Attacking success

The vast majority of New Zealanders think that people who do well, especially from humble beginnings, should be admired.  But Labour see John Key’s successful career in business (which of course can not match a career in lecturing in political science) as a bad thing.

The Herald reports how Labour has a deliberate strategy to attack Key’s wealth. Raymond Miller is quoted as saying he thinks the strategy is dangerous for Labour.  It is of course the politics of envy.  The best quote goes to Key himself:

“What we know is they don’t like people who are poor that become wealthy, and they don’t like people who are wealthy and stay wealthy – so the only conclusion can be that they want people who are wealthy to become poor and people who are poor to stay poor.”
