No hungry kids in my electorate
I am sure everyone remembers Phil Goff announcing that there were no hungry children in his electorate, in response to John Key announcing a scheme to supply food to a school in his electorate.
Well Red Cross has now launched a scheme to supply free breakfasts to kids at all 270 decile one schools around the country. Good on them, Countdown and Woolworths for the initiative.
The question has to be will Phil Goff angrily denounce this scheme and insist schools in his electorate be left out of it?
Oh and an evaluation of the pilot scheme found children involved were “better behaved, more alert and settled”, which was the whole point behind it. It’s not about welfare (free food) as much as minimising risks that kids will flunk out of school because they are inattentive and disruptive due to hunger.
