Some people may have been following the serious problem of bee colonies disappearing across the world. It’s called Colony Collapse.

It’s critical because bees are necessary (i.e. not optional but necessary) for crop pollination. Crop farmers pay apiarists to put their hives in the middle of their fields precisely for this reason. No crops, no food, for ourselves or for farm animals. No food, no animals.

No-one knows why they’ve been disappearing and there’s been many theories. I read one the other day that makes a lot of sense. It basically says that bees (like pigeons) use magnetic sensors for navigation and those are being interfered with by cell phone microwave transmitters. In addition to that, most people know that when bees find a food source they return to the hive and do a waggle dance that points the rest of the hive toward the food source. Apparently the frequency used by those cell phone towers is exactly the same as the oscillation frequency used in that dance. Since bees are sensitive to the EM radiation this confuses the bee and causes a mis-direction. Consequently they just fly off and get lost.

So IF this is true, which can be easily established, then we have a choice. Change our technology, or starve.

Once again the media has done its usual appalling job of alerting people to this serious issue, I would hope at some point they pick this up and chase it down. It’s the sort of research NZ could very easily do with its specialist scientific resources and IF it’s true then it may be as simple as changing the frequency. Which would be a costly but doable exercise. The alternative is too horrible to contemplate.

This loss of bees is very serious and hopefully the public will be alerted and big business will be prompted to adjust.

Reid, I have been noticing stories about colony collapse for a year or more. I believe pesticide and herbicide use is a more likely explanation for this phenomenon. Although the bees and wasps are very evident in the bay of islands this year. I am outside most of the time during the day and have had to evade the little stinging bastards much more this year than any other year.
