So then, I now blame the Greens for global warming because they are frustrating the only realistic solution – Nuclear Power. If they keep it up, do you think they will be culpable for the results?

Full effort and focus on AGW. With all the funding that requires sending to Russia.

Or protecting jobs here in NZ?

Why don’t they allow in proven entrepreneurs, with money, self supporting who will create 10 jobs per family unit admitted?

Not sure the PI quota does anything but bolster KFC sales, and increase Labour’s voting base.

Well I agree that Greenies and their ilk are to blame for killing off a great option for clean, efficient energy. Of course Nuclear Power is not a solution to global warming though, since the whole AGW bullshit is just that – bullshit. But Nuclear Power would be great, stop us having to dam rivers, litter the country side with wind turbines etc etc.

Hagues, I used to think that, but I’ve changed my mind. And if you follow the sources of carbon emissions, it’s all coal powerplants and petrol engines. Everything else is trivial. So we need electric cars and nuclear power. It’s the only solution, I think.

Vibenna, no doubt that most of human’s carbon emissions come from coal powerplants and petrol engines. But this has nothing to do with “global warming.” I still agree that electric cars and nuclear power would be fantastic, but it has nothing to do with the weather.

He is concerned about the overall economy. He gets blamed for recession. We were in a recession last year, contrary to the financial press at the time. He has inflated us out of it…….

“…….. Corporations borrow short-term money to finance inventories and to keep their doors open. They finish projects that were begun prior to the recession. CD-rates are emergency money rates and day-to-day operations rates. The FED’s expansion of money since last January has stimulated this kind of business activity.

What matters most for businesses, long-term, is the long-term corporate bond rate. The lower this is, the cheaper it is to borrow long-term money for financing land acquisitions, buildings, equipment, and other longer-term productive assets. The FED’s stimulus package has had very little effect here. It has not succeeded in driving down corporate bond rates low enough to persuade managers to begin loading up on long-term corporate debt.

What about the response of business to cheaper short-term and mid-term money? It has sagged remarkably. Commercial paper (CD’s) has fallen from over $325 billion to about $200 billion.

These are short-term loans. What we are seeing is remarkable. The law of economics is this: “At a lower price, more will be demanded (other things being equal).” But the short-term money rate has fallen from 6% to under 2%, yet the amount CD money demanded has plummeted. The decline in demand has been even more dramatic with commercial and industrial loans from banks, which are longer-term loans. They have fallen from about $1.1 trillion to $520 trillion – a drop of over 50%.

Conclusion: other things have not remained equal. Despite falling short-term and commercial loan rates, businesses have left the debt markets in droves. This means that they have stopped expanding. They are operating on the basis of retained earnings.

This is rational in a market that is not expected to produce profits in the near future…..

“…….. Only one area of the economy stayed positive: housing starts/home sales. Here is the heaviest debt load for consumers. Housing is basically a long-term consumer good, heavily funded by mortgages. So, consumers have remained optimistic, long-term, but their employers have grown pessimistic at least with respect to the short term.

Consumers believe that the housing market will always rise. They think, “buy now, pay later.” They think, “I can lock in low-interest fixed mortgage money today, and I’ll pay it off with depreciated dollars.” This strategy has worked ever since 1946.

The credit markets are supplying this money to borrowers. The mortgage market is presumed to be secured by the U.S. government, so Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac keeps making available mortgage money to borrowers. These enterprises are called GSE’s or Government Sponsored Enterprises.

If mortgage holders think they can win at the expense of mortgage-issuers, why do people continue to put their money into pools of long-term mortgages? Because they think these pools of capital are government-guaranteed. They are looking for high returns short-term. They figure they can sell off their holdings later if rates climb…..

“……….. In the week following September 11, the Federal Reserve extended credit of $81 billion to ensure adequate liquidity in the markets. On September 14, Freddie Mac moved in an entirely opposite – and counterproductive – direction, issuing $5 billion in two-year notes that took cash out of the market. No other debt issuer did so because the markets were loathe to buy private company debt during considerable market instability. But Freddie Mac exploited its implied government guarantee to raise cheap money from frightened investors at a time of national emergency. . . .

