Hussein Messiah Obama announced another multi billion dollar “bail out” overnight, it immediately sent the markets into a 300 point free-fall which totally wiped out the recovery of the last few days.

The message is crystal fucking clear to everybody but the pinko’s. keep out of the markets and things will improve.

Keys claims of a “huge” stimulus package in NZ apparently includes spending from Labours last budget ( before we knew there was a stimulus needed.

Not only that the buyout of Kiwirail is also included.

So the “9 billion stimulus” that key trumpets at every possibility includes the $700 million paid to Toll Holdings. All of which national screamed about for months.

Those expensive spin doctors must have to justify their pay some how, but bullshit is still bullshit

The Attorney General is required to be scrupulously independent when issuing these warnings. Not always an easy ask, as such an opinion does tend to rain on the Government’s parade. And sometimes messengers get shot.

Such a report should have been made in respect of the Electoral Finance bill, but wasn’t.

Jack — I’m not sure that the Minister you quote can speak for all Christians. It is always very difficult to comment on a disaster and say “this is definitely the judgement of God”. So the pastor could well be wrong on this particular occasion. On that point I find myself in agreement with you.

Certainly when hundreds of people have died and thousands of people are in mourning the pastor’s comments are incredibly insensitive to say the least. And I am sure that I don’t know what to make of his ministry being called “Catch the Fire”?

“……Neoclassical economic theory never caught up with either the data, or the actual practices of Central Banks—and Ben Bernanke, a leading neoclassical theoretician, and unabashed fan of Milton Friedman, is now in control of the Federal Reserve. He is therefore trying to resolve the financial crisis and prevent deflation in a neoclassical manner: by increasing the Base Money supply.

Give Bernanke credit for trying here: the rate at which he is increasing Base Money is unprecedented. Base Money doubled between 1994 and 2008; Bernanke has doubled it again in just the last 4 months.

If the money multiplier model of money creation were correct, then ultimately this would lead to a dramatic growth in the money supply as an additional US$7 trillion of credit money was gradually created.

If neoclassical theory was correct, this increase in the money supply would cause a bout of inflation, which would end bring the current deflationary period to a halt, and we could all go back to “business as usual”. That is clearly what Bernanke is banking on.

However, from the point of view of the empirical record, and the rival theory of endogenous money, this will fail on at least four fronts:

1. Banks won’t create more credit money as a result of the injections of Base Money. Instead, inactive reserves will rise;

2. Creating more credit money requires a matching increase in debt—even if the money multiplier model were correct, what would the odds be of the private sector taking on an additional US$7 trillion in debt in addition to the current US$42 trillion it already owes?;

3. Deflation will continue because the motive force behind it will still be there—distress selling by retailers and wholesalers who are desperately trying to avoid going bankrupt; and

4. The macroeconomic process of deleveraging will reduce real demand no matter what is done, as Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer recently noted: “We’re certainly in the midst of a once-in-a-lifetime set of economic conditions. The perspective I would bring is not one of recession. Rather, the economy is resetting to lower level of business and consumer spending based largely on the reduced leverage in economy”.

The only way that Bernanke’s “printing press example” would work to cause inflation in our current debt-laden would be if simply Zimbabwean levels of money were printed—so that fiat money could substantially repay outstanding debt and effectively supplant credit-based money.

Measured on this scale, Bernanke’s increase in Base Money goes from being heroic to trivial. Not only does the scale of credit-created money greatly exceed government-created money, but debt in turn greatly exceeds even the broadest measure of the money stock—the M3 series that the Fed some years ago decided to discontinue.

Bernanke’s expansion of M0 in the last four months of 2008 has merely reduced the debt to M0 ratio from 47:1 to 36:1……

“…..To make a serious dent in debt levels, and thus enable the increase in base money to affect the aggregate money stock and hence cause inflation, Bernanke would need to not merely double M0, but to increase it by a factor of, say, 25 from pre-intervention levels. That US$20 trillion truckload of greenbacks might enable Americans to repay, say, one quarter of outstanding debt with one half—thus reducing the debt to GDP ratio about 200% (roughly what it was during the DotCom bubble and, coincidentally, 1931)—and get back to some serious inflationary spending with the other (of course, in the context of a seriously depreciating currency). But with anything less than that, his attempts to reflate the American economy will sink in the ocean of debt created by America’s modern-day “Roving Cavaliers of Credit”……

“…..This is the real world phenomenon that Bernanke is now railing against with his increases in Base Money, and already the widespread lament amongst policy makers is that banks are not lending out this additional money, but simply building up their reserves.

Tough: in a credit economy, that’s what banks do after a financial crisis—it’s what they did during the Great Depression. This credit-economy phenomenon is the real reason that the money supply dropped during the Depression: it wasn’t due to “bad Federal Reserve policy” as Bernanke himself has opined, but due to the fact that we live in a credit money world, and not the fiat money figment of neoclassical imagination…..”

