The CEO of transpower should resign.

He is responsible for the Auckland power cut. His 800,000 dollar salary says so.

I cannot believe they took out a transformer for maintenance knowing a failure in one of the remaining transformers would cause massive power cuts.

If Antonie Dixon has killed himself I am not surprised because I have a friend who knew him and he was a narcissistic (self centred & arrogant) personality. Suicide is an act of selfishness/narcissism.

E.g. people who throw themselves in front of trains want an easy out and have no consideration for the train driver, the train manager who has to check if help can be given, and the people who have to pick up the pieces.

(No offence to anyone is intended, I’m simply calling a spade a spade. I have known many people who are depressed and/or suicidal)

If I understood, they only had three to begin with. They are around 38 years old (within an expected service life of 50 years). If one had failed because appropriate maintenance had not been done, then what would you have said?

If Antonie Dixon has committed suicide I am not surprised: I have a friend who knew him and Dixon is/was narcissistic (a narcissistic person places their own needs and wants above those of everyone else). Suicide is an extreme form of narcissism.

“Liberal Democrat councillor Colin Rosenstiel stopped the vehicle as crews tried to reach an injured person at a summer festival on common land in Cambridge.

Mr Rosenstiel rode his bicycle into the path of the ambulance, blocking the entrance, and refused to budge because he claimed cars were not allowed on the grass.

The emergency crew eventually manoeuvred around him but, on leaving the ground, after they had treated the patient, he allegedly blocked their exit again by locking the gate.”

Rodney was not the player he is the referee. He is no longer an opposition gadfly, but a Minister and to the majority his comments will be seen as advocating breaking the law.

He does not deserve to be given a pass on this. otherwise we are back to the days of Helen and Winston.

I would say he should resign.

The fact is , they do not have enough transformers to run NZ’s largest city. Maintenance is expected activity and redundant systems should cope with failure during planned maintenance.

This report says transformer life is 60 years with early failure not expected till 55 years.

It seems to me highly probable that this failure is human induced. It’s not surprising it happened when there was work on site. What is surprising is that a failure led to a power cut. That should not happen as they should have been working at n-1, meaning the loss of one asset would not interfere with supply. This should apply during maintenance as well. In other words they shoudl have got by on one transformer.

And all this ‘let’s chuck more money at transpower’, well isn’t there the risk that we are rewarding failure a bit like bailing out failed banks? Shouldn’t we find out what caused the problem first?

Protester manhandles John Key at Waitangi
BREAKING NEWS: Prime Minister John Key has been manhandled by a protester moments before he was due to be welcomed on to Ti Tii Marae.

A lone protester rushed towards Key yelling ‘the movement is still alive’.

The protester was dragged away by bystanders.

Mr Key appeared unruffled by the event and moments later was welcomed on to the Marae.

Witnesses said the protester ‘manhandled’ Mr Key before being dragged away.

Speaking to Stuff.co.nz, the protester, while under police guard, said: “The Maori party ain’t going to help us, without protest we wouldn’t have reo, without protest we wouldn’t have kura kaupapa.”

About ten minutes before Mr Key’s arrival five undercover police officers were busted by Marae staff for posing as tourists, and then when confronted, suggesting they were part of the media.

When Marae staff members attempted to confiscate a camera being carried by one of the female officers, the police were forced to reveal their true identities.

It is understood the Marae had requested that police did not to come on to the grounds.

1. Why was he dragged away by bystanders? Where were the DPS?
2. Why would the Marae request that police should not come onto the grounds?

“…..one particular convenience for policy makers. Government spending is, according to Keynes’s construct, a key component in determining aggregate demand, so more spending, even to resod the Capitol Mall or distribute free contraception, drives the economy in the short run.

A father of public choice economics, Nobel laureate James Buchanan, argues that the great flaw in Keynesianism is that it ignores the obvious, self-interested incentives of government actors implementing fiscal policy and creates intellectual cover for what would otherwise be viewed as self-serving and irresponsible behavior by politicians. It is also very difficult to turn off the spigot in better economic times, and Keynes blithely ignored the long-term effects of financing an expanded deficit.

