You are receiving this message because you are one of the thousands of people who signed the New Zealand Centre for Political Research petition requesting that the Prime Minister suspend National’s emissions trading scheme (ETS). You can read the letter that we sent him here>>>.

If the Prime Minister goes ahead with the next stage of the ETS on July 1st, when the transport, energy and industrial sectors are all scheduled to enter the scheme, the 5 percent increase in the price of power and 4 cents a litre rise in petrol and diesel prices will impact on the whole economy. This will force New Zealanders to pay more for food, heating, and all other goods and services. In addition, interest rates and the kiwi dollar will be driven up making it much more difficult for householders and exporters alike. To add insult to injury, National’s October 1st GST increase will be applied to ETS-inflated prices!

National promised that under their ETS New Zealand would not lead the world in climate change. Yet National’s scheme is by far the most comprehensive in the world as it is the only ETS that covers “all gases” and “all sectors”. That’s why it will be such a dreadful cost burden on our struggling economy. In comparison, the European Union, which runs the world’s only other comprehensive ETS, only targets the industrial and manufacturing sectors. Transport, households, small business, agriculture, construction and waste are all exempted. The only gas that is included in the EU scheme is carbon dioxide – all other greenhouse gases are excluded, including methane from livestock digestion which plays such a major part in National’s ETS.

In other words, in spite of their promises, National’s “all gases and all sectors” ETS will lead the world and any claim to the contrary is disingenuous.

None of New Zealand’s major trading partners have an ETS. Australia’s scheme is now suspended until 2013, Japan’s scheme has been delayed until 2012, the US scheme is stalled, and Canada’s scheme is still on the drawing board. Meanwhile China and India have no intention of imposing any scheme at all that would slow their economic progress. This means that New Zealand is the only country that intends to punish its vital business sector with significant costs that none of their competitors will incur.

They are just like the blacks of Africa , bone idle, lying and cheating – if they put just some of that energy into work they would be very wealthy. The latest bit of information is that thru all of their maori holdings they now own 15% of NZ’s GDP which means they are now receiving what they deserve in terms of their pro rata share. Don’t hear that bandied about much do you.

Wanna hear the latest doom conspiracy forecast for the oil spill in the Gulf?

It goes like this;

1 The oil is blowing through the pipe with such force that the sea floor around the pipe is eroding.

2 When this erodes enough the pipe will blow through and the hole will rupture so wide it will be impossible to plug.

3 Once this hole gets wide the point will come when the pressure between the oil and seawater will equalize.

4 Once this occurs the seawater will begin filling the oil cavity displacing the oil which will vent to the surface.

5 The bottom of the oil cavity has a temp of around 400C which will superheat the seawater turning it to steam.

6 This will have a effect of sending a shock wave up through the seawater to the surface causing a massive tsunami.

7 As usual with these ideas the US government knows this and is ‘secretly’ planning a mass evacuation for the coming months.

Millard Public Schools will stop using a children’s book about global warming — but only until the district can obtain copies with a factual error corrected.

A review committee, convened after parents complained, concluded that author Laurie David’s book, “The Down-to-Earth Guide to Global Warming,” contained “a major factual error” in a graphic about rising temperatures and carbon dioxide levels.

Mark Feldhausen, associate superintendent for educational services, this week sent a letter to parents who complained, including the wife of U.S. Rep. Lee Terry of Nebraska, outlining the committee’s findings.

“Although the authors have pledged to correct the graph in subsequent editions, the committee recommends that this correction be made to all MPS-owned texts before using it with students in the future,” Feldhausen wrote.

Corrected versions will continue to be used in Millard’s sixth-grade language arts curriculum, he wrote.

However, the district will cease to use a companion video about global warming, narrated by actor Leonardo DiCaprio, he wrote.

The committee found the video “without merit” and recommended that it not be used.

Robyn Terry, the congressman’s wife, had described the video as a “political commercial.”

Lee and Robyn Terry released a statement saying they were pleased with the decision and “impressed” by the district’s handling of the case.

You need to look at this graphic.

While Obama postures, the drillers are getting on with what has to be done.