The secular states of Scandinavia also enjoy far lower crime rates than the religious USA. that speaks volumes for the ill effects of religion.

Although atheism is not a religion, if itb was it would be the world’s second fastest growing religion.

“What would you think if you heard a prominent physician being interviewed and the topic of discussion was the breakout of a serious epidemic, and then the physician started enthusing about how great this plague would be for his business? At the very least, you would regard such remarks as tactless and inappropriate. More likely, you would be repulsed by the lack of compassion, the gross selfishness, the ruthlessness of such an attitude.

What if you then discovered that the physician was part of a medical cabal that had unleashed the plague on the public? Would you not want, at the very least, to see them banned from the practice of medicine, and perhaps punished for having inflicted such cruel and unnecessary suffering upon so many innocent victims?

This ugly scenario is analogous to our political situation today. Leading Democrat politicians openly gush about how the current economic pain has opened the door of opportunity for them to expand the powers of the federal government. They openly celebrate what they perceive as a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to enact sweeping new legislation, create new government programs, and assert ever-greater economic control over the American people.

Shortly after being appointed chief of staff to President-elect Obama, Rahm Emanuel told a conference of corporate CEOs how the new administration views today’s wrenching economic crisis: “This crisis provides the opportunity for us to do things that you could not do before.”

“You never want a serious crisis to go to waste,” Mr. Emanuel declared with amazing candor.

This likewise reflects the view of Emanuel’s boss. Obama himself recently stated, “This painful crisis also provides us with an opportunity to transform our economy.”

The Democratic majority in Congress apparently shares the administration’s view of the crisis. On Dec. 4, House Financial Services Chairman and a principal Democratic spokesman, Rep. Barney Frank (D-Mass.), enthusiastically predicted that 2009 would be the “best year” for new public policies since Franklin Roosevelt’s New Deal.

Mr. Frank’s statement is rich with irony. One irony is that he is one of the main culprits in having blocked Republican attempts to reform Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac several years ago. The result was this year’s catastrophic bankruptcy of the two mortgage-lending giants, which was one of the key events that helped to plunge the country into its current economic woes. Barack Obama said in October that there would be time after the election to identify and punish those responsible for contributing to the country’s financial woes, but instead of being punished for his malfeasance, Barney Frank is being rewarded with a lead role in reshaping economic policy.

There is a second irony in Mr. Frank’s gushing adoration of the New Deal. If 2009 is to be the “best year” for public policy since the New Deal, it suggests that Mr. Frank celebrates both the current economic pain and the economic devastation of the Great Depression as being exactly what “the doctor” (i.e., Mr. Frank and his ideological soul mates on Capitol Hill) ordered—lots of pain for lots of Americans, so that Frank and Company can initiate some radical public-policy surgery.

A further inference to be drawn from Frank’s statement is that he views the New Deal as the high-water mark for good legislation in our country. Apparently, Frank does not regard the growth-stimulating tax cuts under Presidents Kennedy, Reagan, and George W. Bush as being as helpful to the American people as the New Deal. The tax cuts unleashed and led to vibrant growth in the private sector; the New Deal, by continually siphoning materials, labor, and capital from the private sector to the public sector, crippled economic activity and consequently imposed great economic hardship on Americans. Clearly, Frank favors legislation that enlarges the public sector over legislation that helps the private sector to thrive.

One of the many striking similarities between today’s crisis and the Great Depression is that Democratic spin-masters are engaged in an all-out propaganda campaign to blame the 2008 financial panic on market behavior rather than on the government intervention that actually caused it. They are borrowing a page from the long-time strategy of New Deal apologists, who fallaciously attribute the Great Depression to “market failure,” rather on the radical government intervention that disrupted and suppressed the ability of markets to function.

What needs to be widely understood by Americans is this: If those in power have the same dislike for markets and the same exaggerated faith in government that FDR had, and if the New Deal is to be the model for legislation in 2009, then we shouldn’t be surprised if we end up with similarly painful economic conditions.

“We the people” are seeking cures from economic doctors with a well-known history of malpractice. Heaven help us survive whatever remedies they may concoct.”

I would like to point out that Christianity is not a religion, it is a faith. To use an analogy ; Faith is the game, religions are the teams playing it.

Jack — it is an interesting question that you raise. According to the sociology Professor that you linked to — Denmark and Sweden are happy countries, with relatively low levels of violent crime and relatively low levels of religious belief and church attendance. Therefore, according to the good professor, those examples show that we all would be better off thinking like many sociology professors and becoming atheists.

Let me throw in a couple of thoughts. Denmark and Sweden have been officially Christian for around a thousand years. In the past they were highly religious (everyone was) and had high levels of church attendance. Is it not possible that they are borrowing off the accumulated moral capital of Christianity? That although they may not go to church now, some of the 10 Commandments handed down by their forefathers are still taken for granted?

