Fijian blogs under threat

NRT has the news that the excellent Fijian blog Ms Vakaivosavosa has closed down due to fear of arrest (or worse) by the military government. They are actively seeking he authors of the blog Intelligentsiya.

I think Fiji is a great example of how blogs can be a beacon of free speech. The dictator and his thugs can suppress other criticism and censor newspapers, and arrest journalists. But blogs can and do allow the truth to come out.

Talking of Fiji there has been a minor schism (very minor – one person) in the Libertarianz over the Fijian situation.

One member, Tim Wikiriwhi, has left as he supports Bainimarama on the grounds the Commodore claims he will get rid of racist seats. Now I think race based seats are a bad idea also. But a libertarian of all people should know one can’t justify noble ends with means which involve coups, killing people, censoring the media, and appointing yourself boss. Every tyrant in history has claimed noble ends or intentions.