Each of these relief wells is costing about $US100 million. The need to intercept the original well, (probably 8 1/2″ inches in diameter when drilled), 5000 feet below the surface of the sea, and 18000 feet below the sea bed. An awesome example of modern drilling engineering.

Well, major oil spills are a federal responsibility. Specifically, it is a legal duty of the EPA:

So why is it wrong of us to expect the government to meet and fulfull its obligations?

By the way, that’s the same EPA which proposes to effectively seize control of American industry by regulating CO2 emissions.

It’s the same every time: the state creates these vast, expensive bureaucracies and arrogates enormous powers to them; and they are worse than useless. Remember FEMA’s response after hurricane Katrina.

But in fact it’s worse than that. Much worse.

It’s not that Obama’s administration has completely failed to meet its legal obligation concerning major oil spills, it is actively preventing an effective response.
The global specialists in this field are European, and Obama’s administration refuses to allow them to operate in American waters because of cynical for special interest politics; in this case the US maritime unions.

This oil well blow out in not a new thing. Just last year the Aussies had one off the west coast that went for some months. Their one was further out to sea and was capped in exactly the same way as this one will be. By horizontal drilling into the drill stem.
We have holes of Taranaki that have been drilled in the same way, I think at the Tui field.
That Obama could extort 20 billion from BP when he could properly deal with the Lehmans etc tells us a lot about America, especially when their own companies have desecrated many areas of the world including the Niger which is a Chevron disaster that they have abandoned leaving oil leaks all over the place.

What the Americans have failed to consider is what is going to happen the moment an American oil company has a blowout. in any other country. That company will be gutted by the locals and they can only blame Obama.

Gulf OIl Spill
The oil spill would have have been monitored by USA govt agencies from day one. Despite BP claims that it was only a small leak, the evidience was on the oily surface and increasing, as shown by daily aerial photos.

BP said they would try to cap/bell etc but the only real way was by a relief well, months away in time.
One does not expect that the USA govt would be sucking the oil up thru a straw from the depths of the ocean floor. Surely they would be guided by their strengths and weaknesses. On the surface they have ships, Navy, Coast Guard and can hire or requistion what ever is required. Booms and whatever to be required to be made.

Plans a-z ,from around the rig for containment, and out to further levels, recognizing that it is a difficult place to make every thing to work to plan.should have been figured around the rig where the oil was coming up first, many stages in between,to finally defence of shores, so it is not too little, too late as the oil tide sweeps in.

The Government has not mobilized, like they do in war, like the rapid demand for resouces that were chased after for the Korean War. so now possibly looking at Plan Z to the theory of nuking, or HI-Explosives.

The USA has a Commander in Chief ! ! with virtually all the country’s resources, people, factories etc. behind it. Bailing out American finacial institutions was so easy. So he does not need any-one to act like Superman with Kyptonite. Get on and do your job !!, instead of pursuing side issues such as cap and trade, drilling moratiums.

1)Coast Guard and Navy to monitor, organise and do what they can.
2) Ships and boats to be requistioned and made ready and used.
3) Products to be ordered eg wool, booms, dispersants, and materials relevant, then manufactured and put together and delivered.

All the costs associated with it can be sorted out afterward with BP, as they have so much too loose any way. Sure BP may have made some stuff ups, but in the long term they obviously have a lot invested in the USA, and will want to make a return on it. So it is in their interests to work with the USA Govt. as in the long run they will know what side their bread is buttered on.

Money is in the system, stimulus money, unspent for the job boost schemes, waiting to be used prior to elections.

Unfortuanetly I do not think this will not be the only time that these materials will be required, though I certainly hope the industry and government learn a lot from this. .

It’s BP’s stuff up, they own, they are the ones best placed to fix it.

And for Viking2 to call the demand that BP stump up compensation “extortion” is just plain crazy. It was never a matter of whether compensation would be paid, but how much. I suggest the 20 billion is just a down payment.

That’s not the argument halfwit. The argument is that the oil should not ever have been permitted to reach the shores.

There was plenty of time to organise containment equipment. It was not done.

Obama wanted the crisis to ease the way into a Cap and Trade program. He needed video of dead sea birds and beaches coated in oil. He needed his mainstream media partners, the fake news services, to beam them into every home.

