This really is crunch time for Goff, he cannot allow Klark to run the Labour party from the UN.

It is also clear that Carter is still refusing to accept that he abused tax payer funds, Goff needs to demand the resignation of Cater or resign himself.

While Klark may be gone it is clear that she is still determined to see Labour remain as the homosexual or rainbow party above all else.

She really is cancerous and corrosive.

Doug – that’s not news. In addition to her fawning MPs of her era, she has placed her staffers Robertson, Hipkins and Ardern into the caucus. If she sent an instruction to roll Goff and replace with her man, it would be over quickly. But Maharey went to Massey, Mallard belted Tau and Dalziel lied, so she doesn’t have a replacement lined up.

When American Presidents leave office, they traditionally build an imposing stone library, name it after themselves and deposit all their truckloads of files and memorabilia there.

Now, perhaps inspired by her White House visits and her tenure working in New York as the Administrator of the UN Development Programme, Helen Clark is doing something similar.

It is understood that a trust associated with the former New Zealand Prime Minister and her husband, Peter Davis, has bought the house next door to their Auckland home.

But they are not planning to build a mansion like John Key’s, or to set up separate “his and hers” households.

Instead, according to the builder who worked on the property, Clark plans to build a library in the house, in which to keep her academic and political files.

Agreed. But I suspect this isn’t so much Clark running things, more likely that Carter is using her name to try and justify and bolster his decision (why else would he broadcast it?). Goff must know this – he has to stamp his own authority or he will keep being undermined.

Carter said: “We could argue the rights and wrongs of whether I’ve done anything wrong.”
He said the apology was given “because you have to think about what is good for the Labour Party”.
Carter was embarrassed again last week when it was revealed he promised exclusive interviews to both TV3 and TV One. “I guess I just wanted to be nice. It’s called PR, that’s what politicians do.”

Carter is in a world of his own. He doesn’t get it, doesn’t want to get it, I doubt he’ll ever get it.

Goff’s call.

Oil disaster update: U.S. reconsiders Dutch offer to supply oil skimmers

But it has gone from the sublime to the ridiculous.

It appears that the US government rejected the offer of these specialised boats (which “should have prevented most of the oil from ever getting even close to shore“) not only for political reasons (defending maritime unions’ monopoly) but also because they fell foul of the appalling EPA. Specifically, even though these skimmers remove vast amounts of oil from the sea, the water they pump back out is still not completely pure. So they were disallowed.

It’s like the city’s burning and the government bans the use of fire engines.

As the article says, This incident with the skimmers just shows the lack of leadership by the President and other government officials. Most people, certainly the local residents, recognized that the government systems to deal with the oil spill were inadequate. It took over 6 weeks for the government to allow the state of Louisiana to build sand berms to protect the marshes, after oil has already entered the marshes. Decisions need to be made, often without full information and sometimes conflicting rules and regulations. The oil well did not stop spilling oil as the government tried to study the problems and make recommendations. There was no one with the authority to make the fast decisions necessary to combat the spill.

As we have seen, the EPA had the legal responsibility with regard to this oil spill; yet it hasn’t just totally failed to act to meet its obligation, it has actively prevented the proper resources from being deployed.
Remember that when Obama’s on TV trying to make political capital out of all this and strong-arming BP to fund a clean-up of this ecological disaster which is vastly worse that it ever needed to be.

It was a pity that Sir Geoffrey Palmer was not on Q&A this morning. However, Murray McCully’s interview was interesting for showing his annoyance that a New Zealand MP was able to wave a Tibetan flag at a Chinese delegation. Even those of us who have little in common with Matt McCarten would endorse his use of the word “toadyism” in reference to Mr McCully.

Somehow it has become laudable to Holmes that Obama has taken two months to show any leadership.
His description of Fox news as, “rabid hounds” is revealing.
Obama is not frightened to be patient, not frightened to command. Put together a tremendous financial package.
Worked through the issues carefully, just as he did with health reform.

Which person should have the power to turn off the internet?

I read several years ago about index servers which apparently are the masters for IP addressing and if you take those out the net goes down. There were twelve of them when I read the article and they’re strategically located in Silicon Valley, NY and other places. I don’t know if that’s true or not but it makes sense. Remember DARPA gave the web a huge push and it would be surprising if they hadn’t built in a quick way to pull the plug.

To protect your children from Satan — in other words mainstream, open patriotic and pluralistic America — you either kept them at home where mom and dad could teach the children right from wrong or send them to a cloistered private evangelical/fundamentalist school. At home or in school you used curriculum prepared by the likes of James–beat-your-child-and-dare-to-discipline-Dobson, RJ-slavery-was-a-good-thing-Rushdoony, or many and other right-wing anti-American activists. That curriculum presented “secular America” as downright evil. Hating the USA became next to godliness.

