Gary Gygax dies

If you don’t know who Gary Gygax was, you obviously were not a nerd at high school!

He has died aged 69.

Gygax – he would assuredly have been a magic user of some kind – he had great intelligence and charisma, but little wisdom. I was shocked when I read in the Wiki that he lost the ownership of D&D. RIP.

Weirdly enough I actually AVOIDED having my head stuck down a toilet at high school because I played D&D! A 7th former I had gamed with stepped in and saved me while the rest of my 3rd form friends were being dunked by a gaggle of prefects.

Admittedly the only kid in my year who did get bogwashed did also play D&D. But he was also a very small boy, and I think it was some kind of protection racket – he opted in to the bogwashing as an initiation to his protector’s gang.

He also was the first self-made millionaire in my year (computer games), so I guess he got the last laugh.

That would be more impressive if it weren’t for the fact that the Empire of the Petal Throne was originally published by TSR, Gygax’s old corp. But I am getting seriously unnerved by all the newspaper reports of his death. He’s getting more attention than George Macdonald Fraser for crying out loud!

The point – that I was attempting to distance myself from – was that there was a time before D&D was that popular. Rather like Beta video EPT was the one that was in contention then died off.

But I no nothing of such things and have only second hand information,

Yeah yeah on the D&D thing. And Gamma World, RuneQuest, and that space opera one, whose name escapes me right now, that took like 4 days to generate your character and 5 minutes to die. Got sick of that real fast. Still I didn’t become a high school mass murderer, so I could almost be termed a casual player. Except I was DM. Love those Monty Haul campaigns where the treasure always turned out to be cursed… bwa hah ha. And the talking sword that really pissed off the thieves by screaming battle cries and sundry challenges to enemies (always in a French accent) at the worst possible time.

Oh, I meant to say “I knew this guy that …”

Traveller. The character generation was actually worse than you remember for the character could actually get killed during generation and you had to start a new one. As for allegations of a mispent youth, the best defence is to declare that at least you weren’t playing F.A.T.A.L. (google for the review – it’s unbelievably awful).
