived here and on an emergency call at 0800 hrs yesterday there were the iciest streets in that 10 years.
Before anyone starts, I completely understand the difference between climate and weather,just as i understand the effects of sunspots, planet axis variations, watervapour and volcanic activity among other influences on our climate. What I am struggling with is the socalled relativity of CO2 when its concentrations in the atmosphere are so minor percentagewise and through the long history of our planet with methane emmissions and natural forrest fires etc what we are producing is of much more concern with resource depletion and health risks than the AGW scam..

@ backster – and Te Kuiti and Taumarunui have had their coldest nights since the keeping of records began in the late 1940’s – and I’ve just had an e-mail from my golf club, saying that the greens are unlikely to be playable before 10am for the next few days. This is bloody cold weather in the Central North Island, by whatever standard you measure it.

Oh, and the maximum temperature on the Turoa skifield today will be -1*C. So much for the predictions a few years ago that the NI skifields were headed for extinction. . Turoa already has a snow base of almost 1 metre, and typically doesn’t get the bulk of its snow until August.

Yes, I do grow crops. Garden, fruit and nut trees – planted about 25. Have planted 300-ish daffodils which are a good indicator of the timing of spring. Have planted 150 rhododendrons and keep an eye on when they bud.

FWIW, apprpos the temperatures we are experiencing in different parts of the country:

As one who grew up in the Waikato, moved away then came back, I have to say that the frosts here are almost non-existent.

Up until the late ’60’s We would get six weeks (seriously!!) of really hard, ‘kill all the bugs and blights’-type frosts, but now if we get one ‘hard’ frost a year it’s unusual. Locals I have talked to are of the opinion that the climate has largely changed as a result of the swamps being drained and the consequent reduction of water as a ‘starter’ for the low temperatures.

As I said, FWIW, but we were in Newmarket (Auckland) last Sunday (11 July) and had a ‘weld the windscreen-wipers to the glass’ type frost – and this only 3 miles from the sea.

Global warming?

No, just the planet doing what it is designed to do – be self-maintaining and a home fo mankind.

Hickey also wants us to learn Mandarin. Hickey is correct that NZers need to learn far more foreign languages. That is a weakness in most countries where English is the dominant tongue – because of course English is the world’s lingua franca at the moment. Obviously, Mandarin should be one of the main languages we learn, as should Japanese and perhaps Korean, alongside Spanish, Hindi, Russian and others. The more NZ residents who speak more languages, the better.

However, over all Hickey joins the sell-out mob who welcome as inevitable Chinese dominance of NZ population. Without even, of course, the equivalent of a Treaty of Waitangi to protect white and Maori rights.

Got to say as a South Islander, I feel less and less commonality with Auckland, which is becoming an Asian city, exporting fuck all and consuming most of the country’s exports. It’s size relevant to the rest of the country resembles that of main cities in central American Third World states to their hinterlands. Hickey’s future for NZ, IMHO, is more like that of Honduras than a thriving Hong Kong.

How much better it would be for South Islanders if southern NZ were a state of Australia rather than destined to be sucked into the Third World as peasants propping up Auckland. You can bet the white flight that is under way from Auckland to the South Island (Christchurch, Marlborough-Nelson, and Queenstown) would increase dramatically. As for Hickey and similar China-worshipping Auckland whites, they are welcome to their future as the new colonists’ lackeys. May they enjoy successes of Auckland at table tennis.

By the way Chris Trotter, who has replaced crazy Minto as the main leftist commentator in the Fairfucked NZ newspaper chain, has a good piece in today’s Christchurch Press. He’s far more rational than Minto. Good one, Fairfax!

IV2 – in Mangamahu we had -5oC yesterday morning. For three days in a row we couldn’t have showers or refil the toilet cistern after it was flushed becasue the water in the pipes from our storage tank to the house had frozen. We are 35km from you. when I left for Wellington yesterday afternoon there was still deep frost on the ground at 16:00 in places.

Also – a guy in a ute spun out behidn me at 06:15 this morning on SH2 near Normandale bridge in Lower Hutt on black ice. There were another two cars spun out a few hundred metres down the road. The ice was half an inch thick in places on that road.

Once the Socialists have either realised the game is up for “global warming” or imposed ETS/Cap and Trade, they’ll try a new scam. My guess it will be the “obesity epidemic”. Think “Minister for obesity issues”, or some other PC title. Units on”healthy eating” in state “schools”. The MSM beating the “obesity” drum. More positions and power for otherwise unemployable Socialists with BAs in Gender studies and Art History. No doubt, they’ll go after McDonalds, Burger King, KFC etc the same way they went after the tobacco companies in the 70s and 80s. Ther’ll be legisation proposed against trans fats too I guess. Better enjoy Mickey Ds while it’s still here. What do the rest of you think?