In recent years, the dramatic growth in GSE debt has significantly increased the risk to U.S. taxpayers. Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac have increased their debt six-fold since 1992, from $196 billion to $1.26 trillion in the third quarter of 2001. In a decade when Treasury borrowing dropped dramatically, uncontrolled GSE debt was moving in the opposite direction. Almost unbelievably, the GSEs now guarantee more debt and mortgage-backed securities (“MBS”) than all comparable U.S. Treasury debt.

This debt has been issued chiefly to fund a lucrative investment portfolio, which was undertaken solely to grow profits for GSE shareholders. Here’s how it works: the GSEs borrow funds cheaply because of their implicit government guarantee, then invest them. The above-market returns are highly profitable – but do nothing to increase American homeownership. In 2000, both GSEs reported that this arbitrage investing accounted for approximately 60 percent of their net income. That’s like a local government issuing a revenue bond to build a schoolhouse, then using part of the money to play the stock market. If the GSEs bet right, their shareholders profit. If they bet wrong, the U.S. taxpayer loses.

Compounding this debt growth, the GSEs are also leveraged far beyond what would be permitted for other financial institutions. At year-end 2000, the GSEs’ debt-to-equity leverage for on-balance sheet liabilities was 30:1 versus 11:1 for commercial banks. If the GSEs were to meet the standards imposed on commercial banks, they would need to hold $82 billion in capital – or double their current amount. In their current condition, the Federal Reserve would deem them “significantly under-capitalized” – and they would face serious risk of closure. These institutions simply are woefully undercapitalized – a situation that becomes more perilous during a recession.

The GSEs attempt to mitigate the risk associated with their debt through extensive reliance on derivatives. From 1995 to 2000, the GSEs’ derivatives exposure increased over 400%. At the end of last year, the GSEs had $749 billion in such exposure. This is a massive amount of derivatives exposure.

As stated above, recent events underscore the riskiness of a derivatives strategy. In the third quarter of 2001, Fannie Mae reported a startling write-down of $10.6 billion in shareholder equity, reducing its equity by 29 percent from where it stood just three months earlier. Fannie Mae took a big position in the derivatives market and bet wrong. As a result, Fannie Mae’s debt/equity ratio shot up to 53:1. This approaches a doubling of the GSEs’ year-end 2000 leverage ratio of 30:1……

“………. I think the FED is providing liquidity mainly to keep this market solvent. The problem is, the constant increase in credit money continues to distort the capital markets. Eventually, monetary inflation will produce price inflation. Long-term interest rates will then rise to compensate lenders for the expected decline in the dollar’s future purchasing power. Equity in mortgages already held by investors will fall. There will be a derivatives-based, Enron-type event, on a scale vastly larger than Enron.

Congress worries about another Enron, yet its own policies are creating the biggest potential Enron-type event in history.

Housing got through the recession of 2001 unscathed. Any time an investment market is perceived as low-risk, capital flows into it. On the one hand, consumers are willing to borrow. On the other hand, lenders are willing to lend long-term. Liquidity looks permanent. The win-win nature of the arrangement is still widely perceived as low-risk. This is the classic mark of a bubble……..”

I’ve also blogged on why I think we should try to do something, and why it has to be electric cars and nuclear power. Come over to the light side, Hagues. Forgo your dark ways! But anyway, my argument in a nutshell is that carbon forcing is being masked by the Pacific Decadal Oscillation, but warming will return with a vengeance when the PDO flips back to its warm mode.

