im not sure why theres no love for vista? i run vista ultimate on my PC and my media centre.. its great!
especially my media centre – id take a bullet for that!

Dime: If it works for you, thats great. But as someone who works in the industry, I would not use or recommend Vista to anyone, even today.

As for Windows 7, I’ve been using it the past week, am currently waiting on Microsoft’s website to release access to get a legitimate key for the beta 1. Windows 7 is what Vista should have been. Its extremely fast, and even in beta very solid. Am loving it. When it is released later this year, it will be the first Microsoft operating system I seriously consider paying for since MSDOS 5.0 . Theres no way Microsoft can miss the Christmas rush with Windows 7 unless something seriously major happens between now and then.

Might even be tempted to take Ubuntu off my workhorse machine that handles most of my grunt work, I’m that impressed by Windows 7.

(Disclaimer : I’ve been using Linux and others since 1994 and my Windows XP license was gifted by my employer at the time. All other copies of MS OS’s I have had belonged to companies I worked for.)

A very good article on why Win7 should be free.

Let’s face it, Windows 7 is Windows Vista Service Release 2, more than a service pack but less than a major release, with only a few added extra features, or as I am now in the custom of calling it, Windows Fixta. And since Windows 7 is essentially a performance and usability fix for a defective product, I’m of the increasing opinion that a Windows 7 upgrade should be free to anyone who was conned into buying Windows Vista.

Yes, you heard me. If you own a copy of Windows Vista — Microsoft should be giving you a download entitlement to whatever corresponding version you have. So if you have Home, you should get Windows 7 Home. If you have Ultimate, you should get Windows 7 Ultimate.

Vista has driven me crazy.

XP is much better for stability.

Going to get a Mac here.

Missing that whole OS right now.

I got talked into Vista just after it was released by the fellow who was, at the time, repairing my PC.

I have since changed repairmen.

The MacDoctor admits that he enjoys laughing at users of Vista and irritating them with comparisons to his MacBook Pro. He has tried giving up this nasty habit, because he knows it is wrong to make jokes about disabled people.

But he just can’t help himself.

Reid: no, you cannot turn it off in Vista or Win7. But the implementation in Win7 is a lot less invasive. Its still.

Windows 7 is what Vista should’ve been.

Dime: Windows7 is currently only a beta1 product. That means I don’t recommend it to replace your normal platform. If you are lucky enough to get a beta key, it will only last till August and then you’ll need to either go back to Vista/XP or hope Microsoft release a new beta+key.

Having said that, its very solid and I am using it a lot. Subjectively speaking, its faster than XP and a lot less intrusive than Vista with the stability of Windows Server 2008. At least thats how it feels after the short period I’ve been using it. Thats all the more impressive because its still beta so still has all the testing garbage in it.

The minimum requirements are essentially half of Vistas. It will actually be usable with only 1GB of ram, but you’ll want a relatively decent video card. Microsoft intends this to be the platform that replaces XP and competes with Linux on the Netbook style computers like the EeePC and so on. Something Vista couldn’t even dream of doing.

As I mentioned previously, even at this early stage (only the first public beta) I am already impressed enough with it that I will probably buy it when its available at the end of 2009 or beginning of 2010. Which is a big deal for me. My old boss had to buy me a copy of XP because I refused to waste money on it. I haven’t paid the MS tax since MSDOS5. Built my computers myself instead.

Hope XP doesn’t become obsolete before Linux or Mac will run my graphics & other software. Mind you I am still using Win3.1 to run an old machine and it it is so stable.

Been running the PDC build of Win7 on one of my boxes since October.

Just paved that and rebuilt- my home Media Center and have just paved and rebuilt my 2nd work notebook. My primary work notebook will stay on Vista until I’m back from 3 weeks of work travel… rather not tempt fate… but I will be doing all my work demos from the new Win 7 machine in the first instance.

Windows 7 simply knocks the socks off any of the other desktop OSes at the moment. I’ve found stability to be great and apart from one blue screen on my rebuilt media center while doing a windows update last night I’s been every bit as stable as Vista and faster than XP on the equivalent hardware.

It’s been getting rave reviews from the folks around the office running eePCs and netbooks due mainly to performance.

To give you some hard stats
Clean boot on a clean Vista build on my Media box
803MB used and 60% CPU
Same box on Win7
440MB used and 17% CPU

I’ve got a 1Ghz Original Centrino tablet lying around somewhere that will get the treatment as soon as I can find the power adapter.

Tried a MacBook about 8 months ago.
Now I am a complete convert. Just bought an iMac to replace my PC.
It just works. Love it!

I think Steve C’ comments show why MS have finally got their shit together re: less invasive, performant non-bloat ware – “Might even be tempted to take Ubuntu off my workhorse machine”

There has been a growing trend post the Vista debacle of punters a) staying on XP b) migrating to Linux Ubuntu etc c) dissing MS because they have deserved it.

My desktop has XP, my laptop has XP (I went out of my way to buy a package that DIDNT have VISTA) and now I’ve gone with a eee pc 901 as my carry around laptop and it runs linux of some kind and its quite suitable for its purpose. MS must be shitting bricks that their hegemony over operating systems is being busted.

This is something else I have tried to raise with the Commerce Commission. Why should ANY operating system be bundled as part of a hardware deal? Vista or XP? Why not the consumers’ choice? How about NO OS so I can install any flavour Linux I want? This is nothing but a Micro$oft tax.

I unfortunately have Vista on my relatively new laptop. I had XP on my last one which was infinitely better. For someone whos relatively useless with computers (ok but not to the point of installing new OSs) I didnt have the option of changing and all the packages came with Vista except some cheap Acers and thought doing that was asking for more trouble.

This is only a cheap laptop, I might just have to buy a new one once a viable alternative exists.

Why is Vista being forced on us.

The Wintec Polytech has just changed all its programmes to Vista.

I’m guessing all tertiary institutions have as well.

Would Vista impact on using personal programmes at home?

About 9 years ago, I bought a SOny with Windows ME.. think you remember that lemon operating system. What I did is to by an expensive paper weight. Sounds like Vista is the same thing. XP it made things alot easier but I had a dissatisfied taste in my mouth with windows after using a Mac SE for about 6 years. 5 years ago, I was curious about Linux so switched over trying various distributions. It wasn’t quite there for the average user but I saw the potential. Everything is free or you can buy the operating system for about 10 bucks or download it for free. It is very stable, no viruses yet. Drivers are getting better but Microsoft is threatening the peripheral manufacturers not to make drivers for linux. I found out my motherboard wasn’t compatible with Linux but when I dropped my ram from 1 gig to 512 mb, it is working fine. It isn’t compatible because again Microsoft’s influence. Now I have a dual boot system but when I go to Microsoft, all these licensing crap warning me I have so many days if I don’t do this or that. Go with Ubuntu Linux. My wife bought an Imac and loves it! They are terrific machines but I wanted to stay with Linux because of the pricing. The kids use windows for games.
