TV Poll Results

I understand both networks have poll results tonight so I have scheduled this post to appear at six pm so people can discuss them.

I absolutely agree with you John Ansell.

A strong ACT party in parliament is the only way we are going to turn around the New Zealand economy. Less than six months now until ACT makes that become a reality.

Don Brash mentioned some sensible ideas from the interview that appeared in the Sunday Star Times. Of particular interest was the idea of removing the high end tax of 39c and reducing the next tier from 33c to 30c.

The only hiding happening come November will be the one Labour receives at the polls.

I just hope that after November 2008 that no more roses have to die.

Always good to have a professional Politico on a forum…if you’re still here John, I recall from past ACT manifestos that their environment policy pledges usually included the words ‘polluter pays’, which are now all gone! Did they vanish into “Reform the Resource Management Act??

Good on you for accepting the invitation. Let’s know how many of ACT’s 20 points you agree with – and don’t forget to tote up how much closer to the Aussie weekly wage the sum total of the ones you like gets us.

Stephen Franks? A good guy and very principled.

I know he came a close second in a leadership contest a few years back. That wouldn’t be pleasant for anyone.

I suspect that, like Don Brash, he thinks he can achieve more in a big party that’s likely to lead the government than he can in a small one where he may or may not have been ranked highly enough to be elected.

Good luck to him – it would be great to see him triumph against the odds, but it would be against the odds. I just can’t see him being happy in a party where you have to lock your principles in a box.

He must have had to swallow particularly hard when John Key said he’d be buggered if he’d have Sir Roger Douglas in his cabinet.

I don’t know the answer to your ‘polluters pay’ question. Will have to check.

I do know that there are two kinds of people who come to the surface when you design a 20 point pledge card:

1. Those who say there are far too many words for anybody to bother reading any of it.

2. Those who, having read every word, want to know where you’ve hidden the detail.

Talking of there being two sides to everything, many women – and some men who claim to speak for women – say that the card, with words like ‘guts’ in it, is too macho to be palatable to women.

And just as many women, if not more, say that to think words like ‘guts’ are anti-women is itself anti-women.

(I’m with them.)

You can’t please some of the people any of the time, but hopefully we can please 10 percent of people in October. One thing’s for sure: we’re not going to die wondering whether we’ve made our position clear.

All 20 international best-practice policies will be fleshed out over the coming months, and come election day we’ll know whether Kiwis want to copy the richer countries and adopt those policies or continue the ClarKey route to perpetual underperformance.

As for National, we look forward to their detailed and costed policies, so voters can compare side by side how many dollars a week their ‘ambitious’ policies will be worth to New Zealand workers as compared to ACT’s ‘hard right’ ones, and how soon we can look forward to them bringing our children home.

Cheers, I look forward to finding out (perhaps on the website), it was one thing in my days of political illiteracy that I took comfort in in the event that ACT ever did well in an election, and I’m sure you know the environmental matters generally are quite important for some people. Seems strange there isn’t much there.