You cannot protect jobs, you can only do a job to meet a demand. Having employees work free for one day in ten is like using taxes to bail out every business in the country. For all the yap yap yapping about Labour squandering the best economic years, so have the majority of employers. It is easy to sit back and gobble the golden eggs – hell, you may even deserve to stuff your face – but the goose that laid them needs to be fed, and this goose eats new ideas, goods and services. Employers forgot that slow times follow fast times, they forgot to develop new structures, products and techniques, they grew fat companies, thinking that big equalled efficiency and competency, they forgot what business is and employed people who did just enough to meet the break even line – effectively, going backwards. They prepared for luxury, instead of life.

The solution to this imaginary recession is the same method for building a business when there is no recession. Lack of money has not caused the Anthropological Global Recession, or AGR, outdated attitudes and structures have. A sudden influx of money will not solve the problem, not even if every employee worked for free forever. The solution is to do work to meet demands – find those demands.

Take a look, too, at what many other authors on the Lew Rockwell.Com archives and the Ludwig Von Mises archives, were saying for years.

If you spend a little time even just following up the links provided by Gary North alone, you can only conclude that no-one can fairly say they were not WARNED. You also cannot conclude that this was a failure of the “free market”; the role of government policy induced hazards was the essential factor.

This crash has not just involved a mass failure of wisdom and imagination. This was a mass refusal to LISTEN, a mass willful rejection of advice that was obviously correct, to anyone with half a brain.

It also leads one to conclude that the contrary advice that everyone from the top politicians down preferred to listen to, could only have been based on shameless exploitation of vested interests. I also conclude that this is still the situation today.

In the case of the various talking heads dispensing free advice in the mainstream media, if any of these people were honest at any time, they would lose their job/sponsorship/advertising revenue.

Every private investor and even everyone who is merely looking at buying their own home; would be well advised to do their own research and locate honest sources like Gary North.

“The re-financing mania was a very rational decision for those who locked in long-term rates, but a far riskier decision for those who signed up for Adjustable R*te Mortg*ges (ARMs).

If you did not refinance your home at a three-year fixed rate, you missed a golden opportunity to skin the victims of Greenspan’s policy of lowering short-term rates, i.e., the lenders. But don’t despair. There will be another opportunity. All it will take is the destruction of the dollar.

When the Fed’s monetary inflation pushes up price inflation, as it will, and price inflation then produces inflation premiums for long-term loans (“Don’t pay me off with those depreciating dollars!”), both Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac will face bankruptcy on a scale larger than anything seen in Western economic history. There are trillions of dollars at risk between them. They hold the paper for half of America’s home mortg*ges. At that point, Greenspan & Co., sensing the threat of “cascading cross defaults,” will start buying T-bonds again, forcing down all long-term rates, including mortg*ge r*tes. The Japanese central bank has done this for 10 years. Why not the Fed?

But if the Fed does this in the face of a true sell-off of bonds, it will take an enormous increase in monetary inflation. This will put more upward pressure on mortg*ge r*tes.

I will get to this shortly, and what it means for home values……

“…….The Federal National Mortgage Association (Fannie Mae) and the Federal Home Loan Mortgage Association (Freddie Mac) are private investment organizations that enjoy the reputation of being backed by Congress in some way. Freddie Mac really does call itself Freddie Mac. I dare you to discover its real name on its Web site.

This reputation of being backed by Congress has led to their ability to attract investors to the tune of trillions of dollars. The fact that these are GSE’s – government-sponsored enterprises – does not mean legally that Congress must bail them out if they go under. It’s a political question. It’s also economic. How could Congress bail them out when the government is already running a deficit of $450 billion a year?

These GSE investments have gone into mortgages. Like bonds, these paper investments fall in value whenever long-term interest rates rise. Also, they get repaid early through re-financing at lower rates whenever interest rates fall. They are, in short, terrible investments. They are asymmetric, with both sides of the transaction favoring the debtors against the creditors.

One of the services I perform is to keep you informed of what is being written in the financial press. When I find someone who says something better than I do, I cite him or her and provide a Web link, if possible.

