In many other countries, stabbing someone 216 could not constitute manslaughter. When is New Zealand going to look at “Degrees of Murder”?

Siobhan – in any country that retains the outdated defence of provocation this is certainly the case! Why do you think we need degrees of murder in NZ?

This is the American’s water cooler, the smokers’ bench on the steps, the place you can always get a scrap if you feel like one, or a laugh if you want that, too.

It’s also a bit like the Bedlam asylum, where they locked up the mentally ill centuries ago. It was open to public visitors. We can stroll into Kiwiblog and look at the loonies like Sonic/Chronic.

Some might suggest if they want it asked they should pay for it to be asked.

$30 dollars each from the 300,000 people who signed the petition isn’t that much if they really believe in it.

NOt1tocommentoften – I think that degrees of murder will allow more clearly defined sentencing for clearly defined crimes. They have a multitude of definitions for assault, yet when someone is killed it is murder or manslaughter.

siobhan – there is some merit in degrees of murder – this is true. If the current Government hadn’t come in and scrapped the idea of having sentencing guidelines this would have gone a long way in aleviating this issue and more importantly, would have gone a long way in solving more signigficant issues around inconsistency of sentences.

Anyone hear Brian Edwards on Radio New New Zealand (aka Radio South Seas Socialism) feigning disbelief that the SIS had a file on him? Comrade Edwards tried really really hard to sound disgusted, outraged … but every now and then throughout his pleading rant one could ‘feel’ his smile of self congratulation.

Has anyone read about the Parliamentary Commissioner for the Environment on power meters:

1. Anyone with an electronics background able to tell us how sensible this environmental scientist’s comments are?
How many years before appliances switch on and off to tap cheap electricity? What of safety — eg clothes-dryers switching on automatically and running from 3am to 5am?

2. The office itself. This woman and her staff report directly to Parliament: they aren’t answerable to Ministers, and are really just information only. Is this just another Labour bureaucratic layer?
