Vector to lay 300 kms of fibre in Auckland
Very pleased to see Vector announce plans for 300 kms of high speed fibre to be laid in Auckland.
What their strategy appears to be is not to compete at the retail level, but to offer ISPs a regional backhaul service to compete with Telecom, and faster than Telecom’s.
If I have interpreted their intentions correctly, that is a good thing as backhaul has little competition at the moment and is the major speed limitation at present. Of course backhaul includes national and international but everything has to start somewhere.
There is no doubt NZ’s future is to have fibre to almost every premise. It is where the OECD is going. The question for us is whether we want to be last or one of the leaders.