The New York Times (Aug. 8) ran an article on Fannie Mae by Alex Berenson. Its language was subdued. Its message was “Red Alert! Red Alert!”…..

“…….Fannie Mae has not disclosed how much the recent rise in rates affected the market value of its holdings, and analysts have wildly varying estimates. Kenneth Posner, a stock analyst at Morgan Stanley who is bullish on Fannie Mae, said it did not disclose enough information for outside analysts to determine monthly changes in the portfolio’s value.

This could create havoc for the U.S. Treasury bond market, as Gretchen Morgenson wrote in the New York Times (Aug. 17). Note: this is not some oddball newsletter. This is the sedate New York Times. Get ready to sweat.

Although many investors think that the Treasury market sets mortg*ge r*tes, mortgage-backed traders are the ones who hold sway. Their hegemony is a function of two things: the runaway growth in the mortgage market and the way mortgage portfolio managers must respond when rates rise or fall.

Until 2000, the United States Treasury market was the world’s largest and most liquid. Now the government bond market is overshadowed by the mortgage-backed securities market. Treasuries and corporate bonds each account for about 22 percent of the Lehman Brothers United States Aggregate Index, a measure of the whole fixed-income market; mortgage-backed securities make up almost 35 percent.

This would not be a problem if mortgage traders and managers of big loan portfolios, like Fannie Mae, did not typically hedge their holdings with Treasuries. Holders of mortgages hedge by selling short Treasury securities with maturities roughly equal to the average life of the mortgages in their portfolio.

Now, the hedgers’ needs can swamp the market they tap. This exacerbates moves in interest rates, producing a snowball effect that can push rates far lower or higher, and faster, than in previous years…….

“………Not worried yet? Well, then, take a look at Philip Coggan’s article in the staid, stiff-upper-lip London Financial Times. This ran on Aug. 11.

The speed of the retreat seems to have been driven by the peculiar structure of the US mortgage market. Most US homeowners borrow at a fixed rate, but unlike their British counterparts, they have a virtually free option to refinance their mortgage as rates fall…….

“……….If any of this happens – and eventually, it will happen – anyone with an ARM will be forced to sell his home, as his monthly payments rise. I call this “an ARM and a leg.” This will flood the market with unsaleable homes. As rates climb, the number of would-be buyers who qualify for loans falls. Also, the monthly payment rises, so people cannot afford to buy homes that they could have purchased when rates were low.

This is the bubble effect. It balloons when rates are falling. It pops when rates rise and are expected to rise even more.

To stop the rise in mortg*ge r*tes, one of two things must take place: (1) a depression, where all interest rates fall; (2) mass inflation, where the Fed buys long-term Treasury bonds. But the second policy is temporary. Eventually, no one will loan money because it will be re-paid in depreciated money. At that point, the Fed will be the lender of last resort in the housing market.

I think the latter is more likely.”

…But Professor Ernst of Peninsula Medical School said Prince Charles and his advisers appeared to be deliberately ignoring science, preferring “to rely on ‘make-believe’ and superstition”.

He added: “Prince Charles thus financially exploits a gullible public in a time of financial hardship.”

Race Relations Commissioner Joris de Bres says economic problems could see progress halted or reversed in terms of employment, standard of living and other social conditions for Maori and Pacific people.

Just throwing it out there, in case anyone influential in National is reading this, please, please make Joris de Bres the next scalp in the state sector cleanout.

Yes, a lot of money was made on the back of the scare, but it would not have been clever to just let every computer in the world roll its date over from “99” to “00” and see what happened.

I would add that the people in the IT industry who spent years setting up systems that were going to roll over from “99” to “00” one day, are either the most impractical geniuses or the biggest successful scammers in history.

Funny you should say that, PhilBest, I was just reading the comments on Jim Kunstler’s latest blog (a very high standard of debate, BTW). Someone bagged him for being such a “doomer” over Y2K, so why should anyone believe his doomy, gloomy forecasts now. Someone else was quick to argue that “The problems of Y2K were mitigated due to people raising the alarms so loudly that business actually threw billions of dollars at the problem and avoided catastrophe”.