Once again we get a comparison between Christianity and Islam. Of course, a ‘Christian’ who murders an abortionist is going against everything Christ and the New Testament stands for, as he is indeed a murderer.
Whereas a Jihadist or Islamist who murders and commits acts of atrocity to “further the cause of Allah” is being entirely consistent with the teachings of the Koran and Hadith. And, of course, he is following the example as employed by the founder of Islam, Mohammed.

Pete, you’re about a month out of date. Monckton replied (see the PDF I linked to) to Abraham and gave him a month to respond or withdraw and apologise. Read Monckton’s #466 in the PDF – it is a clear indication that he intends to sue.
If it goes ahead (and barring a full apology from Abraham I’m certain it will) then the court case will likely become a proxy for the debate around AGW.

I’m looking forward to the massive reduction in MPs air flights now that the new improved ETS is law.

I mean, surely those 114 people in Parliament, that support this law, and their hangers on wouldn’t be so hypocritical as to pass a law taxing the plebs for carbon this and carbon that yet not lead by example, would they?

The Greens obviously will not fly at all since they are so concerned about the future of the planet.

I expect National to reduce their flights by at least 50% to help save us all from a catastrophic climate disaster.

Labour – well, their ETS was worse than Nationals so a 75% reduction should be about right for them.

Maori party probably same as Nationals 50% reduction, sorry kids no special racial quotas when it comes to the future of the planet.

ACT – you guys can fly as much as you always have since you are the only ones that can see through the hysteria.

I look forward to all the other extreme parliamentary savings that will be made in order to help save us all from this very real threat to our grandchildren and their future because I just know that the Nats have got our welfare at heart with these fantastic new taxes they are introducing. I really would hate to think that they’re all just a bunch of hypocritical cunts.

Hey how about Peak MP’s? There’s a glaring absence of politico-diversity in our current bunch. Mostly epiphytes, parasites and dinosaurs, with too few self-supporting, meat-eating primates.

Blue-tongue lizards were once the lords of Sydney’s backyards, but high-density development is banishing them to the city’s fringe.

Wildlife groups are reporting that blue-tongues and other natives, such as the tawny frogmouth, are being pushed to the edge of the city by more intense development and higher human population density.

”Even 10 years ago so many backyards had a blue-tongue but nowadays, due to snail baits and dogs and cats, you hardly see them any more – it’s a highlight if you do see one,” the general manager of the Australian Reptile Park, Mary Rayner, said.

Nz in the future. no blue tongues and other natives , no frog blogs and all down to ratbatiers and slug killers.

So ratbaiters unite; gone are the blues and the browns along with their froggy mates.

Krazy – when do you think the tipping point for peak MPs will hit?

Will it be worse than we thought?

What can we, as concerned citizens, do about this complete disaster staring us in the face?

Is there an alternative to MPs or will humankind have to develop one before the world ends in 2011 (peer reviewed?)?

Will the old adage ‘ the only good MP is a dead MP ‘ take on more relevance to the everyday person as the peak MP tipping point draws closer?

Allan Hubbard’s statutory manager Grant Thornton has released its first report showing investors in his Aorangi Securities shouldn’t expect any money back any time soon and warns it is concerned about a lack of paper work.

It said it had also frozen a further NZ$70 million in Hubbard Management Funds, a vehicle it wasn’t aware of previously where the accounts were hand written and where further money had been lost.

A TRIUMPH OF IDEOLOGY OVER COMMON SENSE

In politics, ideology can be very dangerous if imposed without proper constraint. Nine years of rampant socialism saw New Zealand’s public policy framework inundated with ideological dogma. From the dumbing down of the education system, to the massive expansion of the welfare state, to the undermining of the family, to the erosion of private property rights, to the imposition of extreme environmentalism, to the relentless expansion of the state sector at the expense of the country’s wealth creators – the list goes on and on.

Sheltered workshops, a core part of New Zealand society, had been established during the 1920s to provide employment for disabled people who wanted to work but were not able to hold down regular paid jobs.

A shocking aspect of the way the Labour Government went about changing this law was their failure to consult with the families who were going to be affected.

Once established, such a special Legislative Review Parliamentary Select Committee could kick the process off by calling for public feedback on older laws that are either failing to achieve their stated purpose, or are producing serious hardship and harm to society. Several such laws spring to mind, including the Domestic Purposes Benefit, the Child Support Act, and more recently, the anti-smacking law; however, a prime contender for priority review must surely be the DPEP Act repeal that has so seriously damaged the lives of a minority of extremely vulnerable people in society – the intellectually disabled and their families.
