NCEA Moderation
The HoS has an article on NCEA which upon close reading makes me realise the variability in standards is far far worse than previously discovered.
People may recall that in 2005 a small proportion of papers, 3.2%, were checked and a massive 29% were marked incorrectly. Now we firstly discover a further 10% were invalid as the tasks set by schools were inappropriate so we’re up to 40% have a result they should not have.
But it seems that schools know which schools and even which subjects will be checked six months before the checking. So this 40% inaccuracy rate is arguably as good as it gets, as teachers know this are is being checked, In other areas it could be much much worse. How can any parent, employer or student have faith in such results?
