I made the following comments over at the Standard when they published it:

“How to win friends and influence new Ministers, by Helen Kelly”.

It’s good to see the CTU nail their colours to the mast. Pity they won’t engage in serious debate.

It’s a bit short on facts, though. National have said they won’t sell state assets. If that promise isn’t credible, then nor is Labour’s claim that they won’t cancel their tax cuts.

The video was obviously produced before the PREFU, because National’s fiscal package shows less debt forecast than Labour’s. If National is borrowing for its tax cuts, then so too is Labour.

The Huntly power station in the background wasn’t sold by National. It is still very much owned by Mighty River Power.

Three quarters of the power generation is state-owned. They’re making big profits, but it’s the Government that’s been creaming those profits off power users.

Roger Douglas didn’t sell Telecom. The 4th Labour Government did. Roger Douglas was Minister of Police during the sale. He hadn’t been Minister of Finance for a year prior to the Telecom sale. Helen Clark, however, had been Deputy Prime Minister for a year prior to the Telecom sale. She voted for the sale in Cabinet and in caucus.

It’s a pity the CTU couldn’t resort to fact with their scaremongering.

and isn’t Brenda ‘Kamikaze’ Pilott winning friends with her outrageous PSA claims – all of which have been rebuffed by Bill English. Thank fuck I don’t have to belong to a union.

When I did, the highlight was hitting a union rep with a barbeque implement. There’s nothing like being told to go on strike by someone who isn’t going to lose their pay and benefits who sits on their fat arse winding up your boss while you and all your workmates can see the simple solution to the issue. The fecker was lucky we didn’t hang him from the crane.

Anyway, I have seen the video, and posted it on g.blog. I think the messaging is spot on, but the NZCTU could do better re presentation of the message. The CTU’s effort reminds me of Muldoon’s 1975 Colenso ads – it is now 30 years on from that – and the Nats’ awful Telethon parody from 2005. I can’t believe that the Nats actually ran with something so awful – it totally negatedall the great PR work John Ansell had done with their billboards, and made them look amateurish.

The message, Toad, you mean “It’s alright to flat out lie about our opponents because they’re really evil capitalist bastards led by a rich prick”. That the sort of thing ? Because it may be reasonably well produced, but it sure as hell is full of untruths and highly misleading. It’s like me running a taxpayer funded ad claiming that the CTU is intent on enslaving you while the Union Bosses get their special Dacha’s and their preferential hospital treatment, but doing it really well !

I can see why the Bretheren so irked the Greens and Labour, because they told the basic truth about the policies espoused by the Greens and Labour.

Bloody hell, things not looking good for National in the polling tonight. The labour bloc gets more seats than the national bloc.

NZ are socialist greens. The people who comment here are the minority I am afraid. I wonder how much this has to do with the high birth rates in South Auckland and the exodus of the brightest…

The add is quite funny. Like Tim points out very early in the thread the CTU are not to bothered by the facts which is to be expected, hell unions think that getting CPI increases for workers while the PM gets circa 3 x CPI every year is doing a great job for workers.

Nats 49 – 55%

In other words…….a good old fashioned arse kicking for the Left….but as I said – we shall see.

I almost hope Labour get back in and cobble together a coalition of the minors. Considering that, according to Cullen, we’ve had surplus’s of $52 billion in the last 9 years and now there’s none left (and we’re going to have to borrow another $30 billion in the next 4 years), I really want to see what these idiots do when times are tough and they can’t squeeze any more tax out of people earning over 60k. It will be sad, but it may just be the lesson NZ needs to make sure that the ‘Left’ and friends can’t get their hands on our money for a very, very long time.

I had a look at the CTU advert. The accuracy is poor. They clearly need a history lesson.

They claim the Huntly power station amongst most of NZs electricity generation was sold. When in fact most of it is still owned by the government.

They ignore the fact that David Caygill sold Telecom. Cullen was the Associate minister of finance.

They have no recollection as to what a joke the NZ railways and for that matter most government departments were when they were heavily run by union labour. They all bled cash and stripped assests off all NZers. By 1984 the government could not borrow any more. It was Rogernomics or the IMF. After Douglas stepped down in 1989 none of his policies have been reversed. So what does that tell us!

I could go back further and talk about disturbing footage of starving sheep being shot because union workers refused to process them in the meatworks, or tonnes of raw milk being discharged into the environment after striking dairy factory workers let it go off!

The big unknown is the seat electorate – Maori getting seven, Labour loosing Auckland Central and Mt Roskil, will Jim win Wigram, who os going to win Rimutaka?

At what point will Labour turn on the Greens?

Clark and Co must know that a Labour/Green/Progressive/Maori government is (a) unlikely to last three weeks, let along long enough to write a budget and (b) be far to radical for most Labour supporters.

It is clearly in Labour interests to get NZF and United’s vote up and the Green’s down. How will they do that?

Ahhhh – you can always trust the New Zealand First/Labour Axis to pledge its way out of trouble.

You can trust the NZF/Labour axis to have the business nous to run the country becaquse they got a whole heap of union organizers to fall back on.
In fact the fact remains that they have probably very effectively ruined many businesses just like they have run the country dry in such affluent conditions.

A vote for Winston = a vote for Labour = a vote for corruption.

But your right- just picture the scene all suits and ties are banned and every labour party MP has to comply with the following codes of conduct.
Every member of the Labour/Green Axis must,
1) Hug one tree per day.
2) Hug every member of the same sex when first met during the day.
3) Hug every naughty kid seen during the day at school or at home
4) change their shower hose so no more than 4 litres per minute comes out of their own shower.
5) Change the water cylinder so it nevers heats up more than enough to have one shower per hour
6)Eat healthy snacks etc.
7)Put in solar water heating.

A vote for the Greens is a vote for Labour!!

It is funny but CTU haven’t let the truth get in the way of good propaganda. That’s probably the point though, people will still believe lies and if it’s wrong enough people will complain, getting them more publicity. If only I diddn’t need my unions indemnity insurance I wouldn’t have helped pay for it, what a waste of union members fees!

The Greens: Denise “I don’t want to be elected, just getting party vote up” Roche
Labour: Judith “Minister of cars, don’t know nuffing about cars” Tizard
National: Nikki “social liberal” Kaye
ACT: Scott “number 60 on the list” Uren.

Fierce? It’s merely a race to see how fast Tizard can be thrown out for Kaye. This is Auckland Central and these are the candidates the parties are running? ACT should have a major player in this part of the game!

I love it how the Axis supporters always look to the past. They squeal – ”National in the 90’s’, ‘Douglas in the 80’s’, ‘last time the polls said’. whereas those on the Right seem to look more to the future. We seek improvement. The Axis works on fear. As NZTed says above – That’s all they’ve got.

NO, Ratbiter, THAT is what John Key and every other clever, wealthy NZ-er will be doing after NZ’s next socialist government, either straight after this election, or soon after a future one, has completely finished off the NZ economy and gone broke, with not enough tax revenue to pay the civil servants or the beneficiaries or the cops or to keep the power on; and unable to find any international lenders who will touch them with a barge-pole; and the IMF have sent the receivers in.