Another thought — a quick google of the words “religion in Sweden” and “religion in Denmark” mention Islam as the second most numerous religion in those countries. My understanding is that Islam is a serious threat to both those countries. There is emerging an underclass of Muslims who just do not accept liberal democracy. Without Christianity I wonder how the tolerant and Liberal Scandinavians are going to cope with those who are not at all tolerant or Liberal?

Finally — I wonder if the good professor thought to consider how law-abiding and happy those countries were in the past when most people went to church? Could it be that 100 years ago for example they were a happy and prosperous nation then? Maybe Danes and Swedes are just a happy and law-abiding people?

Just getting back to the claim that Sweden has low levels of crime. ( In support of the view that because they have low levels of church attendance they are happier and more prosperous and more law-abiding than countries with high levels of religious affiliation).

Here is some evidence that Sweden is actually experiencing something of a crime wave:

” Instability is spreading to most urban and suburban areas. Street violenceof all kinds is soaring on a national level. Private security companiesare in great demand in major Swedish cities, as a serious lack of police to combat rising crime has made many citizens tired of being robbed. The official number of rape charges in Sweden has more than tripled in 30 years :

“Rape Charges are Rapidly Increasing in Sweden”

Sweden’s largest newspaper Aftonbladet reports that “….rape charges are rapidly increasing in Sweden”.

The number of reported cases of physical abuse/assault in Stockholm has also tripled in three decades. This steep rise in all kinds of crime and violence has happened at the same time as an unprecedented amount of immigration to the country. Of course, Swedish politicians would never dream of connecting the two. However, in one of those rare cases where a Swedish newspaper has actually told the truth, Aftonbladet revealed that 9 out of the 10 most criminal ethnic groups in Sweden are Muslims. A trend known from other European countries such as France, where Muslims make up 10% of the general population, but 70% of the prison population. Keep this in mind when you read the following information:

Steep rise in underage prisoners

The number of people under the age of 18 who are serving sentences in juvenile detention centres has risen sharply over the last five years. According to prison service figures, there were 123 young people in Sweden’s youth units last year. That’s an increase of 151% compared to 1999, reported Dagens Nyheter. “Violent crime committed by young people is rising and that is worrying,” Minister for Public Health and Social Services, Morgan Johansson, told the paper. Johansson also tried to paint the picture in a more positive light by claiming that another reason for the increase was that more serious crimes involving young people were being solved by police.

Swedish prisoners in riot

A riot by over forty prisoners at a jail in central Sweden ended on Friday night, but not before a prison building had been wrecked by the rebellious inmates. The rebellion, in the ‘motivation department’ of the Järvsta jail in Gävle, started on Friday evening at half past seven. The motivation department is home to those prisoners classed as particularly difficult to reform. Early reports indicated that prison warders had been taken captive, but this was later denied by police. The prisoners’ claimed they were rioting in response to overcrowding at the jail, reported Dagens Nyheter. Inmates armed themselves with iron bars and tried to escape by breaking out of doors and windows, and destroyed all the surveillance cameras in the building.

Swedish Police “Unmotivated” to Fight Rising Crime

Gangs of 14 – 15-year-olds raping and robbing is now common in many Stockholm suburbs. Mafia networks demanding protecting money from private businesses and giving bomb threats to municipal workers are increasingly common. Organized crime is no longer just a problem in the major cities. It has now spread throughout most of Sweden.”

RIGHT. Here’s where I stand. The least dangerous and destitute nations on earth, are the Christian protestant ones. The next least dangerous and destitute ones are the Roman Catholic ones. Another significant group, are the “Christianising” ones, and another class, are the ones that have been soundly beaten in war by the USA and treated with unprecedented Christian charity. (Japan).

The track record of secular communist and other totalitarian nations; and the track record of Islam, are blots on the record of humanity. The rest fall somewhere between the extremes of “protestant Christianity” and “secular communism”.

I would add that no nation that has set itself AGAINST God, as opposed to “tolerance”, which is inevitably based on Christianity anyway, has anything other than shame to its name. Those nations of Christendom which are turning apostate, are reaping what they sow, Sweden being an outstanding example of this. There was a time when lefties pointed to Sweden as an example of how socialism should be done, when all Sweden was doing was living off the social capital of their long established Lutheranism, and slowly squandering it. Socialism brings social breakdown at a rate inversely proportional to the strength of a nation’s existing social capital; Sweden’s was quite high; NZ’s was quite low, hence our underclass developed much quicker. But Sweden has succeeded now in leading the world in some particularly repugnant aspects of social breakdown, such as the rate of rape, and of the murder of babies, and of kids murdering their parents. (That last will reach NZ too, you wait).