Today, while tidying up some stuff around the house I found a three of our kids papers – topic LAWS121 Jurisprudence. Paper 1 Q1 is on s59 repeal. Paper 2 Q1 is on Prostitution Law reform.

Then found a 1st year Stats paper.. and the subject area… out of all the possible domains of study of statistical analysis, was Acid Rain.

Indoctrination disguised as learning. No wonder NZ universities are slipping down the global rankings.

The marvels of modern drilling are truly amazing RB, especially when you consider that the drill head is all controlled by a guy sitting in a room with a joystick and can turn the drill on a dime.

What does concern me though, is that if either of these relief wells fail to intersect the flowing well – which is quite possible, considering they are trying to intersect an 8″ dia. well from some distance away. The recent West Atlas explosion in Oz took 5 attempts to intersect! Given one aspect of the discussions that are arising from the Gulf Spill disaster – about intellectual-oratorical intelligence vs. practical intelligence – the following article from the historian Victor Davis Hanson is worth reading. Hanson is both a celebrated history professor and a guy who owns a raisin farm, he has occasionally written of the contrasts of these two worlds.

Obama campaigned on competence and cool. But his technocrats, whether Van Jones, Dr. Chu, Larry Summers, or Eric Holder, are at best academic misfits and at worse simply unfit for executive responsibilities. Harvard Law Review may be of value for suing BP later and demonizing it in the press, and community organizing may be valuable in shaking down BP to clean up, but had only the president run an ACE Hardware store, or at least worked the night shift at Starbucks, he could have had some experience in delegating authority and demanding results from employees, while keeping in mind the bigger picture of economic survival. Right now we are being governed by a GS something, who has no idea where money comes from, but lots of ideas how to blow it. This crisis brings that out.

The left is restless. The shelf life of forbearance is ending. Obama so far has benefited from the liberal desire for power that has trumped even its own green advocacy. (Bush would have been cannibalized for this on second one). But at some point, the pictures from the gulf of dying birds, of oily beaches, of sticky fish will sink polls and so get even to the Malibu crowd. And after they scream at Bush, BP, Palin, hoi polloi for driving Yukons (instead of Lexus and Volvo SUVs), they are only left with Obama to blame.

You should read the whole thing, but especially note the following:

The spill is a foreign relations metaphor and a dangerous one at that. Right now, Hamas, Iran, North Korea, Russia, Syria, the Taliban, Turkey, Venezuela, and a host of others are testing us, three-quarters of them convinced (after 18 months of good evidence) that Obama either will not or cannot or knows not how to deter them all from making regional “adjustments.”

When they see his polls fall during the Gulf crisis, and his tepid reaction to it, they by extension ponder whether another Gaza flotilla, another sinking South Korean ship, another Taliban offensive, another Syrian-Hezbollah missile sale, another slap at Eastern Europe, or another border incursion into Colombia might win the same sort of speech that we saw last night.

Predation in nature naturally requires prey. For the overclass, that is the underclass. Emerging from the shadows, having always been there, they’re called, in our instance here in New Zealand, polynesians (inclusive of maori). You may not have heard or seen us cos we pretty much keep to ourselves, dont tend to make a big fuss about shit and dont get much media coverage apart from when we do something bad, excel at sports or sing for our suppers as entertainers.

36″ casing to 5500 feet…!!!

You might be able to work out how far away they are from the original well from the diagram I referenced above.

Who knows, you might even realise that Turkey’s recent trending towards Iran is seen by Arab Muslims as less a wonderful realignment of Islam than a traditional threat from the Ottoman and Persian empires.

But that would break your standard, tub-thumping narrative, and what fun would that be for you (or us).

A joint commission is recommending lifting the ban on harvesting polar bears for traditional and cultural purposes in Russia.

The U.S.-Russia Polar Bear Commission met this week in Anchorage to determine the potential for a coordinated and sustainable subsistence harvest of polar bears by Native peoples of Alaska and Chukotka in Russia. The commission determined that the harvest should be limited to up to 58 polar bears a year, with no more than 19 being females.

