BBQ: Type:Charcoal vs Gas. Relative merits and demerits, please discuss in bullet points no more than three per type.

Charcoal: Better taste, better for beer consumption duration whilst tending, Real fire.

Gas: Quick, Easy, Longer cooking window.

OK, I’m prejudiced with family and friends converging on a picnic spot or someone’s home with their own meat, salads, and side dishes in hand: meat is the centrepiece of the Seffrikan braai- boerewors, sosaties, kebabs, marinated chicken, pork and lamb chops, steaks, spareribs- and for us from the coast, fish and kreef [crayfish].

Braaivleis means “roasted meat”. One cannot roast on gas, therefore I braai on fire.

Besides which, burning wood and charcoal pisses off the Greens.

I find a healthy dose of non native renewable pinus radiata cones makes an excellent ember bed to burn charcoal GMM.

In this way I assuage my green guilt before roasting dead beasts and drinking beer.

You can Roast on the right type of Gas BBQ. You need a lid though.

My advice is to to get the biggest and best that you can afford. Otherwise stick to Carbon.

Charcoal:

Fast, dry heat – makes any kind of cooking better.

electricity: slow dry heat – makes most things worse.

Gas: fast wet heat – turn steak into beautiful shoe soles.

“Do you have a solution to my BBQ conundrum?”…I sure do; you can indeed have both.

First get hold of a decent gas BBQ, you will need to get a model that has a vented tray between the gas burners and the actual cooking surface and most importantly a hood.

Then get yourself some wood chips (untreated obviously), take the wood chips and soak them in water for at least 15 mins, take the damp wood chips and wrap them in tinfoil, you will need to make sure that the wood chips are wrapped in two to three layers of tinfoil.
Place the tinfoil wrapped wood chips on the vented tray (beneath the cooking surface but above the burners) and cut a series of holes in the top ONLY, as you cook the wood chips will begin to smoulder and as long as you keep the hood down you can have beautifully smoked food and a much longer cooking window that a gas BBQ allows.

I’m angry about this government. In the last 10 years have seen awesome economic growth on the back of the farmers.

Rather than returning the money to the tax payers, the government saw fit to increasing their budgets to steal the additional taxpayer cash.

Now, the money has gone, but, the expediture has not decreased . It is easy to increase expenditure, not easy to deconstruct the structures and jobs created by additional spending.

What happened to Helens promise to lift NZ to the top 1/2 of the OECD? Her major economic policies, working for families, kiwisaver, and emissions trading will not work.

In 2 years time, when pensions are cut, will people be happy to be forking out money to fix choo choo trains? All very well to have high morals and principles when the economy is good, but, when economies go bad you gotta start asking questions of some of Cullens and Helens spending decisions.

Helen and Cullen have destroyed the next 10 years for New Zealand. Shall we let them have another go?

This is why Act are so great, they believe in keeping govt activities to core services and being efficient. Labour greenies say that this is a return to the 90’s, but sounds better than their destruction of the NZ .

Speaking of BBQ’s: Had some lovely BBQ ribs last night, Hot Cajun Smoked from Wallace Corp. 20 mins on the BBQ was all they needed.

No government can dig our way out of this mess without focusing on Local Government. We are greeted today with a hike in petrol prices in Auckland mainly to fund a rail network which will simply destroy wealth. Of course this nonsense is encouraged by shoddy debate, shoddy reporting and of course shonky statistics. I sent this letter to the Herald a few days in response to a story bearing the headline “Aucklanders are Ending their Love Affair with Cars.” It has not been published presumably because reporters do not like to admit error.

Dear Editor
The recent fall in harbour bridge traffic and the increased use of public transport does not indicate the end of Aucklanders’ preference for their cars.

The 11% fall in bridge traffic and the 10% rise in public transport use might suggest that about the same number of people are abandoning their private car as are moving to public transport.

But take a typical city where car trips are 10,000,000 trips a month while public transport trips are 500,000 a month. (A common ratio) A ten percent fall in car trips would be 1,000,000 fewer trips while a ten percent increase in public transport would be only 50,000 extra trips. Where have the other 950,000 drivers gone?

