The Maori team is selected on the players traditional and indigenous ties to the land through ancestry/whakapapa. The mana is what they bring as individuals and representative of their iwi and add to the cultural heritage. Maori arent a ‘race’ anymore than Pasifikans are.

The allblacks are the NZ residents team, not even indigenous and not even eligible to NZers outside of NZ.

FWIW i’d like to see a totally black sth african team as well.

I understand your point, there’s got to be a threshold and we might all set it differently. My point is that when an issue like this gathers momentum, it can be appropriate for the PM to comment. In this case, I think the PMs comments were measured and appropriate. Haden’s a RWC ambassador, McCully’s the Minister, he should tell Haden to stop being a dork… not that I think it’s within Haden’s capacity frankly.

BB, I’m not getting into this with you mate, I think the comments had a racist intent and tone, more so his latest comments. I despise racism and think racists need to be confronted directly and immediately.

That’s a fair call IV2. As an aside, over the last decade or so I’ve noticed PM’s increasingly wading into commentary on all sorts of daily events that really don’t demand their attention.

Perhaps their eagerness to grace us with their glorious presences on the telly is clouding their understanding of the difference between governance vs management.

JohnB and Manalo; It his noticeable that the post subjects have been downgraded of late, which is somewhat unfortunate as they are plenty of subjects for legitimate discussion. Its become so and then like today there’s nothing of any substance to comment on.
This then leads on to the ultimate degradation of Gen Debate. which admittedly can be rapid the moment someone mentions religion.
So for today the children on a wet day have commented on Key defending himself, beating up on Hayden (ok I would say) and slagging one another off.
Not the kiwiblog it was before the election when issues raised the ire and discussion was robust.

What a strange mob is emerging to back Andy Haden on his claims about the Crusaders. Mad, lost, idle Philu sides with Big Bruv here on Kiwiblog. On TTVNZ1’s Close Up, Sainsbury’s stand in, today with almost bouffant hair, was joined by a sports commentator with a mild but distracting resemblance to the famous word smith Oscar Wilde in physique and in hair and skin colour. They batted for Haden’s selection.

The proportion of Pacific Islanders in the Crusaders is higher than the proportion of Pacific Islanders in the upper South Island, the home base of the Crusaders. The proportion of Pacific Island and Maori players in the Crusaders is higher than the proportion of these ethnic groups in the upper South Island population. Though with the high rate of intermarriage in the south (at least one Ngai Tahu leader is fair headed with blue eyes), differentiating Maori from Pakeha becomes increasingly difficult and meaningless.

Haden and Co. are the ones who are racist on this issue, IMHO. The implied corollary to what Haden and Co. say about the Crusaders, easily the country’s most successful regional rugby team, is that it is successful because it restricts the number of non-white players. This, of course, is nonsense and is untrue. The Crusaders don’t restrict the number of non-white players. A startling, even disturbing, look at our “justice” system.

A comment I have to make is that, if Peter Ellis was heterosexual, he would never have gone to jail.

Nick – when reading a book like that remember that the author sets out to prove their hypothesis. If Hood had wanted to prove Ellis guilty she would have used different information to do so.

To an extent Michael, but the book is heavily detailed and does refer to (the few) points of evidence that were adverse to him- the fact of the matter is our justice system imprinsoned an innocent man for a decade

OMG, where does one start? Firstly, the content of his letter. Obfuscation and lies, the US does not want to invade North Korea and risk World War 3 with the Chinese (China will not tolerate US or South Korea occupying North Korea and thus have them at their very back door step, such a move would provoke a major Chinese response. Plus the US through its folly in Iraq does not have the resources to let alone even occupy North Korea even if it wanted to. Incidentally this also explains why China tolerates the North Korean regime, NK is a convenient buffer zone).

Anyway the jist of Don Borrie’s propaganda is to cast doubt that it wasn’t a North Korean torpedo (launched from a NK mini-sub) that sank the South Korean corvette the Cheonan. However an international investigation team, which sure, included US and Australian investigators, but also included Swedish investigators – why the hell would the Swedish bullshit & midlead the international community etc – have reportedly found fragments of a known North Korean torpedo in and around the sunken ship.

JK, sorry I probably was so wild that I wasn’t making sense in respect to what I meant by ‘traitor’. Traitor as in traitor to the betterment of mankind/humankind (what ever one wishes to call it etc). Why do we try and bother making society better, democratic (and fairer etc) when people like this guy and his agenda are working against it, sigh?