Hmmmm, I wonder if Polar Bear tastes like chicken?

The Government owns a quarter of Christchurch International Airport Ltd, and half of Dunedin International Airport Ltd, with the local city councils holding the balance.

A report in the Otago Daily Times today says Ngai Tahu would like to buy the Government's stakes, but says the Government has no immediate plans to sell. Ngai Tahu has first and second rights to buy Government assets in the South Island, and the newspaper says it already owns the Christchurch and Dunedin police station buildings. It will also be half-owner of the new building in Christchurch to house Christchurch City's vast staff under spendaholic mayor Sideshow Bob Parker.

You can bet the airport stakes will be high on the list of state assets that Bro. Key would flog off if voters let him.

I don’t discipline myself on what I eat. I eat the fattest food on earth, like briskets and lamb flaps (popular with us islanders). I mostly get wasted at the weekends and drink lots of alcohol. However, I have a very good physique, ie, triangular upper body (similar physique to that of Rodney So’oalo, but more muscular than him because I lift very heavy weights in the gym), I weigh 110 kg, and my height is about 1.86 m tall. Some people need to discipline in their diets and watch what they eat (if they don’t exercise), but those who are fit and exercise regularly, eating is open season. Eat everything and anything, because you won’t gain weight.

I’ve searched everywhere for this information. Its extremely difficult for me to believe that the BOP would not close. The gas influx (or pressurized oil) would have taken some time to travel from the bottom of the well, and all this time it would have been pushing the fluid in the well out, and this should have been seen or detected by monitoring equipment.

Even given the extreme pressure of the influx, it would have to have taken a fair while to reach the surface. Even then, the BOP should still have been capable of being shut.

I don’t know. I suspect that the gas (that could have come from an isolated burp) exploded before the main blow out, and there was nobody to operate the BOP when the full stream of gas and oil actually started flowing from deeper depths.

Redbaiter…apparently on some doco a couple weeks ago a ‘Deepwater horizon’ survivor said, an essential rubber sealing bush that closes around the pipe was damaged when someone withdrew 5 metres of it while it was locked off and consequently when they tried to stop the flow it just blew out.

but that was after Halliburton didn’t let the concrete stoppers in the drill shaft set properly when they flushed out the shaft for all the drilling gunk they put into equalize the pressure from the oil and gas below.

Kris, Stephen Joyce said on Friday’s Morning Report that the Waitangi Tribunal’s decision on that was not a legal basis for arguing that rights exist. Basically meaning, it’s not going to happen. That’s a good thing. The precedent set otherwise is that earth itself becomes a taonga and requires a tax, as does the moon, the stars because they bought our ancestors here, etc. Fuck that.

As I understand it, the DWH explosion was primarily caused by the mixing of seawater with the drilling mud. This lightened the mud allowing gas to come onboard with the returned mud and tailings. The gas then ignited in the washroom (where the tailings is removed from the mud), causing the subsequent explosion onboard.

At this time the there was a loss of control of the drilling mud, causing the blowout, however, the blowout should have been of course prevented, by the blowout-proventor-valve.

I also understand that this valve had been faulty previously and had been serviced – why it failed again, we may never know.

Through my contacts, I have tried to find out where/why/who-by the decision was made to mix seawater with the mud. Nobody seems to know, but I would assume this would be a decision taken by Halliburton as operator.

What I have never been able to understand is, why there was no Methanol injection used on the first containment dome. Whenever starting an oil well up we use MeOH to start the flow of oil, as the heavy-end hydrocarbons will freeze in the flowline, due to the JT effect of the expanding (de-pressurising) gas as it enters the flowline from the christmas tree etc.

However, I understand their original containment dome was a very simple structure with only one connection, which was the connection to return the oil to the surface. Of course, with the gas depressurising as it exited the ruined BOPV, the heavy-ends were going to crystallise and block up their dome exit port. Why did they not have another connection and pump MeOH down into the dome to make the oil flow up through the nominal exit?

There may have been reasons behind this that caused wiser heads than me to exclude doing this. Hence I would be interested to know.

Okay. From what I can see of your thinking (and I use that word with reluctance) – your take is that Turkey is re-aligning with the rest of the Islamic world and you are rubbing your hands with childish glee at the prospect of Israel/The West taking on Turkey militarily.