It’s clear why Keynes’s popularity endures in Congress. Intellectual cover for a spending spree will always be appreciated there. But it’s harder to see any justification for the perverse form of fiscal child abuse that heaps massive debts on future generations.

Today, one problem with manipulating the economy through “discretionary” spending — that part of the budget not mandated by one entitlement or another — is that entitlements have grown large enough to influence the economy, a phenomenon unheard of when Keynes was alive. Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security and other entitlements are becoming larger factors in economic decision making than what Congress spends on, say, roads. Discretionary spending is becoming irrelevant as a fiscal tool……”

That is one hugely important point: since Keynes’ day, government spending on entitlements has become so big that discretionary spending is dwarfed by it. One could wonder, if government spending really worked as an economic stimulus, the fact that over the decades we have had more and more of it, why economic growth rates have gone down rather than up…..eh? And if we’ve already got government spending in normal times, of a greater level than Keynes would have been envisaging as the solution to a crisis, perhaps we need to re-look at the validity of his ideas to the modern day situation?

He is actually on our side against those guys, on a lot of the issues that matter. I enjoy unearthing the occasional bit of good old fashioned common sense from him, like on the housing racket or chardonnay socialists or what welfare has done to Maori or how criminal justice could best be meted out.

Rodney Hide did not advocate breaking the law because it turns out the builder wasn’t breaking the law.
The Council has now conceded that their rules say one can add one shower without having to make it wheel chair accessible.
Only if you are adding more than one does the requirement kick in.
One can argue the logic but that is what their rule book says.

The builder was being screwed for daring to rape the Earth mother by using resources.

Maori are very fickle.

If it was not clearly understood that police weren’t permitted on the ground then I would surmise that was an on the spot outburst.

Isn’t Tii Tai a state marae anyway. Doubt police can be kept off which of course makes their covert surveillance all the more provocative. Which usually describes police actions.

The PM must also be thinking hard about the DPS. I would find their lack of presence unnerving in such a situation.

You won’t be the only one asking that q David.

None of your links ever cite a post from me supporting Hamas. None of your links cite a post from me condemning Jews or the people of Israel.

I am definitely against the current govt of Israel Bok. That’s because they act against the interests of the Jewish people. However you appear to have conflated the two concepts which are actually quite separate things.

Perhaps you might want to continue your research, although I can assure you that I have never ever ever said anything that criticizes the people of Israel nor shows support for Hamas, in anyway, whatsover. Unless of course you take the view that criticising the govt of Israel is de facto supporting Hamas, but such a view would be such a mistaken, juvenile and puerile approach that I could hardly credit it to a ten-year-old let alone someone like you Bok.

I have just found out that spotless catering are charging an extra $1.50 per SMALL bottle of beer at the 7’s today, the bastards are claiming it is a holiday surcharge.

That MIGHT be acceptable if the thieves were not charging $5.00 per SMALL bottle already.

Given recent revelations, I’m calling the UN as being perilously close to being a belligerent on the side of Hamas.

I’m not a huge fan of the UN however on this matter it is merely reflecting the widespread opinion that the solution to the ME is a little less belligerence. The Davos forum video featuring Erdogan (Pres of Turkey); Ban-ki-Moon, Shimon Peres and Arab League Secretary-General Amr Moussa, is well worth watching. Whaleoil’s take on it is really quite irrelevant, it’s worth suspending your prejudices and listening to everything every participant says with an open mind.

It really surprises me that some people continue to use partisan politics when looking at this issue. Such people cannot seem to comprehend that even if it’s the lefties who are advocating for a solution, that doesn’t make the solution automatically the wrong thing to do. Here’s an emotive quote from a lefty that logically and accurately summarises the human shields aspect. What he says is actually, in fact, true. Some conservatives cannot seem to bring themselves to see that. I find that very strange indeed.
