I’m with Jim
Not often I agree with Jim Anderton, but he speaks sense on the issue of the call by the Greens for a public holiday for Hillary:
Wigram MP Jim Anderton, the third-ranked minister in Clark’s Government, said he felt a public holiday would not honour Hillary’s memory and would set a bad precedent.
“I don’t think that that is appropriate. I don’t think he would want that. He showed no evidence in all his life that he would want to immortalise himself,” said the Progressive Party leader.
“He wanted to see his work continued. That was his strongest view and I saw that over and over. I don’t think we would be doing him any great service if we tried to somehow immortalise him.
“We have great New Zealanders. There have been a number of them and if we set a precedent that we are going to give holidays, where would you stop it?”
The idea of (re)naming a mountain still appeals to me.