What I am attempting to point out to you is that a large chunk of the Middle Eastern Islamic world – primarily the Arab nations – are not too happy at the prospect of a new Ottoman empire uniting with a new Persian empire. The reason they’re not too happy is that the latter has always regarded itself as superior and attempted to control or manipulate the Arabs in the best colonial traditions, while the former actually did.

The Arabs take a rather long-term and cultural view of such things: the fact that we now talk of stand-alone nations like Turkey and Iran means far less to them than that both countries lay at the core of the old Ottoman and Persian empires, and that both modern countries still hanker after their ancient imperial glories.

Reid, the foreshore, what a bloody mess.
OK as a Maori I see things this way, we have people ranting that it would be wrong to have ownership in Maori hands, but at the same time politicians of their skin tone are stating it would be wrong to overturn fee simple titles that some Pakeha hold on the Foreshore.
One law for all ?

As a kiwi I would prefer this answer, all the Foreshore to be in the Crown’s hands and fee simple titles to be moved over to 999 year pepper corn leases of say a dollar a year plus rates of course, but ,the leaseholders would have no rights to stop people going on their beaches etc.

Will they do that, hell no, there are lawyer’s rice bowls to be kept full.

Yes Red, but remember the explosion happened onboard first. When this happened the whole rig would have lost power/controls, and gone into ESD mode. At this point, all subsea equipment would go to its fail-safe mode, which would, in the case of the BOPV be closed.

I understand that they were getting elevated readings of gas in the mud and knew there was a problem, but whether a pre-set level had been reached to automatically activate the subsea shut-off valves, I don’t know.

“An already relentless melting of the Arctic greatly accelerated this summer, a warning sign that some scientists worry could mean global warming has passed an ominous tipping point. One even speculated that summer sea ice would be gone in five years“.

But one thing I like about Kim is that she doesn’t usually shut people down. And at least her questions allowed for Ayaan to set the record straight in response.

The supposed damage to the annular is a red herring. There is no possible way that that rig would have gone for four weeks without a faulty annular being detected or repaired. Rubber could come from the annular without its performance being affected. There are also blind rams as a back up, or pipe and shear rams.

The whole mystery of this event is why the BOP apparently did not work or more likely, was not activated. There is no way gas could come out to the extent it did and not be detected long before it was sucked into the generator engines.

The BOP is tested regularly and certainly would have been tested many times within a four week period. There is no doubt that it would have been capable of holding pressure, because pressure testing is routine.

These guys are fully trained. They are highly skilled experts. Their own lives depend upon everything working as it should. I cannot believe they would have drilled on with a non functioning annular preventer.

Something happened that was extremely out of the ordinary, or that BOP would have been closed the very instant there was any flow from the well.

I just watched some of the 60 minutes stuff – typically 60 minutes…

Anyway, the most striking thing to me was that lifeboats and liferafts left whilst people were still onboard! As someone who has worked on a number of offshore vessels, this is kinda scary, considering the number of evac. drills we go through.

I appreciate the need to get away from an exploding oil rig, but to even launch the liferaft (only used once the lifeboats have been used) with people still onboard near the liferafts is not something that I could live with. There were some serious procedural fuck-ups in allowing this to happen.

I’m not sure about US regs, but I would assume they are the same as everywhere else, coming under SOLAS, each offshore facility must have a minimum of 2 lifeboats, and one lifeboat has to be capable of taking the entire crew. They also have an FRC (fast rescue craft), used for man-overboard situations, as well as a number of life rafts located strategically around the deck.

I think the “causal factors” are the teachings contained in the Koran and Hadith. And that while Islam may have kept its ‘head down’ in the recent past, certainly since 911 Islam as a whole has generally become more aggressive and direct in expressing its apsirations.

And regarding what I think “the west should be doing strategically that it’s not already, in order to deal with this”, I believe, firstly, that the West needs to acknowledge, and take seriously, the stated aims and intents of Islam as espoused in the Koran, Hadith, and as expressed by current day Islamic religious and state leaders. Once you do that, and come to the realisation that Islam has OPENLY declared war on the non-Muslim world, then you confront it as you would any other agressive and hostile enemy.

