Seen it and blogged about it many months ago. Nice to see it making it to youtube for general consumption 🙂

I hate to bring this up, but most of the world can’t separate us. There’s more linguistic differences from the north to south of Australia than there is between Australia and NZ. There’s a few signature sounds that someone trained to spot, can separate us. The fush-and-chups or the sex for six has more to do with a Sydney-NZ distinction. But mostly, the accent is too close.

We share sports leagures, have fought every major war together and often in the same formations. We vote practically the same way on every interenational treaty. Our economy is hoplessly intertwined. We think and act so similarly overseas, foreigners can’t tell us apart. Our currency and interest rates closely follow Australia. We coluld very easily become part of Australia because we’re mostly there already.

The only real point of distinctiveness, is that NZ is the most Polynesian Western country in the world. This is a process that started early on with inter-marriage (sex taboos against inter-marriage were rare by the standards of Australia, South ASfrica and the US) and has continued with more and more Maori loan-words becoming common usage.

I’m mostly in favour of joining Australia, if they’d have us. Maybe with a different balance of state versus federal powers than is normal in Australia. We’ve seen closer integration of the two economies since CER was signed in the 80s so that the two economies track each other as you point out. Many multinationals base themselves, sensibly, on the Australian east coast and run NZ as a branch office. Including my own… I’m employed by an Australian registered company, even tho I live and work in Wellington. So Australian politics has a great deal of influence on the NZ economy and, therefore, everything else about Australia. But we get no say in that politics.

Joining Australia would give us some influence on decisions that effect us. There are obvious economy of scale benefits in terms of merging federal government activities, such as not needing to operate two sets of overseas embassies. There are massive benefits for business from not needing to register for GST, payroll, and pensions etc in both countries. And I think there are benefits for individuals… many (or even most) Kiwis will live and work in Australia at some stage, and it’d be nice if government pensions and benefits were integrated.

I can’t think of any downside. There is national identity, but Scots are patriotically Scottish within the UK, Bavarians are patriotically Bavarian within the BRD, and Catalonians are happy to identify themselves as being from Catalonia. I’m sure that we could arrange some sort of separate identity for sporting purposes.

We need pro-growth policies that will raise our standards of living here to match or beat Australia’s. The issue will then become moot. Oh wait, that might require a little hard work. Joining Australia is so much easier. All those in favour can take a flying leap onto the next flight to Seednay and “join” themselves.

I’m not to keen on throwing our sovereignty away, but, all that wide open space though would be a good place to bury the treaty.
