Better late than never

While the timing is unfortunate, nevertheless the Government has done the right thing in formally taking Australia to the World Trade Organisation over their 86-year blocking of our apple exports.

No-one could claim we have rushed into it!

The Australian Government will fight it of course, because they have to keep the locals back home happy.  But they will almost certainly lose, but then the WTO gets blamed instead of the Government.  This is the good thing about a rules based system – you have to follow them.

It will take a while though.  I’d pick around 2015 for the first NZ apple to make it to Australia.
