So what’s causing that disunity, in your opinion?
And why do you have a problem if Maori are persuing what they believe is rightfully theirs? Or do you think that the FSA is a good thing after all?

I think Fran is spot on. There are not many circumstances where financial exploitation is not the driving maori motive in any claims. The concept is nothing new, I understand in 1880 local maori used to charge visitors 1 pound each to visit the pink and white terraces, not a small sum in those days

Fran O’Sullivan is spot on.
As regards that charging; I am still choking over the extortionate $127 for my brother , my wife and I to visit Mount Tarawera. I insisted on a tax invoice that showed the recipient’s name. It was a company run by a man with a Maori name. He lived in Ngongotaha. His company had changed its name on three occasions.

There is no focus on NZ as a nation it is all about one aspect. NZ is multi-cultural not mono or bi cultural. A National Day should be unifying and celebratory of the whole of our cultures not just one aspect. The spectacle of John Key escorted by Titewhai and harangued by Hone is not unifying.

The focus on mare based events is not healthy.

Regarding the Fran O’Sullivan piece, she points out how this is an attempt by an elite not the people as a whole. Furthermore it would seem some wish to have powers to restrict access to the foreshore

Funny to see in the Herald one property investor complaining about how changing the depreciation rules will reduce his income. Since when has a tax refund been considered income?

Explains the mentality of those who get into the property game and then can’t work out why then need to pump in extra cash each week and lose money.

Went to the Catlins (South Otago Coast) last weekend for the first time in about 15 plus years.

Found out Cathedral Cove (highlighted in all the tourist books as a must do) now has a locked gate, entrance rules and you need to pay a “fee”. This used to be free and public access until the Govt in their infinite wisdom gave it to Ngai Tahu.

Shouldn’t natural landmarks be protected and free access for all?

Also if Ngai Tahu was to be really honest did any Maori actually ever live in the Catlins (before the roads were built)? I suspect not.

It’s free to access the beach at Cathedral Cove. You have to pay to access it via a maintained track through private land – I’ve done it and thought it worthwhile, the caves are amazing, well worth a look.

The first people known to live in the Catlins, Māori of the Kāti Mamoe, Waitaha, and Kāi Tahu iwi, merged via marriage and conquest into the iwi now known as Kāi Tahu. Archaeological evidence of human presence dates back to AD 1000. The area’s inhabitants were semi-nomadic, travelling from Stewart Island/Rakiura in the south and inland to Central Otago. They generally dwelt near river mouths for easy access to the best food resources.

One reason for restricting access is that it’s only safe to be on the beach two hours either side of low tide.

Paying the mowree for access is nothing new.
20 or more years ago I fished the Taupo area. Pay for license fine, pay ramp permit fine, but pay another fee to fish on Lake Rotoira?.
Why? Stocked with the same fish that you pay your license fee for. These are not native fish just Rainbow Trout.
Seems like mowree want their own public tit to suck on.

Have any of you guys wondered about how on this good old righty blog (unoffical Nat party they say) you never get a comment from our glorious leaders wot we voted for.

Does not matter what we say about Bills double dipping or Nevilles double dealing with the Mory. Its as if we don’t exist for them. They never turn up here to argue their point.

Now say what you like about the old knuckle dragger Trev (and he is merciless about banning people who disagree on his blog) but to my knowledge he has fronted up here a few times to try and justify his pathetic politics.

I hate to say it but I suspect that Trev has bigger balls than our own glorious leader. Shit I hated to say that.

I like to think we keep them honest (at least indirectly) by informing the electorate. As we know; many more read here, than do comment.
I do hope DPF brings back the karma buttons as this was an extremely important (the only) way for non commenters to participate.

But I agree; our “glorious leaders” do appear to lack any form of testicular fortitude.

I hear that the Honourable(possibly) Mayor of Auckland now whishes to steal the Sevens from Wellywood.
I can understand that after all he could give it to the ARA to make further losses for Auckland.
Of course they could hold it in their new stadium which the other 3 million of us taxpayers are paying for.
What is it with these jaffa’s.
They screw up everything they do, they steal daily from the rest of us, mostly they are unable to organise a piss up in a brewery, they are mostly lefties and they want the rest of us to give them more. Question; is John Banks Maori?

That’s not a choke bruv, just the ebb and flow of sevens. Those games can swing on a couple of mistakes. NZ are still top of the table, not half way through the series.

Great final, Fiji just hold out Samoa. We can’t win all the time.

It was blindingly obvious that the more I presented researched facts along with informed comment, the more my negative karma built up.

I viewed it as a badge of honour.

And a sad indication of how emotion and prejudice generally hold the floor.

Bruv, sevens is quite a a different game to 15-a-side. It has an international global tournament every year. I always want NZ to win, but mostly don’t mind when they do lose. That’s part of sport, it needs uncertainty to be enjoyed.

Last night Samoa just missed out on clawing back Fiji in a great final – it’s good to see small nations competing well against large ones. And in the plate final Australia pipped South Africa (who have truly multiracial teams at sevens) with a brilliant last minute play by a 19 year old.

The reason I no longer support NZ teams when it comes to rugby (and enjoy it immensely when they lose) is down to the way so many Kiwis rugby people react to teams from Aussie and England.

Cheering every time Aussie lose, or throwing bottles at their players is nothing short of barbaric. The way we react as a nation whenever the All Blacks lose is pathetic, we are the Rugby worlds biggest moaners and hypocrites.

Forget all this talk of becoming a republic or changing the flag, when (and that day is a long way off) we actually mature enough to understand that our nations credibility does not start and stop with a rugby team the better, while we are at it, we could also stop worrying about what the rest of the world says or thinks about us.

In short, we just have to grow up!

I agree with that. Spectator “sportmanship” is sadly lacking. I hate the crowd booing so much, it sounds boorish, and removes the effect when it is actually deserved.

And the reaction of “fans” to losses is pathetic. I’ve been disappointed by losses, especially in world cups (but in knockout that’s how it works) – but more disappointed by the stupid anger that follows. If we dumped the coaches whenever called for by “the public” we would be getting very short of coaches.

Losses are an essential part of sport. My son played schoolboy rugby and was disappointed one day after losing. I pointed at a ground where there were a number of games being played and explained that, for just about every game, there had to be a losing team. He understood that.

Big Bruv I don’t disagree with you completely re the NZ rugby public and their pathetic attitude although I don’t cheer when they lose – I am after all a New Zealand sports fan.

I will point out though that the words “rugby” and “seven” should never be seen together and far from being “another big tournament” except for the social occasion this tournament struggles to get up to “minor”.

This makes this team remarkable.

Every other South African team in world sport is selected purely on racist grounds, a point driven home recently when the SA cricket coach was sacked for wanting to replace a dropped (and retiring) black player with the next best player available instead of a black player of lesser ability.

You seem to confuse sport and politics.

In sport there are winners and losers, one person against others, one team against others.

In democracies the aim is for common good, not for some extreme team of one to force your way on everyone else. The best leaders and the best governments draw people together, not divide and conk out as you try.

In rugby parlance RB, you act like a fullback staying behind the dead ball line hoping the forwards will pass you the ball so you can puncture it.

It’s hard to be sure but it seems like that to me. South Africa have become stronger at sevens while their proportion of blacks playing has increased.

Look at the strongest teams (order on the current table): NZ (mostly Polynesian), Fiji, Samoa, England (several afro-poms), Australia (with Polynesians), Kenya, South Africa