Mountains of rotting food found at a government warehouse, soaring prices and soldiers raiding wholesalers accused of hoarding: Food supply is the latest battle in President Hugo Chavez’s socialist revolution.

Venezuelan President Hugo Chavez says government-led raids of food markets will reverse exploitation of the poor, whom he needs for political support.

Venezuelan army soldiers swept through the working class, pro-Chavez neighborhood of Catia in Caracas last week, seizing 120 tons of rice along with coffee and powdered milk that officials said was to be sold above regulated prices.

“The battle for food is a matter of national security,” said a red-shirted official from the Food Ministry, resting his arm on a pallet laden with bags of coffee.

It is also the latest issue to divide the Latin American country where Chavez has nationalized a wide swathe of the economy, he says to reverse years of exploitation of the poor.

“They are not going to stop us in the plan, which is to give the people what is their right,” Chavez said Friday during the inauguration of a supermarket chain the government bought this year from French retailer Casino.

Food prices are up 41 percent in the last 12 months during a deep recession, government figures show, despite the government’s growing network of state-run supermarkets that sell at discounts of up to 40 percent and are popular with his poor supporters.

Fighting back, Chavez says he is in an economic war against the “parasitic bourgeoisie” that tries to convince Venezuelans that socialism does not work by twisting facts and taking advantage of honest mistakes.

“They know where we are headed, we are going to take from the Venezuela bourgeoisie the hegemony of dominance in this country,” Chavez, who calls himself a Marxist, said to applause from supporters on his TV show on Sunday.

Chapter 9…had 53 authors in total but more than 40 were part of a network of people who worked previously together. In direct contradiction to the IPCC’s statements that the team of authors should have a wide range of views and experiences, most were climate modellers and there were many instances where several authors were associated with the same establishment…

The second draft of chapter 9…received comments from 55 people and 7 governments. Of these 62 only 5 reviewers explicitly endorsed the overall chapter…

Fifty-three authors and five reviewers are all that can be said to explicitly support the claim of a significant human influence on climate.

Well I’m just the happiest chappy today! Finally got myself a digital copy of Pink Floyd “Delicate Sound of Thunder”, it’s only taken 10 years………I played my old video copy to death and wore it out.
For some reason the music company won’t release this on DVD, I don’t know why it is excellent. Probably Waters and Gilmour having another multi-squillionaire bitch fight. Ah well, all hail modern technology!!!

New Zealanders who think they have star quality will have a chance to prove it, when a local version of the reality talent show X-Factor goes to air.

TV3 has acquired the rights, and production is scheduled to start next year. Programming director Kelly Martin says it is a massive undertaking. She says her team has not even started on the budgets yet.

Ms Martin says she and a couple of others are flying to Australia where they are working on the show at the moment. She says producers there have pretty clear ideas around what they think it should cost.

Music mogul Simon Cowell left American Idol last month to take the talent quest worldwide. Ms Martin says it has been “ages” since a big show like this was locally made. She says it is really exciting because it is a big entertainment show and TV3 has not yet had a programme of this scale

NZ Sovereignty would not be “another segmented, agenda-driven party”.

“We want to see a united New Zealand under one flag and one justice system, moving together in accordance with the original intent of the Treaty of Waitangi.”

Some of NZ Sovereignty’s other proposals include:
– A Civil Defence cadetship and corps and a voluntary outdoor survival life skills programme, designed for troubled youth or those not wishing to pursue tertiary education.
– Stopping the ACC levy tax and replacing the “no fault” clause in claims so those injured while committing a crime would no longer be covered.
– No dishing out of lump sum payments to those in prison.
– Repeal carbon tax legislation and withdraw from the Emissions Trading Scheme
– Regulate power companies and their charges
– Repeal the anti-smacking law
– Retain national assets and resist mining in National Parks
– Retain NZ’s Blue Ensign flag and national anthems
– Free dental care for school-aged children

Entities run by Canterbury millionaire Alan Hubbard are under investigation by the Serious Fraud Office as the Government moves today to try and protect $134m of investor cash.

Commerce Minister Simon Power this evening announced that the Government has placed Aorangi Securities, seven charitable trusts, Allan Hubbard and his wife Margaret Hubbard into statutory management.

Power said it was a very rare step to place individual people in to statutory management.

Telstra agrees to $11bn transfer deal

TELSTRA and the National Broadband Network Company have signed an $11 billion deal to migrate the telco giants internet and voice traffic to the governments $43bn fibre network.

The non-binding Financial Heads of Agreement with the NBN Co paves the way for Telstra to gradually decommission its expansive copper network and cable broadband service as the NBN is rolled out over the coming years.

