Neither do we today, Boxing Day holiday is actually on Monday this year……an anachronism from the past….in the modern world Saturday is just another day, time for the holiday to fall on the actual date of the holiday not carry over.

Boxing day is also not a holiday in South Australia, however Proclaimation day (the 27th) is.

The correct date of Proclamation Day is December 28th. Until a few years back it was always celebrated as such, however in (I think) late 1990’s was moved to Dec 26 for the holiday in order to mesh with rest of Aus. Celebrations are still held at the Old Gum Tree on Dec 28 and at Holdfast Bay.

Alternatively ring up WINZ and tell them that you no longer need the computer and internet connection that you got from them with a special grant and start saving $1 a week from your ill deserved bludger benefit to help pay for your living expenses in a year’s time when you get cut off, and cannot re-apply to due to your limited english skills.
At least when Whaleoil has a go at someone he does it with a measure of wit and more often than not his attacks contain a fair element of truth.
As to your question posed above; a dole bludger and sicness beneficiary are both drains on the tax payer. Are you only one or both?

Not true. I have posted there, go take a look, and the fat ugly one has on more than one occasion threatened me with physical violence. However, when I offered to pay his airfare to Chch for a meet up, he did what whales do, and went to water.

Here in NZ we get 4 statutory days off during Christmas: Christmas day, Boxing Day, New years Day, and the day after New years day. If any of them fall on a weekend they get transferred to the next weekday. (I used to do wages for a company).

Kiwi’s already know this anyway, so just putting up the info for any interested readers from overseas 🙂

Lots of people rip off insurance companies. Often the insurance companies won’t pursue it, they just gradually ramp up everyone’s premium. Just as our tax gets lost on the Harris’s, on the ANZ/ASB/Westpac/BNZ banks, on the “human crime waves” and others who make our papers. So there’s really no difference, except the government will do less to try to disprove a person’s depression and will give some benefit of the doubt.

The hard-core right-wingers will state that private enterprise is more efficient, but when a company gets to be enormous (like the multinational insurance firms) its inefficiencies will rival any government’s. Many of the private “efficiencies” are unjust (for instance dismissing whole claims for minor omissions of health background).

In all justness, hopefully whaleoil ‘wins’ his courtcase about name suppression, but loses his battle to keep his pay and has to resume working a real job.

and saturday isnt just another day. the majority of people have the day off. the holiday should be carried over to the monday. aussie do it with their public holidays. arent we trying to catch up to them? why push ourselves further away.

and goddam i drank a lot of vodka last night!! thumbs up to the pilot brother who keeps my bar stocked with glorious duty free liquor 🙂

As we sit here replete with a full belly surrounded by friends and family having had a lovely relaxing time together, looking forward to an afternoon and evenings of games and cards, I can’t help thinking how fortunate I am and that there are millions who live in danger and turmoil.

dime, the Boxing Day holiday actually falls on this coming Monday, because today is a Saturday. This means that the restaurants who are charging an extra 15% on their prices for their staff to work on a holiday are ripping the public off; in fact, today is just a Saturday (as far as employment goes) and not a statutory holiday (no matter what One News says). The news says they also plan to do this again on New years.

Of course, if they plan to charge normal prices on Monday to make up for it…..

Fletch, wrong again.

TODAY is the Boxing Day holiday for anyone who normally works on a Saturday. Thus Jo Seagar’s Cafe in Oxford is closed today, open Monday, as they never open on a Stat day.

So, maybe, just maybe, someone at One has a better understanding of the Holidays Act that your good self.

As to cahrging 15%, don’t get me going, but WHY are certain hospitallity owners so stupid they cannot price to take holidays in to account? No other business group finds it necessary to charge extra on a stat day.

Because the cost of labour for food outlets generally runs at 20-40%. If the cost of labour is increased by 1.5 times, this percentage is now 30-60% (assuming steady revenues, which only happens if some outlets are closed).

Why are you so stupid as to assume that small business’ run with 10-20% of fat in their prices?

I would hazard a guess that maybe 50% of small food outlets including cafes and restaurants do not run at any significant profit (annually, not just holidays)

A brief rebuttal to MikeNZ @ 2.11pm

First item: Mike talks about world peace, then quotes an article by that New York madman Thomas Freidman who, aside from giving the lie to the view that the well travelled is the broadminded amongst us, calls for a murderous war between Muslims, at a similar level of ferocity to the US Civil War.

Great. Just what we need for peace, more war. Good one Mike.

Second item: Mike alleges all the troublemakers in the world just HATE democracy – you know, those pesky troublemaking bastards who demand their human rights, like the right to live their lives free from foreign physical or economic colonisation, including and these days especially US oppression and brutality.

And Mike kindly provides a link to a supposedly genuine Iranian militia member who has seen the error of his ways. Excuse me if, while admitting I would not like to be a citizen of Iran with their theocratic rulers (let alone their former US sponsored dictator, who was even worse!) I take all that with a grain of salt. The context of the link is to demonise Iranians. Good work if you can get it, but what’s the point?

Oh, I know, nuke the bastards to save them, right?

Third item: just Mike reinforcing what a threat a Middle East country with a mid-last century military and a per capita income even below New Zealand’s (we are just over 1/2 of the US) at less than 1/4 of the US. And a population about 1/5 of the US. Yet this country, yes, Iran again, of course, relatively small and impoverished, definitely not developed in the western sense, is somehow a huge, imminent, clear and present danger to the US and the west. Ha ha ha.

Fourth item: of course, Mike just can’t resist this one. Mike says: we gotta draw the line! We gotta make a stand!

What Mike is talking about is this: the sixth or seventh most powerful military force in the world, with 2-300 undeclared nukes, exists under constant existential threat from the poor, militarily insignificant indigenous people dispossessed by those European invaders who even have the audacity to claim to be the ancestral kith and kin of those they have killed and dispossessed and continue to kill and dispossess and oppress.

I know. Laughable, isn’t it. But perhaps not to those continuing to resist the last great European colonialist enterprise.

And of course, it’s OK for the good guys and ladies of Israel to promise to use maximum force against all and sundry, men women and children, but for the Iranians to do the same, well, it just proves how evil they are, doesn’t it?

Doesn’t it?

Trev the muss is jubilant at the failure of another business and even happier that he has a very big part in its downfall, check out the sneering comments and glee as Trev basks in the financial failure of some poor bastard who was doing nothing more than exercising his rights.

Proving once again that Labour (and Trev in particular) are thugs who will go to any lengths to destroy those who dare speak out against them.
