David Carter should be fired. NZ has to rid its parliament of numb nutted left wing jerkoffs who cannot distinguish between truth and fiction, and because of this, are prepared to waste taxpayer resources investigating issues that arise because of the actions of a desperate discredited organisation, (the NZ mainstream media and TVNZ in particular) and the liars, zealots and propagandists who are part of the anti farm lobby,(SAFE) and the self serving publicity stunts of so called entertainers, washed up fast fading losers seeking publicity (Mike King).

It is a disgrace that Carter has showed demonstrated this degree of political immaturity and poor judgment, in a move that will only encourage the deranged zealots and their mainstream media cohorts responsible to greater efforts. It will also provide Mike King with an aura of undeserved authenticity.

Shame on National and shame on Carter.

They have betrayed the Agricultural sector who elected them.

They have acted no different from Labour and really, the people who voted for a change of government in this country deserve better than to have more gormless collectivist fools who act little differently from the people they grew so heartily sick of over the last 9 years.

This whole incident was a manufactured fraud, the work of poseurs, narcissists and pretenders, and should have been totally ignored. It would have been by a government with balls and brains. Carter is a disgrace.

But isn’t the Government planning to end the moratorium on live sheep exports?

Good on David Carter for at least starting to make a stand on the issue of ill-treatment of pigs – an issue that Labour Ministers were too gutless to tackle.

But if he is to be consistent, he needs to revisit the decision to permit the resumption of live sheep exports and to address the appalling conditions in factory chicken farms.

There is no ill treatment of pigs.

See the video Mr. Farrar posted of the pigs in Egypt?

That’s ill treatment.

I have written to some of the National party MPs regarding this, Bill English and Nick Smith have disclaimers on their e-mails but John Key’s response doesn’t so I presume it’s OK for me to repost it here:

On behalf of the Prime Minister, Hon John Key, thank you for recent letter concerning the export of live sheep for slaughter.

Mr Key can assure you that the export of live sheep for slaughter will not resume unless strict animal welfare standards are met and New Zealand’s reputation as a responsible exporter of agricultural products is maintained.

Since 2004, New Zealand has been negotiating towards a bilateral Arrangement with Saudi Arabia to re-open the way for the export of live sheep for slaughter. New Zealand stopped livestock exports to Saudi Arabia following the 2003 Cormo Express incident where there was a delay in offloading of live sheep from Australia to Saudi Arabia, resulting in a high death toll.

The aim of the Arrangement is to establish clear veterinary, transportation, quarantine and arrival processing guidelines, in order to ensure the welfare of animals. If the Arrangement is finalised, it would provide for an inspection by MAF Officials of the port, methods of transportation, holding and quarantine facilities, and commercial slaughterhouses in Saudi Arabia that would be utilised if a shipment from New Zealand was approved.

The Arrangement includes specific provision to guarantee the offloading of sheep – to prevent the risk of a repeat of the Cormo Express incident – and restricting trade to commercial slaughter houses. In addition, we propose requirements on both New Zealand and Saudi Arabia to abide by guidelines for the slaughter and transport of animals and killing of animals for disease control purposes agreed by the World Animal Health Organisation, of which we are both members.

These negotiations are continuing, and there is no set timetable for completion.

In 2007, Cabinet directed MAF to review the policy on the export of livestock for slaughter. Following this, the Customs Export Prohibition (Livestock for Slaughter) Order 2007 (CEPO) was put in place to prohibit the export of livestock for slaughter from New Zealand. The CEPO applies to all exports of cattle, sheep, deer and goats for slaughter regardless of the country of destination and the size of the shipment. The prohibition is not absolute and individual consignments may be approved by the Director-General of MAF on a case-by-case basis.

The Government is confident that trade in live sheep for slaughter to Saudi Arabia will resume only when there is a country-to-country agreement in place to support the trade relationship and in circumstances where individual consignments satisfy animal welfare standards.

It’s pretty simple really. Virtually everything that we do to animals is cruel to some degree. We just decide that some sorts of cruelty are OK – ie, we slaughter sheep here because (a) we eat them and (b) we minimise pain to the sheep. So, we decide that that is worth it. I agree, I love eating sheep.

However, the cost benefit of live sheep exports to the middle east is quite radically different. The only additional benefit as compared to slaughtering here is a religious one, and the additional cruelty to the animal is several orders of magnitude. And I’ll be damned (excuse pun) if I ever endorse that much cruelty solely on a religious basis.

I’m more than happy for us to ship meat to Saudi Arabia, but I can’t accept us the live trade.

Anyone know anything about the economics of this? It seems exporting live animals would be many magnitudes more costly than local slaughter and exporting meat.

If the only reason is religious then this is even more abhorrent.

(understand that the economics obviously work out as they pay more for live animals for religious slaughter)

Anyone who has travelled round the world a bit and got into the rural heartland or the back yards of urban markets will surely conclude that one of the great achievements of western, male dominated, christian,capitalist, exploitative, insensitive, resource consuming civilisation is that it has developed a remarkable sensitivity to animal welfare and wellbeing..
Those pre-industrial tribal societies that are so “close to nature” demonstrate a remarkable lack of empathy with the animal species they are supposed to revere.
That typical indifference is displayed for all to see in that video and especially in the way animals are simply dragged off the backs of trucks and allowed to all onto the road and subject to genuinely brutal treatment that we would not inflict on anything.
Watching a peasant family kill a pig is not a pretty sight.
We are not supposed to be judgemental of other cultures but when it comes to the treatment of animals I say “why not?” It is a fair indication of how they treat each other – and will treat me given half the chance.

Excuse me but the govt has not yet decided to start live sheep exports again. That decision is still being considered:
