I think the cartoon that appeared in the Herald the other day (which strangely I can’t seem to find online) was very good, with Helen as a junkie tightening the rubber around her arm with her teeth and injecting a ‘POWER’ syringe into her arm and a bystander saying, something like, ‘be careful, look what happened to John Howard’.

Thanks bwakile, I’ve got heaps to smile about. Today makes me curious though – what are the laws regarding the use of cartoons such as this? I see them re-hosted on blogs all the time. Is that fair use in terms of copyright or how does it work?

off course chris hocquard, music lawyer and greame downes, musicologist both sit on the centre left to left in the political spectrum so their opinions should be taken with grain of salt.

but really its not a good look to be seen using plagarised music, it is of course nothing to do with key, but rather the project managers and advisors, whom have cocked up.

perhaps next time they could use a local muscian to creative new zealand music, though finding a neoliberal muscian that can write creatively is itself a paradox in itself.

Really? With all due respect to Doctor Downes, I’ve long through his band – The Verlaines – and many other exponents of the so-called ‘Dunedin Sound’ owe twenty five years of back royalties to The Velvet Underground for the wholesale plundering of their musical language. I’m sure others, including Downes himself, would vigorously disagree but that’s what I hear.

All art is based on plagiarism. The Impressionists all plagiarised Monet, the Cubists, Picasso, the Dadaists, Dali. Everyone plagiarised the Beatles, and once Jimi Hendrix plugged his guitar into the feedback, then everyone after him owed royalties (yeah right).

I think anyone who tries to make a case against this is on slim bikkies. ‘Clocks’ is a song, but there is no singing, no hint of the melody. It is only an introductory piece with some chords and rhythm. If you could copyright the 12 bar blues riff then you’be a multi-trillionaire by now. The question is: can you copyright a sound? I’ll leave that for the lawyers, thanks.

This has certainly distracted Moreau’s kids away from their homework!!

a sound is different to a song, disputes happen not because a band sounds like another band (coldplay vs snow patrol, joy division vs interpol, etc), its usually over sound. (or more recently sampling, think verves bittersweet symphony and the rolling stones)

songs are usually a product of the writers, a sound is (simplistically put) a product of the way the music is played by the band.

anyway, the dispute is over a song not a sound.

Certainly not a good look for National. The similarities go far beyond a copying of style – and Craig. I play covers of both the verlains and the velvet underground, and am familiar with all of their released work. Suffice to say they’re stylistically similar, but there’s no exact copying of harmony and chord progression as there is with National’s version of “clocks”. Have these heathens no respect for property rights at all?

There are thousands of recovering alcoholics in NZ – my partner being one of them. And yes, she’s understandably sensitive about it – however, if some stranger on a blog made an off the cuff remark about her seeming a bit jaded from a possible boozy night out she wouldn’t cynically use it against them in a point scoring exercise – obviously it wasn’t intended to be a personal jibe against Craig’s alcoholism.

POC – no I was refering to sicoff’s flip comment. My point was that he didn’t appear to know craig personally, so how could he have known about Craig’s alcaholism? IMHO it looks like Craig just jumped off the deep end without any good reason.

BTW, Roger Nome, I’m not open about my alcoholism and manic depression to ‘play the victim card’. I do so because it’s just part of my life – and perhaps openness might convince a few more people to think before using something that has caused a lot of pain to me and my loved ones as a cheap put down. Perhaps I’m on a hiding to nothing with the wingnuts around here, but I don’t see why I should have to own other people’s idiocy.