Although, with Islam, you additionally need to realise that part of their strategy is “conquest by immigration”, and so you need to deal with this by restricting/eliminating Islamic immigration into Western countries, and you also need to ‘repatriate’ Islamic trouble makers who are already in the West.

I think parts of Europe and the UK are finally waking up to reality regarding uncontrolled Islamic immigration – the question is, are they too late?

Some more intelligent direct experience, as opposed to the sensationalist 60 minutes stuff, of what was possibly the root cause – similar to what I posted above, a mix of seawater and mud not being able to contain the pressure.

I did like his opinion on what the sense was in shutting down all drilling in the GOM: “absolutely no sense whatsoever”.

But it wins the fool in the whitehouse votes tough, and that’s all that matters.

Oh there’s a problem Kris, and it’s growing. I fear your approach however will merely exacerbate the growth. This is because the rise of Islam is very analogous to the 50’s paranoia of the rise of Communism.

Throughout the Cold War there were all sorts of misinterpretations of intent by both sides, many of which were genuinely and reasonably on the evidence held at the time. As history has uncovered the actual facts behind missile counts etc, we have seen that many of those genuinely held beliefs proved to be false and what actually was happening was something else entirely. One repeats history only when one forgets it, and I don’t want the same issue to arise in this coming dynamic.

Your tactic of naming and shaming basically paints the entire Islamic world as a bunch of terrorists. That doesn’t seem to me to be a very wise or justifiable allegation for major western govts to seriously proclaim as official policy.

Your analysis of the issue being inherent in the Koran makes me ask, what about history. Has Islam always had groups that had these beliefs or is your observation that an OBL-like interpretation is a relatively recent phenomena? The oldest one I know of is the Muslim Brotherhood and that’s been around since the early 1950’s I think. So I go for recent phenomena, myself.

Secondly I observe that like everything else, the Koran is just a book, awaiting interpretation. It’s humans that read into it what they do, so I don’t think the Jihaddi attitude is inherent within anything except the person. And of those people who care enough about Jihad to sacrifice their own lives in its pursuit, how many are there as a ratio of the entire Islamic population? I think I’ve asked you that before but you never answered. Just a % figure would be good.

Yeah well, it sounds like the BOP was definitely working, but when they opened it they were caught by surprise by a bubble of gas that had built up behind it while they were testing, and it shot out of the hole too quickly for them to react or close the BOP again, and then this gas bubble exploded, and that was that. I’d guess the emergency closing systems must have been wrecked by the blast. And then with the hydrostatic pressure gone off the well, the oil and gas entered at the bottom and with nothing to stop it, just kept flowing.

Still, even if the gas shot up the riser from 5000 feet, you’d still think you’d have minute or two to close in. (it only takes an instant to actuate the BOP and about 10 seconds for it to close)

Maybe not.

I dunno really. Its still all a bit murky.

Thinking on the exploding gas bubble, I wonder if it was frozen hydrocarbons that boiled off? When they boil off the volume increases exponentially, usually creating some pretty hairy moments for drilling crews.

Although, considering it was actually a completed well, but not yet flowing, this may not have been the case. I dunno either. I’m starting to sound like those speculating ignoramuses you mentioned earlier Red!

A few years ago some friends of mine were doing research drilling near Guam, and they were encountering frozen cores of methane, that were boiling off in the drill stem and blowing everything back out – not somewhere I would want to be when that happens.

@NOt1tocommentoften – Yes quite aware of what jurisprudence is, but thank you for asking.

Apparently the lecturer in question spent more time expounding the virtue of both pieces of legislation, rather than encouraging critical thought from the students.

My contention was, and remains that the topic was used as a platform to convey the lecturer’s own philosophical views. And it was a rather pinko-social-liberal philosophy presented to students who are uniformly keen to pass his course. That is indoctrination IMO.

Even going to the extent of attacking with the object of replacing the “Governor” with an elder brother living in exile, who had promised to accede to all the wishes of the United States. Makes one think as history repeats, as with OBL, but do we understand it?
