Herald’s top ten political events of the decade
The Herald is celebrating ten years of nzherald.co.nz and one of the features is a look at the top ten political events of the last decade.
But they have made a boo boo with No 1 being “Jenny Shipley becomes deputy PM” in 1998, when what they mean is “Jenny Shipley sacks deputy PM”.
They also describe the 1999 – 2002 Labour/Alliance Government as our second coalition government. In fact it was our fourth. The first was the Liberal/Reform coalition from 1931 – 35. The second was National-United-ROC between 1995 and 1996. Third was National/NZ First from 1996 – 98.
Anyway the top ten are:
- Shipley sacks Peters – 1998
- Clark becomes PM – 1999
- Alliance implodes – 2002
- Record defeat for National – 2002
- Foreshore and Seabed Hikoi – 2004
- Rod Donald dies – 2005
- Benson-Pope and Field stand down – 2006
- Don Brash quits – 2006
- Peters censured – 2008
- Key becomes PM – 2008
No 1 and No 10 were good 🙂
Can’t think of anything too major they missed. Maybe the Orewa speech?
