Even after drinking a whole bottle of Glenmorangie Nectar D’Or you won’t be able to see that.
Why? Simply because English and Key lack the courage for drastic reform.

They have done little over the past 18 months to indicate this time is different, other than punishing us with more taxes (which these lying politicians have the cheek to call “neutral”). They have persisted with failed Labour policies knowing full well our country cannot afford them.

Federated Farmers have estimated that the introduction of the ETS this year will cost business and families $527 million and this is only the start. I’m no fan of journalism these days and yes it does seem a bit of a cheap trick, but its not exactly irrelevant to show the story of a person in power who is benefiting from laws that they themselves are setting… It’s also true that there’s a lot of people in the opposite group — those who will lose as a result of the changes and have little personal power to change them.

a woman I work with was on Campbell live last night re the 20 hours “free” child care thing.
Now, one of them said how great is was and it’s worth $250-$300 a week to her. She would rather forgo her upcoming tax cut AND pay a little more to keep this racket going .. how bloody generous she is with my money.
I have already ranted about having 3 kids under 5 on 1 full income subisdised my my wife working nights at either Cobb & Co or an Old Folks Home to make ends met while paying a mortgage rate of 18-20%.
I was yelling at her throufgh the telly to harden the fuck up and everytime I see those socialist labour/green pricks on telly telling me how hard done by her lot are gives me the shits.

Its like a cart, being drawn by workers. In the cart are the sludge of humanity. Racists and bludgers and various other tit sucking vermin. The problem in NZ is that the number of hauliers is getting less and less and less, and the number of riders is growing and growing and growing. As the cart gets heavier from the dead weight of the bludgers, and the hauliers grow less, it gets slower and slower, and eventually it will grind to a halt.

One day, we’ll just have to cut the vermin loose, let em haul their own fucking cart, and every day, that time gets closer and closer. I can feel it getting very close right now. As the anger grows. The anger that should have been there a decade or so ago.

Your jealousy and nastiness is becoming a little bit tedious, eh? And don’t try to tell me you’re not jealous when just about every second comment from you is about how other people have money and you trying to tell them to give it to you / others.

It is SO easy to upskill and get a job. You could do it all for yourself. Imagine the satisfaction of not being a helpless dependant on people like me, bruv and all the other tax payers and actually being able to contribute something to help other New Zealanders.

During the debate on tax the other day I posted a couple of pieces dealing with what I felt were the real problems in NZ. That they were rooted in our modern culture and therefore could be affected only marginally by changes in tax rates and the like.

But given the sturm and drang here about producers and takers I thought that the following two links might provide an interesting angle.

The first is from the Wisconsin Law Prof Ann Althouse, and it looks at an old NYT article from the early 1970’s that she came across a couple of months ago while researching for one of her classes. The NYT article focuses on Abby Hoffman and the hippie communes and their – ahem – attitudes towards society. The article is appropriately titled Ripping Off, The New Lifestyle.

As you read it remember that this thinking arises around the time that the likes of our modern left-wing came of age, including several who comment here. Some key quotes from the piece include:

The Best Things in Life Are Free — If You Steal Them From the Bourgeoisie.”

“We want a society where your birth certificate is your passport, and everything is free.”

“There’s no longer any distinction between political dissent and deviant behavior…. The two are becoming one, and obviously the merger is going to lead to strategies that are traditionally considered criminal.”

By contrast, read this piece from the History Prof, Victor Davis Hanson, in which he reflects upon the people who built the small town of Kingsburg, California.. Key quote from the piece:

They certainly did not have the oil wealth of Libya. There were not the picturesque coastline and islands of Greece. Little coal, bauxite, or any precious minerals were to be found. The land was arid, and mostly empty. Swedes are not generally associated with 100-degree summers. The answer in a word was quiet competence and work. Work for the sake of work, or in Hesiod’s parlance, “work on top of work on top of work”.

And from the comments:

The prospect of having him off the public tit and having to drag his drug infested ass off to work before he qualifies for the pension is one I relish.

He keeps claiming he couldn’t work as he needs to care for his son, but that didn’t stop him spending time studying for a BA received in 1996, and then for an MA with Second Class Honours Second Division in Political Studies received in 2009.

If he can study, he can work.

It’s a double edged sword, RRM. Any publicity just reignites the “he wouldn’t have been arrested if he wasn’t guilty of something” brigade (ironically usually the same people who refuse to accept an innocent person is ever found guilty).

If I’d had name suppression, as Leary apparently did, and was found not guilty I’d want it to continue, because the world is full of knuckle-draggers who’ll try to smear people with whom they disagree.

On the other hand, Rex, jails are chockful of people who reckon they are innocent.

As for the knuckle draggers, I reckon the Mr Asia mob were as murderous a bunch of knuckle draggers as you would ever find. Which side of the bars knuckle draggers are on is a matter of opinion.
