Had an e-mail today from friends in Indiana — it’s six feet of snow outside in their street. And it had looked as if the worst of the winter had passed.

Clearly these people had forgotten to change their clocks at Nov 30 from “Global Warming”, to “Climate Change”. The same mistake is often made in reverse, in the Southern Hemisphere.

February is traditionally a very cold month in the US, lots of snow. This one really was exceptional, though.

Yes, it is colder than usual in some parts of the northern hemisphere, and warmer than usual in others. Alaska and northern Canada are 5-10C warmer than the average for this time of year, so are North Africa and the Mediterranean. The cold and the warmth could be related: the contrasting temperatures appear to be connected to blocks of high pressure preventing air flow between the land and the sea.

This is called weather, and, believe it or not, it is not always predictable and it changes quite often. It is not the same as climate, and single events are not the same as trends. Is this really so hard to understand?

A friend of mine in Vancouver isn’t in agreement with that news. He said it’s fricken cold, colder than usual. But hey what would he know, he’s there and not a politician so how could he speak with any authority.

Edit: Well that is what he said last time I talked to him about 3 weeks ago. Will check again – sending email now.

Thanks for proving my point Burt. 14 days isn’t a trend my friend. Neither is the warmest January ON RECORD as has just occured at Cypress Mountain one of the venues for the games.

The point was, weather and climate are 2 different things.

Get your small brain around that fact and you might begin to work out why record snow falls in Washington DC does not necessarily dissprove the fact that global warming is occuring.

We’ve entered Solar Cycle 24. This change occurs at a solar minimum, and effectively means we can expect colder winters from now on (for next wee while anyway), until the solar activity increases again. Some argue the sun is forcing the observed effects of climate change in the last decade – as it always has in history, and that manmade CO2 is not responsible for climate change. However, the physics of CO2 H2O and CH4 in the atmosphere are understood and the CO2 has increased markedly since the industrial age. It stands to reason there is some effect – the question is – is it enough to force significant climate change? And is that climate change necessarily “a bad thing” (TM)?

It seems to me that this a major contributor to the observations we refer to as “climate change”.

FYI, the maunder minimum coincided with the “Little ice age”:

But cause and effect are not well understood. “Correlation does not equal causation”. Consequently there is still debate as to whether or not Sunspot activity is responsible for climate change.

“Weather isn’t the same as climate” gfrom the people that blamed a hurricane on “climate change” during a season when there less hurricanes than previously and meanwhile the climate has gotten warmed.

Give it a week or two and Al gore will be saying that CO2 causes “Global Cooling!” and they’ve checked their figures this time but we all need to buy carbon credits from just the same.