Am following the Bain trial – and its starting to look like the police behaved very much like the corrections have been behaving recently. Evidence lost or destroyed, samples not checked.etc.
Starting to sound very much like the aftermath of the thomas trial – samples destroyed as soon as they could get them done.

If the police were to indefinitely store every bit of evidence following every trial, on the possibility that an appeal may take place some time in the future I wonder how big the secure warehouse would need to be?

That’s true – but have they said how long they did keep it? There’s been enough of an uproar about this case that a long, long time ago, if the police thought they had an iron clad case, they should have kept the incriminating evidence aside for this one at least.

Rather than throw it out so the defence can tell them they were destroying exonerating evidence.

Yes – but they didnt dispose of all the samples – only the bits that could have caused a problem if it (the evidence) was investigated or analysed. Also the negatives (that will show the order of the photos ) are gone. The prints are there , but no negatives. Why didnt they just get rid of the lot – but no – the ‘difficult to explain’ stuff only seems to have gone.

In the thomas siuation they got rid of the planted cartridges real quick – but not other stuff.

I still say – messy, messy.

sure – they did throw it out after winning the 1st trial. From what I can gather it was never used as evidence anyway? – so why would you keep it ?
Maybe Bains 1st lawyer should have brought it up in the 1st trial? Maybe Bain had a crap lawyer? – How’s that the crowns fault – all I know is that we are still paying for the problems of this dysfunctional family 15 years later

Defence cannot raise just anything. Essentially prosecution has the control of whats presented. If they dont bring it to court, defense cant automatically do so. Its the same with the Peter Ellis case. The prosecution only took to court the stuff that was possible (from the kids evidence). They didnt take impossible stories to court (like ellis burried someone for 3 days in the front lawn of the creche) – but they did take the parts that were possible – “He touched me here..”

If the police dont advise that they have skin samples (which could be tested ) then it simply doesnt come up in court. The defense can do nothing about it.

Margaret Wilson has penned a letter (from the UK) to the NZH editor, bemoaning the reintroduction of titles. The arrogant tone of the letter underscores her socialist idealogy, in unilaterally acting against the wishes of the majority of NZ’rs (in abolishing the titles), during a fit of ‘we know best’ . Good riddance to bad rubbish, I say.

This is another kid who has no doubt been killed at the hands of his family, just like the last one and the one before that.

What has happened to stop these killings in that time?………NOTHING, NADA, ZILCH, SWEET FUCK ALL.

I simply am not going to join the chorus of people who piss and moan about it when the very ones who should do something about it refuse to take responsibility.

Aaaahhh – Dear Barry. Maybe its you who has been watching tooooooo much TV.

The skin samples were brought up in the first trial by the police. As I understand it was just ESR couldn’t determine anything at the time (inconclusive) therefore they were destroyed. His defence lawyer is now is seizing upon that opportunity as something sinister by the police – and people like you fall for it.

BTW – Do you know anything about the ‘notes’ passed around during the 1st trial that may remove any doubt as to the guilty party???

insofar as his 1st trial lawyer – what’s he doing now??? (is he by chance disbarred and a city councillor?)
Maybe there was more to his performance than just a question

Lefties…. what a bunch of complete fools they can be sometimes.

Over on the ~~Labour funded blog~~ Standard a “guest post” with a title of How to reduce ACC costs without cutting cover there is a a typical skim the surface dim-bulb idea suggesting that the way to reduce the costs of a “no fault” system is for people to take some self responsibility for their weight….

I’m banned for two months over at the ~~Labour funded blog~~ Standard so I’m not going to point this out – somebody go have some fun with them – they can’t have it both ways.

Why can’t they just acknowledge that “no fault” is a luxury that we cannot afford. Charge fat people more ACC levies… oh no we couldn’t do that – but we can talk about how they consume more resources….