The government’s ambitious NBN project will see a new fibre optic network built to service 90 per cent of the nation with internet access speeds of 100 megabits per second.

Telstra will be paid $9bn to migrate its customer across to the new network and to allow the NBN Co to use the telco’s infrastructure – its passive network of ducts, pits and pipes – to rip and replace its copper network with new fibre optic cables. The telco will be paid a disconnection fee for every customer it moves across to the new network.

“This is a sound outcome for NBN Co because when finalised it can maximise the use of existing infrastructure and accelerate the roll out of its network,” NBN Co Chief Executive, Mike Quigley, said today.

The deal will also see the federal government grant Telstra a number of regulatory concessions worth approximately $2bn. These concessions will soften some of the government’s legislative threats to force Telstra to divest some of its key assets like its stake in Foxtel. Telstra will continue to use its cable network to meet its pay TV contract with Foxtel.

Telstra also received a written guarantee from the Prime Minister that Telstra would not be barred from bidding for new wireless spectrum needed to evolve its mobile broadband business.

If the transaction is approved by the regulator and completed, it will deliver to Telstra a post-tax net present value of approximately $11bn.

The government and Telstra have been negotiating since September over the telco’s participation in the government’s superfast broadband project.

and i wd agree with him that this deal is a sellout/compromise…

and the more i think about it…why t.f.shouldn’t iwi be able to have full ownership of land/foreshore they can prove customary title to…?

..foreigners are able to ‘own’ coastland….

..why shouldn’t maori be able to do the same…?

what is ‘the problem’ here…?

Obama spending four hours golfing before visiting the Gulf coast = perfectly fine.

Hayward goes to a yacht race after he is removed from his reponsibilities overseeing the Gulf oil spill = intolerable.

The White House renewed its sharp criticism of BP Plc CEO Tony Hayward after he attended a yacht race off the English coast on Saturday as his company struggles to plug its huge Gulf of Mexico oil leak.

“This has just been part of a long line of PR gaffes and mistakes,” White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel said in an interview taped for ABC’s “This Week” week program, referring to Hayward.

Sheila Williams, a spokeswoman for the British energy giant, said Hayward attended the boat race at the Isle of Wight, saying he was spending some time with his teenage son after devoting most of the past two months away from family. […]

“Well, to quote Tony Hayward, he’s got his life back, as he would say,” Emanuel said, commenting on his attendance at the yacht race. “And I think we can all conclude that Tony Hayward is not going to have a second career in PR consulting.”

President Barack Obama hit the golf course Saturday with Vice President Joe Biden.

The White House pool report noted that Obama left at about 1 p.m. for the course at Andrews Air Force base, and his golfing parters [sic] included White House Trip Director Marvin Nicholson and photographer David Katz.

So Hayward, who was officially relieved of his duties concerning the spill cleanup Friday, is a despicable, heartless cad for going to a yacht race upon his return to England.

But our President — who according to the Oil Pollution Act of 1990 is INDEED considered by American law responsible for overseeing this cleanup — as oil continues to flow into the Gulf of Mexico can do whatever he wants on Saturday without a care that his adoring press might treat him similarly.

Left wing media? What left wing media?

It’ll be good when TVNZ shuts the fuck up about a meaningless oil spill and leaves Hayward alone too.

How an economy implodes, taken from a piece by Bill Bonner and worth quoting here. Just substitute the American references for the NZ equivalent.

“…….. in the beginning, an economy, a business, a nation…or even a family budget…is fresh, clean and dynamic. Over time, little by little, the parasites encrust themselves –like barnacles on a ship. Then, they grow. Eventually, they become as fat as ticks on a hound in the summertime…

At first, they are just nuisances. The economy can support them.

‘The masses want bread? Sure why not. Give them a circus too. And give my lazy brother-in-law a sinecure.’

Gradually, more and more people get their teeth into it. An unnecessary department in a thriving business. A subsidy to one group. A special favor to another. A make-work job…a handout…a bailout… An expense here. An extravagance there…

When things go well, the parasites take more blood. Heck, the economy can afford it. When they go badly, they grab the weakened host and pull it down in a feeding frenzy. BP, are you ready?

They succeed because in most cases it is generally cheaper to go along than to fight.

Without hardly noticing, the living become cooperative zombies too. The cigarette companies become tax collectors for the feds. The oil companies too. Doctors go along with nationalized health care. Teachers get their lifetime tenure. Ordinary citizens stand in line to be inspected at airports, counted by census takers, interrogated by tax collectors. Soon, the whole nation is zombified.

The zombies win. And then…there is collapse, war, revolution, bankruptcy… The zombies are killed off…new life begins.

That’s why the feds fight so hard to prevent a financial collapse. The last thing they want is a fresh, new, healthy economy…