US statistics show that only about 2-3 percent of last year’s annual fall of 120 billion miles driven was due to a switch to public transport.
The vast amount of reduced miles resulted from better trip planning, more car-pooling and telecommuting, and reduced recreational and other non-work related trips. Work related trips are no longer the majority of vehicle trips in Auckland.
Aucklanders still prefer their cars for the vast majority of their trips but they are using them more efficiently.

You know, seeing as this is a general debate page, I would like to make the comment that, after due consideration and receiving some good reasoned advice here at Kiwiblog (thanks to those who have) I will be abandoning my traditional labour vote, I have made up my mind re my two ticks.

Also seeing as it is a shitty day here (and everywhere by the sound of it), I have put down the pen and am of a mind to muse a little…so I shall begin by musing that I really like being my own boss, so I can muse if I want to.

I also like employing people, I genuinely like our team, great people.

I am a little worried by the state of the financial markets, we are dependant on the export dollar.

I might leave work early and go home..read a book maybe..or I might stay and finish a project…mmmm

God I like working for myself

There is another hilarious side effect to the drop in car usage miles and the use of more efficient cars. Public Transport subsidies are actually funding-dependent on petrol tax revenues in many jurisdictions; these jurisdictions are looking at serious funding shortfalls. And the extra public transport use, as you point out, is negligible; not that extra public transport users will result in cost SAVINGS for the jurisdiction, it is more likely that public transport subsidies will need to INCREASE if more people used it.

This is hilarious, Orwellian stuff. The very behaviour that the “establishment” tells us they WANT, would drive them broke if their wishes came true.

FWTW my current strategy is to buy up the quality stocks in parcels and dont worry about when they bottom out That way you will be averaging down and maxmise on the up turn

Ive caught out before trying to pick the bottom and missed out

There are some cracker bargains to be had cant believe the thinking. Nows the time to turn that dropping interest cash into some nice juicy long term gains. Way to go!!!!!!

gd, thanks, I guess the time is right, but I readily profess to being a sharemarket virgin really, and very conservative in our money management. It is hard not to have a go though given the panic out there.

musthafabuck: I reckon the market has got a way to go down yet. Not for any reason to do with fundamentals, but quite a bit to do with herd instinct. I also reckon it will stay down for a while – I don’t see a really fast rebound. Talking DJIA, I’d guess we’ll bottom around 9,000, maybe 8,000, and stay below 10,000 for 6 months.

Of course, that isn’t stopping me continuing to buy shares. Haven’t sold any, still buying every month. The exchange rate fluctuation has ironed out a surprising amount of the drop, and on top of that the companies I buy aren’t as impacted as the average. They also don’t go up as fast either…..

Probably if I followed my own advice I would have gone to cash about 6 months ago, and I’d be starting to buy again about now, as gd says, dollar cost average on the way down and some of the way back up. I’d also be getting out of property now if I wasn’t so lazy (and living in it), but I don’t really think Aus and NZ will go down all that much – I’d pick more of an extended plateau. I wasn’t seeing any of those investments as something I was cashing in in the next 20 years anyway – they’re paying for my retirement (god knows the govt won’t be by then).

But as the old saying goes, it’s time in the market not timing the market that counts. That also conveniently aligns with my lazy genes, so I’m all in favour of believing it.

Charcoal all the way. I used to have charcoal, now I have a LPG BB. I miss charcoal.

Actually the charcoal was quicker – I could cook on it within 5 minutes…. admittedly with the assistance of some meths and a hair-dryer to get things blasting.

You can’t beat the taste of charcoal, and you can have the speed too… and actually I think charcoal can get hotter than most gas barbies can.

hospital waiting lists.

Just reading about how David Cunliffe in Feb undertook to slash waiting lists to 6 months max. So no-one would wait longer than 6 months for an op.

My mum needed a hernia op. They said since they couldn’t guarantee they could operate within 6 months, they wouldn’t put her on the list at all.

That’s how they are doing it – just don’t put people on the list. So instead of waiting say 7 or 8 or 9 months for an op, you don’t wait, but you don’t get the op… ever. But at least that mofo Cunliffe can stand up and say the list is down to 6 months eh?

I’m tempted to get one of those hoflicky cyclindrical charcoal ignition jobbies that express the coals to coooking temp.

Must say I have been disappointed by gas bbq’s in general esp. with LPG, it just aint hot enough. Now propane, theres another story.
