The change in the climate appears to be one towards extremes and unusual, whether we are warming or cooling will become apparent in time.
One of the problems with unusual events is that the truely efficient equipment which would have dealt with this little dump are not available becuase “it never happens” until it does. I heard a road supervisor saying the snow overwhelmed their equipment. Plus I know from driving my long gone Standard 15 van in far worse conditions, much deeper snow than this, is not really a problem if you are the first one through, it is the packing down that causes problems for subsequent users. At this time of the year when bad weather is forecast I carry chains in my baby SUV when going out of town … but then baby SUVs have proved superior to the heavy monstrosities, that we saw being hauled out on TV, at 4WD events.

Where I live beside the seaside beside the sea I put light chains in the car boot soon after easter and remove them about Labour weekend. I am not feeling smug, it is my insurance as we have to go to around 380 meters between here and our major city. It is amazing what the precaution does to Murphy and his stinking law. What an amazing weather event and much better viewed from afar, sympathies to those caught in it

FFS, the central plateau is well known for it’s unpredictable and unseasonable weather and I’ve always wondered why people don’t or won’t spend a $100 or so on a set of chains and keep them in the boot.

^^^ because chains are heavy and bulky, a hundred dollars is a lot of money, and a just-in-case set of chains in the boot seems a little OTT for a road with a potential snow zone you can normally cross in well under half an hour, that is only ever snowbound for a few freak days per year. Not worth a $100 set of chains IMHO.

The North Island is not alpine territory, there is always another way around via the low road if you really REALLY have to travel RIGHT NOW. I’ve always wondered why people don’t just catch the radio news if it’s looking dodgy ahead, and go the long way around if need be. If there’s a storm on the desert road you can usually see it from hundreds of km away.

Even if you had chains and the show wasn’t so deep that your car became a snow plough, you’d still need to get past all the other idiots.

Especially the ones who think their “4×4” actually drives via all four wheels.

I rang the Transport department’s 0800 number on Monday morning from Hastings.
Is Highway Five closed? yes it is.
Can I get to Te Pohue? Is that on Highway Five? Yes it is. Then you cannot get there as Highway Five is closed.
Can I get to Eskdale which is on Highway Five?
“No” says the imbecilic woman at the Transport Dept, “because Highway Five is closed.
This astounded me as I think Eskdale is less than 30 metres altitude.
Sure enough, the road was open as far as Eskdale.
It seems a pity that our public service includes so many people with so little, if any, knowledge of the very basic geography that I learnt in the fourth form.
